Write unless the people explicitly say they don't like it. Don't write about minors (whether shipping story or not). JUST NEVER SHARE IT WITH THE PEOPLE IN QUESTION, WHY WOULD YOU? ARE YOU INSANE?????

Pretty much this, except people should stay the hell away from some subjects, such as non-con and bestiality.

And your last point goes double on photo manips.

Seconding every word of this.

Re: What are your thoughts on RPF?

For me, it depends on the type of RPF.

If it's the kind that just casts real people as characters based loosely on themselves, especially in an AU situation, I'm okay with that. It's more like using the real people as actors and archetypes.

The stuff that tries to ship people as their actual selves, though, especially when the authors get tinfoily? I will nope the fuck out.

Good answer.

I used to look for Lady Gaga fic, because it's playing on Gaga as a persona. But one was a shipfic with Stefi Germanotta and some other real person, and that was a bit strange and awkward; I think it was over a line.

The J2 stuff, with all the AU's, is pathological.

If they have a public persona then it's fine to write about those. But don't go delving into their personal lives and use it for stories, that's just fucked up.

RPF is mostly fine as long as its not about minors, and you keep it on the DL.

RP theorizing is also fun as long as you remember that it's basically a game. Unless you're the one person who was writing Taylor Swift / Tom Hiddleston fanfiction in which case you're clearly a wizard.

It's not my jam but so long as those that like it don't shove into the actors/whoever's faces or harass them about it then have fun with it.

I read some jared/jensen stuff but I don't really care for the rest of it

I write some RPF about historical personas.

Re: What are your thoughts on RPF?

It disgusted me until I got a crush on a public figure. Now it disgusts me and I also disgust myself.

I don't even know myself where my lines fall on this. Like, I used to ship SPN RPF. But the second one of them got married (I can't remember who), I just couldn't. It seemed wrong. Which is ridiculous, because it's not like they weren't dating those people before hand.

Re: What are your thoughts on RPF?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-19 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
For the love of God, don't show it to the people you're writing about unless they ask to see it. Don't show them what other people are writing about them, either. Almost all fic about minors is really creepy, unless you are also a child and are writing self insert fic about meeting your favorite actor and then it's kind of cute. Writing non-con, death-fic, graphically violent fic, etc. about real people is majorly squicky, but if you must then try to avoid putting it somewhere where the people you're writing about can easily find it.

With that said, most of it is pretty harmless, even if it's not my thing. Just-- if you're writing about living people (or recently dead people), take a second to think about how you would feel if some stranger was writing this about you or a loved one and act accordingly.

I stay away from it, but ykinmk as long as you don't bother the celebs with it.

I read it and write it. Not a lot of it and it's slash. :) And no, I don't believe my pairings are really in love with each other or anything like that. Good friends? Yes.

I figure that anyone in the public eye, be it actors, car show presenters, band members, etc, have at least somewhat of a public persona and that's what I'm writing about. Unless you know the celebs personally, you can only go what they show and tell publicly (and if I knew any celebs personally, I doubt I'd write fic about them).

I agree with keeping fanworks away from who you're writing about--but that also applies to fiction about fictional characters--especially if it's smutty. I doubt most actors/actresses want to see THAT either.

I only post my RPF on AO3 and it's locked so that only registered/logged in users can read it. So, if someone I'm writing about sees MY fic, they've had to gone looking for it. What I hate is the number of people who DON'T lock their RPF/RPS fic.

Outside of parody, I find it creepy and weird as hell.

To each his own, of course.

Love it, read it, write it, have no issues with it, since most 'real people' in the fic are just fandom's interpretation of them/what they see in public, which is just not them.

Just no kids, please.

Not my cup of tea, creeps me out too much, but I have no problem with other people enjoying it as long as they don't bother the real life people with it.

Re: What are your thoughts on RPF?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
As long as the writers/readers don't force it onto the real people, talk to them about it, or believe that they are totally in love because one fanfic said so, then I'm perfectly fine with it.

Not my first favourite form of fanfic.

I actually prefer stories about actors being actors - behind-the-scenes stories instead of AUs with OCs wearing the names.

I will also support the theme of not shoving it in the faces of the actors, or even expecting them to ever match your shipping preferences.

I'm personally squicked by it unless it's historical RPF and everybody involved has been dead for decades, but even stuff involving living actors is probably pretty harmless most of the time. When it's not... Tinhatters creep me out and make me feel sorry for the actors, even in fandoms I'm not in. Don't share it with the actors, do NOT share it with their families, and RPF that involves spouses, children, or other family and friends not in the public eye= NO. People who harass actors and ask when they're gonna leave their wives for their co-stars, or speculate that an actresse's baby's nose looks more like her costar's than her husband's... I feel embarassed to go to autograph signings and stuff because part of me wants to blurt out "I just like your work and want your autograph, your private life is totally your business I promise we're not all that crazy."

I have to say, I'm really surprised that everyone here is so against RPF.

...Oh wait, no, I'm not, actually, because this whole comm is full of judgey prudes.

Who the fuck cares what people write fic about? WTF is wrong with you people?

If it's a persona the celebrity developed, like Lady Gaga or Ziggy Stardust, that's fine. That's essentially a character to me, so it's no different than writing any other character.

Now, if the writer takes the actual person and starts writing about personal issues and relationships, that's where it's gets REALLY awkward and uncomfortable. The worst thing about it is that people actually SHOW the celebrities the stories. I mean...WHY? A select few may be cool with it, but still, don't go showing them that stuff. It makes you look like a creepy weirdo, to be blunt.

I read it sometimes and I might try writing it one day just don't let the people in question see.
