He's basically the fictional version of the social justice movement.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 10:59 pm (UTC)(link)
... except for the slut shaming and whole religion thing and then... uh, what's left that's all social justicey?

Defending the poor and disenfranchised? But yeah, the comparison does not quite stand.

I've seen many SJW who kink shame. And kink shaming is basically the same as slut shaming (ie shaming someone for how they have consensual sex).

No.

No opinion on GoT because it only took me one season to realize I hated it. But I will say I agree in most other media. Heads of fictional religious organizations (or even non-fictional in the case of historical) are very tough to do, because they tend to go to one extreme or another. I mean, that's probably often true for most characters who are heads of powerful institutions, to be fair, but religion is such a touchier topic and invariably, whoever is writing has some opinion themselves on it (one way or the other) and it's obvious.

At least you know you are insufferable.

I sort of agree, but I do think the High sparrow is a fascinating character. Yes, he's a zealot, but I respect that he's an uncorruptable character i a world where everyone is corrupted. So was Ned, I guess, but Ned wasn't really clever about it.

I would not call him incorruptible. It is pretty obvious that he is playing some kind of game to gain power for himself. Plus he has some pretty creepy habits.

I don't mind him, but I do with he would give less speeches. They always put me to sleep.

I definitely wouldn't call him incorruptible, either. A person's who's willing to imprison people in filthy, dark dungeons before they've even had a trial is not a great person. This behavior is in direct contrast with the face he presents to the world, i.e. a devout, kindly old man. In my book, that's corrupt.

Is it only religious organizations or are you suspicious of all kinds of powerful people?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Not OP, but I can admit that I am suspicious of people in power in religious organizations, but not necessarily other people in power, and that reflects my own view on organized religion. Religious organizations like the Catholic church have such a long, corrupt history, and control people through the irrational and antiquated. If religion is not simple and peaceful, I don't trust it. It's not that I think religion is always bad, I just don't believe there's any need for religion to have hierarchy or organization at all, really - and history has basically proven religious hierarchical organizations are basically as cutthroat as politics, plus all the crazy that often goes hand in hand with religion.

Yeah, it is. Irrelevant aside: I didn't know he had such a fuzzy chest pelt.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
I feel kinda the same but that's precisely why I like the high sparrow who, apparently, is both - good insofar as he really has ideals and compassion and bad insofar as he is a ruthless player and manipulator who will stop at little to nothing for power. like, you know, real historical figures, not just of the religious sort.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Why does a good man with ideals and compassion throw people in a prison cell and keep them in the dark, in rags, with regular abuse from their keepers? Mind you, these people haven't been proven to have committed any crime yet, this is before their trials. Is that what compassionate people do?

Do you feel this way about people in positions of political authority? If so, at least you are consistent (and I sort of agree with you but I'm not as cynical). If not, why not? What's the difference? Power has a corrupting influence no matter its origins, IMO. And while I'm wary of organized religion that involves a great deal of money and power and intricate power structures etc., I don't think it's impossible to be a religious or spiritual leader on a smaller scale and still be a really good person, and in fact I think (some) individuals in that capacity do a lot of good.

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, OP, there just ain't no pleasing you, is there?

(Anonymous) 2016-06-20 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
not OP, but maybe religious heads who are fleshed out, three-dimensional characters, and not cliche extremes one way or the other, might do the trick?

We'll have to see how the show turns out but I'd bet money that he's going to turn out to be a corrupt figure in the end. How many powerful characters in the GoT universe don't abuse their their power at one point or another? Maybe Ned Stark (who still helped overthrow a kind, albeit a terrible one), but Ned Stark is dead.

What amuses me about this thread though, is how many people bought the "he just wants to help the poor" thing hook line and sinker even though it requires them to ignore everything else he's done, which is basically take over a city with his own private army of violent religious fanatics. Geez, people are easy marks.

Not a perfect comparison, but I'll make it anyway

[personal profile] feotakahari 2016-06-20 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
There's this thing religious people do sometimes where they express skepticism that anyone could be an atheist and still be moral. If you're not being good because God wants you to, what other reason could you possibly have for not hurting people and being selfish? I think that says a lot about their own mindset.

If you say that people in a position of religious authority would have to be corrupt, I think that also says a lot about you. You can probably figure out whether you would be corrupt if you were in a position of religious authority, but it's a bit much to assume the whole of humanity is like you.

I find this secret odd, because I don't think that character is portrayed as being wholly good *or* evil. He has expressed some good points, but the way he implements the religion has become corrupt by thinking that they have the only moral highground. That's not the same as being a pantomime villain. Unless you think it's not possible for a religious person to make good points of course.
