It also didn't come anywhere near the highs of TNG (if you think any part of Voyager was better than s3-5 of TNG I don't know what to say) and it just had a ton of really frustrating really weird things in regards to stuff like characters, some of the performances, scripting, etc.

Also just sorry of inevitably suffers thru comparison to DS9 which is almost effortlessly better, sorry not sorry

Voyager had the best single episode of the two (The Year of Hell three-parter)...but also the worst (Threshold)...

But, on the whole, I agree with you, seasons 3-5 of TNG were consistently better than Voyager (which was pretty consistently 'average' through the run, aside from outliers like YoH and Threshold). (1-2 and 6-7, on the other hand, were all over the place, and All Good Things is up there with Threshold and the Enterprise finale as the worst episodes of the franchise, though.)

I love Threshold

I liked Voyager. I haven't seen every episode but I caught a lot of them when they were airing. I thought it was fun. I grew up on TNG and caught some of DS9 (but I found that harder to just drop into when they were doing the longer season-arcs). I think they all have their good points and clunkers. I like watching any of them when they happen to be on.

Even bad Star Trek is fun and I've never seen anything in Voyager that was explicitly bad. I'm excited for the new movie and can't even describe my anticipation for the new show. I don't even care if it will suck. I just know that it will make new Trekkies!

Personally I loved TNG the best but I did enjoy Voyager and do find some of the hate a bit over the top(I feel the same about Enterprise too), it's not perfect but it's fun and frankly all the Star Trek shows have their oddball moments.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. To be honest, my least favorite series is the original series (and I grew up with that because I'm old). But I still appreciate what it set out to accomplish (especially considering the limits they faced and the type of programming they were up against). Plus, when I was a kid, TOS really spurred my imagination and Charlie X really fucked with my mind. I had nightmares about that episode for YEARS.

I love Voyager. The more absurd episodes are some of my favorites. I love all the weird shit in Star Trek and Voyager has always seemed rather cracky. I think they just stopped trying after the first few episodes and wrote whatever they wanted.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-27 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The Only episode of Voyager I dislike is Fury. WTF, Kes? It's right up there with Enterprise's stupid finale for Shittiest Plot Ever.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Voyager characters are shit. Chakotay is an all-native-tribes-spiritual-people stereotype, Janeaway is a mess and Seven is blatantly sexualized. No LGBT themes either.
TNG had better characters despite all its faults.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I agree about Seven being blatantly sexualized and Chakotay "the spiritual Indian" but I don't think LGBT themes had any affect on most people. TBH most Treks don't have a lot of that unless it's subtext.

Lgbt is missing from every trek property isn't it? I've seen clips of the TNG ep where Riker hooks up with a species that forbids gender, but that's hardly a theme.

I usually keep my expectations low, but I think if the new trek series doesn't have any explicitly queer content I will lose my shit.

lolwut no lgbt themes? there were quite a few episodes with the typical coded equivalent thing going on and also the whole Janeway/Seven/Borg Queen subtext that was screaming in your face.

I never warmed to the characters in TNG enough to keep watching after S2, whereas from the beginning I liked Tuvok, Kes, and B'lanna.

(Voyager never came close to DS9 for me, but I do like it better than TNG).

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
I feel something like this. TNG was the one I grew up with, but I honestly never really felt that strongly about the characters. Q was my favourite, and maybe Data. It's not even that I felt they were bad, I admired a lot of them, I was just never overly invested in any of them. While Voyager isn't my favourite Trek either (DS9 and TOS are tied in first place), I remember the characters much more vividly. Maybe it's just my memory, but while they were wildly uneven a lot of the time, the VOY crew also seemed more distinct.

Female captain, tbh.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
To expand on that--She couldn't win if she was too take-charge and strong, even though she was the captain, and she couldn't win if she asked for lots of advice and considered what other people thought because that was "weak." It felt to me like the character couldn't win in many people's minds no matter what she did. Add in a sometimes poor writing and it gave lots of excuses for people to hate her. TBH I loved her anyway, despite the flaws.

I like Voyager, but I can't agree that it was better than TNG. I don't think it was any more or less consistent than any of the other shows, but I find TNG more intriguing and I love the characters, especially as group, way better.

Although, I'm biased a bit because 7 of 9 is my most hate Trek character and one of my most hated fictional characters ever so that really killed a lot of my enjoyment of the show and throws off the group dynamics completely for me, which I need for Trek. The group dynamic is one of the reasons that DS9 is my second least favorite show (thus far).

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I know what you mean about 7 of 9. Just...why, Star Trek? Do you have to pander so obviously??

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 02:01 am (UTC)(link)
Part of the issue, I think, was that by the time they were doing a third series, they shouldn't have taken so long to find their footing. I mean The Next Generation was a new thing and they had to find a way to make an updated Trek work and it had some growing pains. Now, I really like Voyager, but they were all over the place for quite a while. It felt like they didn't quite know what to do with a female captain (which, honestly, was a little annoying because it may have been a new thing for Star Trek, but, you know, there were examples of women in high-ranking positions in other places, including Lucie Salhany, CEO of UPN, which Voyager was the first telecast of).

Voyager is my fave series behind DS9 and has most of my favorite episodes and characters.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Yo, FUCK everybody. Voyager was dope and the hate it got (and continues to get) ridiculous

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 09:16 am (UTC)(link)
Is it possible that one reason I don't really hate Voyager that much is that I started really watching it later, and missed the Kazon?

Voyager better than TNG?! Blasphemy!
