Just another example of Jar-Jar Abrams not knowing how to direct drama. Don't get me wrong, he can do action scenes, he can create amazing SFX, he can do cool ideas, but he just cannot do emotion beyond adrenaline rushes. He is a good film technician, just not a director. He got his director gigs because of connections.

I never really thought it that way, but I agree with you. He's quite good at a lot of stuff, but his big emotional scenes (or scenes that should be emotional) tend to feel a bit hollow

All the people who cried at the beginning of Star Trek but wouldn't admit to it now would have disagreed with you seven years ago.

Still haven't seen this. Don't think I'm ready for Han's death.

That said, this dialogue sounds kinda lame.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I thought he was actually playing Han when he went on about being conflicted. (Like you, OP, I went in spoiled.) "I think I can do it" = "I think I can kill you," not "I think I can turn to good" as Han had hoped.

Hmmm. I never considered that. I don't think I see it that way, but it is a really interesting take.

I think he was conflicted, but what he wanted to do was kill Han because it would mean he's “strong enough" to overcome his doubts and the light and embrace the dark side. (So I sort of agree about Kylo's words.)

And maybe that's why I like that scene. The dialogue wasn't Shakespeare, but I thought it worked and the actors hit it out of the park.

I pretty much always thought this and to me it's like...his struggle is real and his moment of grief for what he's about to do is real but even those emotions he is using to deceive Han because he wants to overcome them.

Yeah, he knows is trying to impress Snoke with how tough and supposedly badass he is in order to get into the cool kids' gang, but really he just wants to go "daddy I wuv you and want a hug" and is about to burst into tears over that until the lights go out and he manages to shiv Han in the dark. Because he is too much of a massive limp penis to shiv someone with the lights on.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought that was a possible interpretation too, but I wasn't sure if I felt that way because:

1) I was meant to and the ambiguity was purposeful
2) the guy playing Kylo Ren didn't have the acting chops to pull off the "I feel so conflicted" moment
3) shitty writing

So really, I'm still not sure.

+1 I thought it was really obvious that this is what was happening. I think that took a lot of suspense out of the scene because it was just a matter of at what moment would he kill Han not if he would kill him.

I loved this scene. I thought the dialogue was perfect. It really hit me in the gut, and I don't even like Han that much.

I'll join you on the hackneyed dialogue, but I thought Harrison Ford sold the hell out of that moment. And I haven't been impressed by him since the 90s.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:08 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah i thought the dialogue was pretty cheesey.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
It was cheesier than OT Star Wars, but more natural sounding than Prequel Trilogy Star Wars. JJ is Mid-Scale George Lucas on the tin ear spectrum.

I thought it was an okay scene. I agree it didn't really "hit" me, but the drama was about on par for any other "dramatic" Star Wars scene. Star Wars dialogue has never been Shakespeare.

Mostly though I don't like Harrison Ford in the role (old Han Solo, I mean). I agree he always looks grumpy, and he's so awkward and unlikable in most of his interviews and acts like the Star Wars fame has jaded him so much and he doesn't give a shit about the character or the series.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved seeing him in the movie, was so sad that he died, and it was massive nostalgia to have him back (however briefly, grr!), but I too have the feeling he's really freaking fed up with everything Star Wars. :(

Except his fellow actors. I think he still likes them... That's the only genuine warmth I see in him about the franchise anymore at all.

My gods. Everything. Everything you said here. Exactly.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 10:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Harrison Ford and his iconic roles but... I've never been that impressed with his acting abilities in moments like this. He does action well, has a decent sense of comedic timing and plays certain roles well (it's no coincidence that Han Solo and Indiana Jones are both likeable rogue types) but he really doesn't have a great range of facial expressions. The whole knitted-brow-slightly-open-mouth stunned buffalo look gets a lot of play. Too much, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
Ford is a bad actor tbh.

It's because Han Solo isn't dead.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-01 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed, it was terribly underwhelming.

Also I'm not sure if I just wasn't looking in the right places, but I didn't see that much devastation over his death on the internet either? Maybe I missed it.
