Re: We've officially had the worst shooting in US history

Racism has nothing to do with it. I hate Christianity and Islam equally.

But it seems like only one of the two is actually killing homosexuals...

People are killing other people they hate for all kinds of reasons. Dylan Roof didn't kill those people because of Islam. Elliot Rogers didn't kill those people because of Islam. Adam Lanza didn't kill all those kids because of Islam. And there's no indication that the guy driving to Los Angeles Pride was doing so because of Islam.

There are two problems here. One is homophobia. One is mass shootings. Neither is unique to Islam. And anti-Islamic bigotry and restrictions on immigration will solve neither.

Hey darling, maybe look up Scott Lively and the Uganda Anti-Homosexuality bill some time. :D

Hey honey pie, did Scott Lively shoot 100+ people? :D

Re: We've officially had the worst shooting in US history

(Anonymous) 2016-06-12 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
He (a Christian) fought for and helped pass a bill that has killed and endangered the lives of every gay person in Uganda. So, no he didn't shoot 100+ people. He did something much worse.

"According to a report by Sexual Minorities Uganda:

The passing of AHA has given permission to a culture of extreme and violent homophobia whereby both state and non-state actors are free to persecute Uganda's LGBTI people with impunity.

This contributed to a rise of between 750% and 1,900% in homophobic incidents compared to previous years. A large number of medical personnel from the UN and other countries have left in protest of the bill."

Both Christianity and Islam are batshit crazy. It's true.

(But we can only talk shit about one.)

But it seems like only one of the two is actually killing homosexuals...

That's because Christians are too busy killing abortion providers.

Re: We've officially had the worst shooting in US history

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yes. Four abortion provider deaths in the entirety of the 2000s certainly do compare unfavorably to what just happened last night.

It's four too many, certainly, but there is absolutely no equivalence to violence perpetrated by Christians that most Christians disavow as opposed to radical Islamic violence that has people dancing in the streets.

Not in modern times in the West. Some places in the world, you can be killed for being gay under Christian-theocratic governments.

And of course there's the history of the Crusades, Inquisition, conquest of the New World, etc. Oh and speaking of the New World remember how the Aztecs captured their neighbors and then violently sacrificed them to their gods?

This level of violence in the name of religion is not a historically unique phenomenon that only applies to radical Islam.

I'm not saying radical Islam isn't a unique problem now, but I don't understand people claiming violence is somehow inherent to Islam or even that Islam is more prone to it than religious radicalism in general.

Re: We've officially had the worst shooting in US history

(Anonymous) 2016-06-13 03:41 am (UTC)(link)
Excuse me if I'm not super fussed about something that happened a thousand years ago (the Crusades, seriously?), but am more concerned about what's happening right now on my own doorstep.

Violence in the name of anything is endemic to humanity at large. I mean, we could also go off on a total tangent about how many millions of people Communism has killed over the past hundred years or so, if you want.

The fact is that radical Islam, right here, today, glorifies mass murder. So let's try not to deflect from that by going "But other people did it too!"

ok I feel like you read the first half of my comment and then responded before reading the second half

like I specifically acknowledged that radical Islam is a unique modern problem

I'm just refuting the idea that violence is somehow intrinsic to Islam in a way that it's not to other religions (or, as you said, to people in general)

In the US, yeah. Both are guilty of it in other parts of the world.

(Not that it's a good reason to blanket hate an entire religion)

Well, Xians might not be *physically killing* LGBT people, but their rhetoric and ranting and endless string of anti-LGBT legislation (and their approval of hate) has definitely led some people to think it's perfectly okay to harass, bully and/or attack and/or kill LGBT people in the US.

So, to me, they're equally to blame.

PLEASE stop saying Xians. It's not the shorthand you think it is.

It might be but my impression as a flat-memer was that you had a problem with Asians.

I do not know what a 'flat-memer' is and Xian, like Xmas, is something i've used for years. So, no, no problem with Asians of any kind.

Flat-memer (perhaps flat-viewer would be more accurate here) is one who browses through a comm using the flat version. It means you frequently see comments in isolation. (like so)

Xian, like Xmas, is something i've used for years.

It's also a city in China, a Chinese name, and a Chinese word--specifically, one connected to Taoism--a different religion entirely. If you google Xian, everything that comes up will be related to China, not Christianty.

Dunno why you're so sold on the word, when it's fairly obscure. If you want to be dismissive of Christians, there's ones with a much clearer meaning (Bible-thumper, holy roller, etc), and if you're not wanting to be dismissive, there's what they call themselves (Christians).

NA. Oh, shit that makes much more sense. I was reading that X as as Z sound and thought you were complaining about Zionists in some new internet way.

Heee! I...would never have thought to put X for Z, i dunno why. It's the default X-sound. :)

Also, they are, in fact, physically killing LGBT people.

The fact that this particular act of violence was perpetrated by a non-Christian does not erase the long history of "good" Christians beating and murdering LGBT folks.

This is 100 percent true. So many try to keep their hands 'clean' by just passing laws, but I'm the sure good 'ole boys who killed Matthew Shepherd went to church every Sunday.

Funny how, when you dig down to the bottom of some of the ugliest prejudices and behaviors, there's some 'sky god' saying it's all good.

Except with all the "therapies" and "Camps" the christians have set up.

Muslims may be killing us, but christians are torturing us. I know which evil I consider the lesser.
