All the sex negativity in the past decade or so. What the fuck, I thought you guys were cool?

AMEN. Remember when fandom used to be where you went for hardcore kink and all those fantasies you couldn't discuss with ~normal~ people?

My guess it's the horseshoe effect, plus you're getting a bigger influx of fans who are much younger, so their view of sex in general is probably going to be much different from yours and everyone over, say, 25+.

Though I do say the sex negativity in fandoms like Steven Universe is pretty baffling, and I don't think anyone's ever come to a conclusive answer as to why that is.

Pretty sure most of it is petty ship war drama under the guise of social justice.

Eh, sorta. A lot of it was a grnuine fear it'd end up being MLPFiM 2.0.

And even with THAT fandom I'm baffled at the sex negativity towards the people who DO make sure things are tagged properly and the like.

I guess... but a decade ago, we had 13-years-olds reading and writing smut. It wasn't good smut, true, but they seemed to have a basic interest in and appreciation of sex.

Yeah, but even a decade ago the under 18s had to keep quiet about being under 18 or they got banned from the sites. We all knew they were there, but they had to at least be able to fake a certain level of maturity in order to stay there.

And now we're expected to read and write on their level, which basically amounts to all sex is gross unless everyone is enthusiastically consenting, and no one is a villain, and there's no age or power difference, and, and, and...

I can corroborate this statement as I *was* a young person reading and writing it.

Same. I started reading/writing it around age 14 because, unsurprisingly, that was when the hormones kicked in and I started becoming interested in sex in general.

like, what do you have in mind when you say "sex negativity"

See the Civil War thread below for a good example.

People used to believe in Your kink is not my kink and that's okay! and scroll right on by stories whose premises they found unappealing. Now they shame writers for creating works that they aren't personally into, usually under some ridiculous white knight type quest. 'There's a power imbalance between the vharacters. You shouldn't write kinky stuff about power imbalances. Or insert hobby horse of choice here.

Fandom is a duller place for it.

I think it depends on the fandom? There are a couple people in my fandom that are sex-negative to the point they think people should write less of it. But for the most part my fandom is really sex-positive. The fact that there are a lot of power dynamics already there in canon helps.

Re: Peeves about nerds, geeks, and our own ilk

GOD I KNOW. I remember when kink memes were still a thing and drenched in filth. Now it's all "fade to black" scenes and shit. Although it's nice that the concept of consent has gained attention, I feel that it's done in such a way to deter people with specific kinks (noncon, dubcon, powerplay, etc.) from contributing to fandom, without fear of being shouted down (or in this day and age, a call out post). There was a time where people understood that just because someone has a kink for something in fiction, does not necessarily mean that they act it out in real life. Now it's like if you have any predilections towards power discrepancies you're automatically the devil.

Ironically, geek culture was the place that introduced me to sex positivity and safe spaces to discuss kink. Now it's apparently fucked due to the latest influx of teens (one of the reasons I still refuse to get a tumblr).

Fuck this shit though, I still discuss porn and deviant kinks and cool stuff. To my mind, that's always what fandom will be for.
