OP, what fandom are you in where this is prevalent enough to be bothersome? Even in Teen Wolf (that biggest concentration of ABO I know of), it isn't all that common.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 07:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but it was pretty common in X-Men:First Class at one point (don't know if that has changed).

not OP

It's pretty common in Sherlock and SPN and J2.

This wank has been going on for like three damn years and nothing has changed and nothing new is being said about it, can we just stop now? People like things you don't like, it's nearly impossible to read ABO by ACCIDENT, and it's not like it makes up the majority of fics. There's a lot, yeah, but there's a lot of EVERYTHING that becomes a fandom trend. It's no worse than High School AU or Soulbond or whatever the current fad is.

Yup, that's how I feel about it. Not that I don't understand that trends like this can be irritating if they don't appeal to you, but there are a shitload of these type of fics that don't work for me, and I mostly just ignore them. There's not much else to do.

Unlike all those AUs I don't think I have ever come across an a/b/o fic that wasn't tagged or obviously labeled, and it's really the easiest thing to filter out of all the prevalent fandom things I don't like.

I've read it by accident. Back when it was was becoming a thing, I didn't know what A/B/O tags meant. (I was in Teen Wolf fandom, so I thought it had to do with the wolf's eye color like in the show.) So I'd read these and it was like ""OH GOD WHAT IS THIS???"" WHY DOES THIS KEEP HAPPENING???

+1

There have been times a fandom trend has driven me out of a particular fandom, but those trends have been things like a juggernaut pairing that I anti-ship or a persistent mischaracterization (imo) of a main character: stuff that really does show up in 80+% of fics and that's difficult or impossible to avoid. A/B/O is a blip in comparison, and it's funny-sad to see so many people wigging out over a completely avoidable trope featured in a small minority of fics.

At least it's not one of those body tattoo soulmate things?

My god, my fandom legitimately IS overrun with those and I just. I think it can be really interesting if done right but most people go for the cutesy option, which, whatever, but I'm sick of seeing it everywhere.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Alpha/Omega, but generally only in original slashfic. It's rare I've found a fanfic version of it I've liked because it usually demands a pretty hefty characterization murder.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-11 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Haha oh god, every time I look into A/B/O I run across a description of either Sam or Dean as a helpless omega and I just Can. Not. Even.

yeah I feel the same- it feels like every second fic some days?? At least you can come here and talk to other like minded people right? It helped me, at least, understand why I found ABO so upsetting but also why people with similar views to me might like it.

I've read a few (right plot, writer, pairing) but always despite the ABO part. The mechanics of pooping are just too much for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Uh..."the mechanics of pooping"? Anon, what sort of ABO are you reading? Lol I'm so confused!

It's not my jam(but then neither is almost every other AU setting in fic), but I'm not about to demand that other people stop writing something that they have fun with. I just don't read 'em, simple.

The OP didn't actually make a demand like that. I don't know, the comments here seem kind of harsh. All they did was say they don't like something. I can see how it can be frustrating to see a summary that looks interesting and then notice that it's an ABO universe and have to move on because you know it won't do it for you and then to have that happen again and again if it's a fandom where it's really common. Which is probably projecting on my part but all the people thinking that the OP is demanding that people stop doing what they like instead of just making an idle complaint are projecting something that isn't there too.

ABO is subsiding, thank god. It is all trans-headcanon now. Dicks and tits on the same body.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
What fandoms are you in? I rarely see trans headcanons with any regularity outside of like maybe one fandom (Haikyuu!! has a lot).

Eh, as long as they properly label that shit so people don't stumble into it by accident, I'm cool with it.

Unfortunately, some of them don't, and holy shit is it jarring to click on something for your favourite ship and suddenly heats and drooling asswombs and fucked up caste bullshit from nowhere.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I like it in a "guilty pleasure" sort of sense bc I think dom and sub roles are kinda hot.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 04:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel this. I'm not about to get all "STOP LIKING THIS THING THAT YOU LIKE, BECAUSE I DON'T LIKE IT"...but I don't like it and it is friggin' everywhere hahahaha

I basically refuse to read it until I start to hit that point when I'm in a black hole of a ship and I'm starting to tell by the page numbers I'm ABOUT TO RUN OUT OF FIC so then I go back and read the ABO shit. but the whole time I'm like "please don't start talking about breeding....plz..."
