I like Judge Judy but that doesn't surprise me.
Most baby boomers/middle aged people nowadays don't understand the struggles of the new generation. And instead of adjusting their worldview to the modern age, they ussually just refuse to change their mindset and instead accuse said younger generation of being lazy despite the overwhelming evidence that it's not that simple or true.
:/

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Not all baby boomers are that way. Keep in mind that Judge Judy spends all day every day dealing with people who are gaming the system.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
You realize that "not all" is explicitly indicated by ayrt saying "most", yeah?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 01:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Except it is clearly meant to stigmatise an entire generation, so don't dodge.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Hey now, don't paint us all with that brush. I admire the younger generation and think they (you) have gotten stuck with a really shitty deal. When I was young, university was much more affordable and while a few of us had small student debts, I didn't know anyone who started out their working life with a debt that would take many years to pay off.

Not directly related, but I cringe every time I go into a coffee house in my city and the sound system is playing boomer music. Don't get me wrong, I love a lot of my generation's music (Simon and Garfunkel 4eva etc.) but I dislike how shamelessly my generation is being catered to. Equal time for contemporary music, damn it.

I remember my parents telling me stories about going to their high school reunions, and how sad it was when the subject of music would come up and my parents started talking about all these artists they liked, and their classmates didn't know about any of them, because they didn't seem aware of or care about any music that came out after, like, sometime in the 1980s, at most (my parents graduated in 1975).

Sure, my parents will always love the stuff they grew up with, of course, like anyone would with music from their generation...but they were still aware of and liked music that came out after their time, they didn't close themselves off to anything new just 'cause it wasn't from their generation.

Plus, between my sister and me, they couldn't have avoided any newer music even if they tried or wanted to, so...:p.

Oh man, anon, me and my parents went to the same college, thirty years apart, and for some unfathomable reason, my father kept his tuition receipts.

I saw. I cried. This was a public college, with in-state tuition, I had gotten a scholarship, I blazed through my education in two years instead of four, and I STILL paid way more than double what he did. And I got off EASY, I know folks with a hundred grand in debt!

Seriously, how the hell did tuition cost so little back in y'all's day? HOW???

As I understand it, there used to be generous public subsidies, which Ronald Reagan spent his entire political career working to destroy. When USA right-wingers talk about "big government," this is it, right there. They don't want to pay for post-secondary education.

Gee, thanks Reagan.

You forget that most middleaged people have children in "the new generation". Also we are a bit sick of being stereotyped as a) uncaring [I give my kids lots of help and advantages my parents didn't or couldn't give me, to help them along] b) personally responsible for the problems faced, so it would be nice if you and those like you could quit doing that.

Or is it only alright to stereotype and condemn and make sweeping generalisations if it's your generation doing it?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
*laughs at the idea of being able to choose between a loan or a job*

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah. Most people I know that have taken out loans are also working

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 12:21 am (UTC)(link)
I actually wish I'd gotten a job. My parents wouldn't allow me to because they thought it would hurt my grades. Thankfully I got some need-based aid and a bit of GPA-based aid, but I still took out the max allowed for both undergrad and graduate school and now have almost 200k in student loan dept.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
200K?? I hope you became a doctor or lawyer.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
How could your parents prevent you from getting a job in college? It's not like they need to sign a permission slip.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 07:55 am (UTC)(link)
No, but if they're co-signing on those loans, they have some kind of veto power over what you do, either relationship-wise or actual. Keep in mind that you can't even get loans based on your own income until you're married or 26. Hitting 18 isn't always immediate full independence, for a lot of reasons.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Er. no. My parents contributed to my university education and I didn't even think about asking them if I could/should work as well. I just did.

Well, yeah, she's a conservative. I can forgive her for it because she's Judy.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I watched an episode last year and found some of her views to be outdated and problematic, but she's gotten used to thinking she's right about everything so she won't listen to new perspectives. A lot of people in law, particularly cops, think they know better than everyone else (at least in my personal experience working near them on a daily basis).

"students who take loans rather than work"

wat lol. She can't possibly think that working at Starbucks through college is enough to pay for tuition/expenses.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:06 am (UTC)(link)
I enjoy watching her yell at people but yes, she is a very cranky old lady with cranky old lady views

she's also one of those dummies who believe pitbulls have "locking jaws"

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I love her and sometimes I can see her point and even cheer her on, but sometimes I cringe at how unwarrantedly judgmental she can be sometimes. She does seem to have real issues, particularly, with older people who choose to go back to school instead of working. I get that in theory adults should be in a position to take care of themselves without handouts, but that's not always how the real world works particularly these days.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
>unwarrantedly judgmental

This is reality TV. Her judgmentalness is not remotely unwarranted. Stirring up controversy always makes for better TV.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 04:47 pm (UTC)(link)
she hates people who don't have kids so she can fuck off.
