If you're hanging around with people that think the bottom books are "ridiculous fantasy with no value"...why are you spending time with them?

Those authors both wrote valuable works that anyone could be proud of loving.

Way to blame them, asshole. Seriously, hanging around terrible people is one thing, (and even so, you can't attack people for doing what they can or judge their circumstances as if it's safe and easy for them to leave bad people)...but dropping people for disagreeing with you on what books you like is pathetic. Do you drop someone every time they think your fandom is stupid? If that's the case, that's really pathetic. It would only make sense if they really destroyed and harassed OP, but it just seems OP is making an observation about how the books are seen.

Also, they never even said who is saying them. For all you know it could be teachers or parents, and it's not like you can just get up and go away all because they hate your fav book. Lots of teachers in the U.S. think Harry Potter is terrible and worthless fiction. Does that mean it's okay for all the triggered HP fans to stop going to school forever? Think a bit before opening your mouth.

Asking "why are you doing X?" isn't assigning blame to anyone...overreactive!nonny, you really need to slow down and take the time to read the comments you respond to.

but dropping people for disagreeing with you on what books you like is pathetic. Do you drop someone every time they think your fandom is stupid

It's not about the things I like. It's in general. If you feel the need to tell other people that something they like is stupid...you aren't someone I want to hang around. If you feel that any book or media is worthless then...you aren't someone I want to hang around.

it's not like you can just get up and go away all because they hate your fav book. Lots of teachers in the U.S. think Harry Potter is terrible and worthless fiction

Having to be around someone isn't the same thing as having to pretend you dislike a certain thing.

Think a bit before opening your mouth.

Read a bit before opening yours.

Why not explain to people what they mean to you and try to break the preconceived notion people have of them 'having no real value'.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing OP is a guy and would get abuse for valuing "girl books" above "man books."

I'm so proud of you, Dropshadow Anon! You're improving! You'll be making secret masterpieces in no time!

(Also, hey, one of my most inspiring, life-affirming books I read as a kid was an early 80s uber-pulpy sci-fi/romance hybrid.)

I would be less impressed if you told me your favourite series was Asimov's Robot books from 1950s than Mercedes Lackey's girl power horse fantasy.

I haven't read Lackey since I was 19-20 (actually think I've read most every Valdemar series except this one) but I enjoyed the hell out of her when I was younger. There's a lot of fun stuff there! Meanwhile I love hard sci fi and I've always found Asimov really hard to get into. I've never even tried this series.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
The ones in the secret are more pulpy detective novels in a SF world than hard SF, so maybe that's why!

[personal profile] philippos42 2016-05-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
I like a good chunk of Asimov, & I don't like the Robot novels.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
Why what? I haven't read them.
Maybe I should though because pulpy detective stories are great. I found the concepts in the Asimov I've read kind of dated and the characters nonexistent. I can take a little of that for a cool concept, but "Foundation" was not that.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I dunno. Mercedes Lackey is one of the the biggest names in fantasy and has been for quite some time. Obviously her books aren't for everyone, but I agree, if you're hanging out in spaces that are that snobby, maybe it's time to find new friends.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 10:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Read closer. They didn't say friends.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
There is nothing wrong with loving what you love to read!!

(Anonymous) 2016-05-14 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Early Mercedes Lackey was great, though...

is it just me, or did she go downhill over the years? I feel like her books got less and less interesting as the years wore on. I found everything post-nineties to be unreadable. Granted, I gave up on her in the early naughties, so maybe she got past it.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I feel the same way. In fact, I only finished the Collegium Chronicles because I was hoping for references to her earlier books. (Which, sadly, turned out to be few and far in between.)

I was introduced to her stuff late, so I'm only familiar with her more recent works, and...yeah I love her ideas and worldbuilding, but she repeats herself so much. I literally skipped two entire chapters' worth of Joust because of the repetition and the story still made complete sense to me, which is kinda not what I'd think an author would want a reader to do? I'd like to read more of her stuff because who doesn't like dragons and griffins and magic, but the fact that I was able to (and had to, for the sake of my sanity) skip huge chunks of the story like that really turned me off. Was that a thing in her earlier works too?

That's even worse than Turtledove :O

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I feel bad saying anything negative about Lackey because that first trilogy of hers was SO GOOD, with such delightful worldbuilding and fun characters, but I felt she very quickly started to commit the error of giving her readers just what she thought they would want, tied with a bow, and that's such a bad path for an author. Everything's so predictable, endings are so nice and neat...it makes you wince, reading it. That started to creep into her books really fast.

But damn, I love that Arrows series. I reread it bunches.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah probably. I love a lot of earlier Lackey stuff but haven't read much of her new stuff, although there a few here and there that are fun. For me it was a combination of her stuff not being as good as well as just being too used to her writing style. Her voice as a writer started to grate on my nerves. That's happened for me with several authors I read who've released a lot of books.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I thought her Elemental Masters series was okay.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-15 02:07 am (UTC)(link)
I love Lackey there's no reason to be ashamed of what you like. Your favorites are your own. It would be boring if everyone's favorites were the same.

Aww OP, why not unapologetic own your love for them and be a good example to show others it is okay to have a ridiculous young fantasy series as your favourite!

Perhaps some of the people you're having these conversations with have similar fears about their real faves? Everyone will hopefully one day unapologetically admit their faves.

I liked Lackey quite a lot, especially back when I was younger. No need to be ashamed of liking them.
