I too am glad to have Amara in the show, for various reasons, I believe you listed most of them.

I'm also glad Dean's "romantic" interest is in fact the evil/"badness" they're always trying to get rid of, that she's a strong woman, and that she's not some young thing (even though I am). And this evil...well, it doesn't seem entirely evil, or it's a more subtle evil than we're used to seeing on the show.

Where do the consent issues lie for Dean? I can't remember, but did she bring him back? There was that whole scene early on in the season where the darkness surrounds him but...that is also something interesting to think about/handle in fic/meta.

Also, I have much love for Billie the Reaper. She has no sympathy for the Winchesters. I bet she's been waiting for that gig since the first (probably the second time) they evaded the permanent sleep of death.

She claims she has a bond with Dean. A Bond that Dean has stated many times he doesn't want, that he is afraid of. When he is in her vicinity, he is literally paralyzed and has to make an effort in order to fight her (Which of course translates in this season's "We don't need Dean in the mytharc"). So yeah, if you do ship them as a romantic couple, there's the huge fact that Dean wants nothing to do with her and the only kiss they have shared was when he was completely unable to react (so he was not consenting), and that's not even getting into the very creepy factor that he held the body she's inhabiting when said body was a baby. That the showrunners choose to shoot certain scenes when she was growing up in a very suggestive way that made use of the horrible "child seducer" trope.

Also, she destroys souls. When she consumes them, they cease to exist as individuals. No heaven, no afterlife, nothing. Just psycho shells who will dissapear when they die. THAT is pretty evil in my book. Not to mention that "evil chaotic destructive force is female" is pretty much the most mysoginistic trope I can think of. Seriously, it is as if they took a page from Cerberus.

(I am firmly convinced that the only reason why people like her is because of her ties to Dean. The writers are very well versed on using Dean to garner sympathy for their new characters)

That's an interesting way of looking at it; I didn't think of it like that. :)

As far as the creep factor goes, yeah, I see that (definitely, but they also did something similar in S4 Sam/Lilith--so not terribly surprised? What would be surprising is if they aged her up as the season continues), but I also thought that Dean's fear had to do with becoming what he hated, and more so because he would enjoy it (if I'm not mistaken, he's said this about times he's turned evil, circa S4? i could be wrong and be reading too much into it).

I suppose I don't see Amara as a misogynistic trope only because there have been so many evil characters, male or female, and if she is supposed to be God's foil, or mirror, then it makes sense that she is destructive, if God is supposed to be the creative life giving force (as opposed to her destruction and chaos). I like female villains. I'd say they were cold in the treatment of Bela--that I felt was messed up. And I have no qualms in saying they have issues with portraying women (the strong ones always end up dead, walk away, or have to act in a particular manner, which always irks me a bit, because it's limiting and of course they act that way, they're rough tough hunters, all decked out in flannel, etc .)

I think the difference between Dean / Amara in season 11 and Sam/Lilith in seasons 3/4 is that when Lilith was in the child vessel she acted like a child and she was never looking to seduce Sam. The only time she acted like a seductress was in her adult vessel, which was a completely different vessel.

Also, Dean's talk about enjoying "evil" was not really a good confession, as he was talking about the times when he was "enjoing" torturing souls in hell (and I put that in between quotes since it is pretty obvious that the enjoyment came not out of causing pain, but about not being the one hurt at the time) and is completely different from the fear of being unable to control his own body. He pretty much says that the problem with the Amara thing is that he is no longer in control of his own body and that terrifies him, it has nothing to do with "letting myself do things I would otherwise despite but deep down I like" but "holy fuck, I can't move my arms at all and she is using me as a puppet".

And well, I do get why you wouldn't see it as a mysoginistic trope but ... uhm.. you pretty much described why it is (Male = light and creation, Female = Darkness and destruction. I mean, why can't it be the other way around?)

Female villians are cool. Problem is, this show has a horrible track record with them (Lilith is basically a McGuffin for Lucifer's story. Bela... ugh. Ruby is the Whore to the Madonna/Whore duality with Jess and is there just to advance Sam's story as a Mesiah figure. Abaddon was underused. Rowena is a caricature. The closest to a cool female villian we had was Meg and she had to get a redemption arc and a love interest out of nowhere for her final episode. Which I GET was because the actress was retiring, but still... ugh)

I think is worth to point she didn't choose that bond, even though she accepted it fully.

For all we know, she also has similar troubles around Dean, but because she doesn't fight against that bond, she can act more freely while still having a weak spot when it comes to Dean.

The souls are alive inside Amara.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-09 02:45 am (UTC)(link)
That's not true. That's conjecture due to what she said to Dean and that makes her a very unreliable source.

Unless we see all the souls going to heaven once she's killed, those souls? are kaput which means they were destroyed and the owners were robbed of the afterlife.

[personal profile] kribban 2016-05-09 05:08 pm (UTC)(link)
They've been robbed of their afterlife, that's for sure.

There's no reason to believe Amara was lying. She truly believes the souls are happy inside her.

I think once she dies, the souls will be released.

I agree on all those points.

I don't like Amara. I usually don't care whatever the show wants to do with their bad guys/good guys. It is fiction, and I don't usually connect it to my real life beliefs at all. It seems like the idea of God having a sister is a line too far for me, though. Not really sure why. I don't begrudge anyone else liking her, but I can't seem to.

I like Amara. I like that God has a sister (God knows the church changed portions of the bible referencing the female apostle. a little blasphemy is well-deserved). I like that she's darkness instead of creation for once: I'm tired of women being typecast as creators and nurturers all the time.

The one thing I don't like is that Dean isn't able to control his own body around her, but I think there's a deeper purpose to that as foreshadowed by the most recent episode [SPOILER....

....] see, Sam said he's afraid Dean is going to choose Amara over him. But I think in the final cusp, under some critical scenario, Dean's love for his brother will make it possible for him to resist the bond magic and choose Sam, and thus possibly save the Universe. Wouldn't it be cool if for once, just once, their love for each other worked for them instead of making them mess everything up?
