Rpf sort of squicks me out, but i'll defend it in from of the new puritan kinkshaming police. If that makes me fandom granny, so be itI

This is exactly how I feel. RPF personally squicks me out, but as long as it isn't hurting the actual actors then I'm firmly in the YKINMK camp.

I'll be the fandom-granny with you. We can hiss at the kids and tell them 'bout how it was back in the day when people still used livejournal.

Add me to the Fandom Granny list too.

I'm really leery of saying there's a new puritan kinkshaming police. I think that might be a bit of a generalization, to be honest.

I feel there's definitely a sex-negative current in recent fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I think people are criticizing things that previously were not criticized. I'm not sure that's the same thing as being sex-negative as such, and if throwing everyone talking about things that way into a bucket labelled 'sex-negative' is fair.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Today an artist just got harassed and death threats over the fact someone deemed 30 year old Kylo Ren and 34 year old Hux to be "Child porn". Please. Do tell me how that's just criticizing things that were not criticized before.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, no, I would say that's wrong. I would also say that it's possible to criticize those things without doing the harassment and death threats.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
NAYRT Yikes. I haven't noticed a sex negative trend either but it may be the fandom I'm in or the people I associate with. There are always going to be a few lunatics in any fandom, though.

Is anyone else looking forward to the day when Tumblr decides that ALL porn is actually child porn because everyone was once a child? Come on... You know it's only a matter of time.

Oh they were criticized before.

Then YKINMK came into being.

Now the pendulum is swinging the other way again.

Criticizing a kink in the abstract is okay. Attacking a person because they like said kink, especially in a purely fictional context, I believe is not okay.

Personally I think it's due to the sex-negative current in recent feminism.

(ALL PIV SEX IS RAPE!!!!)

(Anonymous) 2016-06-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
recent feminism? what the fuck are you talking about, Andrea Dworkin died ten years ago, motherfucker

Oh please as if they're really feminists.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-07 05:50 am (UTC)(link)
It's been a long time since I read Dworkin (like, 30 years), but I thought her argument was that any act of heterosexual sex not initiated by the woman was rape. That's not quite the same thing as "PIV sex is rape", although I can see how people might elide the two.

Am I misremembering?

Same here, like it genuinely makes me a bit uncomfortable and I do not get it but so long as the actors aren't being harassed or bugged over it then people can write all the RPF fic they want.

(But I also hold this view with regular shipping too, keep fandom in fandom guys).
ketita: (Default)

[personal profile] ketita 2016-06-07 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. I am extremely not into RPF - but let people do whatever, I'll hang out in my corner of fandom. And I am against the sharing of fandom shippiness and especially porn with creators and actors, and this is doubly true for RPF. Don't harass, people. But have fun.
diet_poison: (Default)

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-06-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, same. I think RPF is a bit creepy and definitely not my cup of tea, but bullying people over it, threatening them, telling them to kill themselves, etc. etc.? Way way worse. Demonstrably actively harmful. Even calling out is over-the-top unless the RPF crosses a major line, like being about kids or someone linking a person to RPF about them or someone they know. So I'm pretty much in OP's camp with this one.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-07 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
It's one of the things that disgust me the most, but as long as they keep it far away from the actual people and safe in their little corner of the internet, then I can't complain.

I feel bad for the RPF that ship youtubers or whoever that actually go onto their tags and make videos of themselves reacting to being creeped out by fic and arc they find there. Sometimes there isn't even a safe place to hide...

[personal profile] meredith44 2016-06-07 01:21 am (UTC)(link)
That's how I feel. I dislike RPF, but assuming people aren't shoving it at the actors involved or threatening their girlfriends/boyfriends/spouses, I think it is YKINMK for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-07 09:51 am (UTC)(link)
I've been the object of "RPF" if you will. no, I'm not famous but was famously queer in my school and there were fanfics about me and two friends of mine. While the thought may bee sort of creepy and it may border on sexual harrassment if someone actually went and made the objectified person read these stories, simply writing them and sharing them among like-minded is so not a problem. even less so if it's with people who are really famous because that's what fame is about. people will fantasize about you, objectify you and you profit from that.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-07 04:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Interesting. Thanks for your perspective.
