Faking It had a trans man main character in season 3

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 12:45 pm (UTC)(link)
He... wasn't a main character at all? He was an antagonist/eventual love interest for one of the secondary mains.

>Have passing privilege over 95% of trans women
>Complain about muh representation

I seriously hope you don't do that.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Where are your stats from?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 02:05 am (UTC)(link)
Please don't use 4chan style posting, or the word "muh."

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
Uh....yeah here's how I know you're full of shit:

You actually think trans men pass better than "95% of trans women". First off, that's an insult to trans women, think about what you're saying, basically that 95% of them are so mannish they'll never pass. Second, you've obviously never spent time around actual trans men. I have friends who have been on T for years, and are post top surgery, and they still don't pass. It's not exactly a rare phenomenon either. Not everybody looks like Aydian Dowling.

Wow. I am offended on your behalf. That is terrible.

looooool

Oh man this is hilarious. I didn't even read this secret until I scrolled past and was like, "Why is there a lady with a fake beard... oh."

Yeah, this looks like no trans man I have ever encountered.

They didn't even try with the make-up, did they?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:01 pm (UTC)(link)
While you have every right to be upset, I'm not sure I agree with some of your points. While it wasn't the most impressive portrayal of a trans man, I feel like the show did its best given the limitations. Tatiana Maslany did change her voice and body language, IMO. Tony spoke in a lower register, and whether or not you believe she succeeded, she was clearly trying for a more stereotypically masculine body language and carriage.

As for the beard/hair... well, look. They do a pretty good job with what is probably not a large budget, but there's only so much you can do when it's ONE ACTRESS playing 11 different clones. You can just as easily point out that Rachel's hair screams "wig", because it is one. You can say the exact same thing about M.K's hair, too. When you have to hide long hair under a short wig, it's hard to do and still look natural. They clearly can't just cut Maslany's hair off entirely, so they have two choices: a latex skullcap with fake (short) hair over her real hair, or just try and pull off the long hair on a trans man look. The former will cost money and still look terrible. As for the beard... sorry, but a lot of people can't grow great beards, especially those who were born female and are transitioning with hormone injections. And while I'd never dream of saying so to anyone's face, yes, sometimes it DOES look like a chin full of pubes.

Do I think Tony was an amazing job? No. Do I think they made a good faith effort? Yes.

Those on fleek eyebrows really throw the whole look off, and I've seen cosplayers with better beards than that. Hell, I've had a cosplay beard better than that, and it was all make-up with no hair.

And why the hell not just... give the actress a low ponytail? It's basically the uniform for long-haired men.

Oh Lord.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
While I agree that the costuming could have been a lot better, I also recognize the show had all sorts of practical constraints to deal with on that front. And personally I think the writing and acting really made this character work. *shrugs* YMMV obviously.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-16 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I love and adore Orphan Black, but when I saw Tony I was really confused. I think typically they do a great job with make up and costuming, but Tony was a mess on that aspect. I thought Tatiana Maslany did a decent job at the acting, but the shit make up really ruined the illusion for me

silverr: abstract art of pink and purple swirls on a black background (OB_allison)

[personal profile] silverr 2016-06-17 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I like OB, and I think Maslany is overall amazing, but yeah, Tony did not work for me.

(The 'hitting on Felix' thing in S3 -- I haven't watched S4 yet -- also just did not go down well for me, because I couldn't buy that Felix would be attracted to someone who looked so much like Sarah.)

Yeahhhh that's horrible costuming. The actress looks like a joke side character in some 90s teen movie.

I have so many mixed feelings about Tony that I'm glad he only showed up in one episode. I don't think there was any way they could have done it that wouldn't have been disappointing on some level, but at the same time if they didn't do it at all it would have been a bit weird for a show that puts so much emphasis on the importance (or not) of biology in relation to who you are as a person.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:05 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame you, anon. As soon as I saw that picture I was like "Oh god, I'm gonna be cringing whenever I see that person's face on the screen" and gave up any desire to continue watching OB.

I haven't seen this but yeah this isn't great male make up at ALL. And definitely not just budget stuff, the application and styling straight up looks bad. I am guessing the make up artist just had no experience with those techniques?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-17 01:38 am (UTC)(link)
To me the most disconcerting effect is that by the time you've been on hormones long enough to grow that much facial hair, your face will have reshaped and look a lot more masculine. I mean obviously not always, but the vast majority of the time the face changes happen way, way before the facial hair starts coming in. You don't get the bearded lady look.

I can't disagree with most of your content--it reads as bad drag to me--but I will shake my head at you for expecting any sort of progressive anything from Orphan Black.
