(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)And I agree with the secret itself as a whole. There's lots of things people like that I personally don't get the appeal of. But unless they're somehow, some way, forcing me to watch/read/listen to it, I don't really see why I should get all bent out of shape about them liking it.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)And with the "bad influence" argument I see critics put forth, I like to think most readers are smart enough to tell the difference between reality and fiction. Women getting into bad relationships would happen with or without the existence of 'Twilight' (or '50 Shades', or books of that sort), and blaming books for that serious, deep-seated problem, as well as the problem of readers who CAN'T tell the difference between fiction and reality, always feels awfully simplistic a solution/answer to me.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)I mean, I remember just assuming anyone I liked who seemed halfway intelligent hated Twilight, which led to a lot of cringe.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)It's the same with werewolves. SMeyer actually uses the traditional mythology for both - it's that we're used to vampires burning up in the sun and werewolves being cursed, as opposed to just being Shifters who've chosen the wolf form. (I'll grant you, I prefer it being a curse, but SMeyer didn't invent the other kind.)

I will admit to liking the movies though.

Like, really allow the misogyny of that statement to sink in. "Punched in the vagina." Just let that sink in.
There is an insane amount of hatred toward female-directed media from dudes like this. I remember reading a review of one of the Sex and the City movies that ('jokingly") advocated burning Sarah Jessica Parker alive. This was a mainstream review (not a blogger), BTW.

There's plenty of things I don't like or care for, but I can't be bothered to go into fan spaces and tell them they suck for liking it, they're allowed to like it even if I don't.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)A lot of people assumed that I was a Twilight fan and I felt like I had to overexplain why I didn't like it, and I recall at first feeling relieved that other people didn't like it either so we had a bit of fun making fun of the things we didn't enjoy (I read the first book but that was it). But when I saw anti-groups that really were into really trashing the Twilight fans, I felt like it grew into something else and I couldn't get on board with that.
Eventually it was easy to stay away from the Twilight series once people stopped asking me if I was a fan.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)There's having fun bashing stuff, and then there's being a complete shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-03 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)I wouldn't openly make fun of any of the fans though, I just assume they'll one day grow out of it and move on.
Most of the antis frankly, only hate it because it's aimed at teenage girls. A lot of people don't want to admit it, but that's exactly what it is.

(Anonymous) 2016-07-04 12:01 am (UTC)(link)I'm inclined to agree with this, yeah.
