This woman is so overly sensitive to friendly conversation, I don't understand how she lives in this world. And then in the last sentence, I realize she doesn't. Most of her interaction with other people probbaly comes from Tumblr.

A woman doesn't like being sexually threatened everywhere she goes? HOW DARE SHE!

(Anonymous) 2016-07-13 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah. Someone talking to you about a common interest. So threatening.

Look, I am the first to say women aren't for public consumption.

However, what she describes is not sexually threatening. It's a brand new semi-social platform and the guy was a bit weird. Is it cool? No. But it's not a threat, and the way she writes about games and life is just exhausting sounding TBH.

Re: Gender Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ah the "You must be so exhausted" cliche.

Yes she probably is, but she needs to be wary of every threat men can potentiall present since any lack of vigilance will be thrown in her face as "Asking for it"

Yes, it's exhausting but while men are threats we have to be exhausted.

She sounds like she shouldn't be playing this game.

Like, the whole point of it is to go outside and meet people. If she doesn't want to go outside and meet people, then, well...

And also, wtf with the "how AWFUL is it that all of these people have met each other through this game?"

That was the part I found most offputting.

Plus, isn't the game supposed to be social?

Yup, it definitely is. At its core, it's a community-building game.

Is there a need for the all-caps, double space stuff? It's getting annoying.

No. That isn't how that works.

Re: Gender Thread

That entire comment. By that logic, all humans *are* potential murderers. Hell, we should just kill pit bulls. Just take them all out and shoot them in the head. Because all pit bulls *are* potential killers.

So...here's the problem I have with this narrative: it encourages women to be afraid. Not aware of one's surroundings, as is sensible, but afraid, constantly, at all times and in every setting. And how do people behave when they're afraid all of the time? What do they start to do, when told that they've been born vulnerable and that there's nothing they can do about it?

This is robbing us of power. It's encouraging us to send ourselves back into seclusion, and it's making the argument that our lives are in men's hands. Naturally. Irrevocably.

It is the exact opposite of what it purports to be.

I caught myself a stalker from what I thought was going to be just a friendly conversation playing Ingress. So very, very Enlightened. I knows simply being talked to by a male stranger in public is not the end of the world, but I admit I still get my hackles up in situations like this.

Re: Gender Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
Stalker how?

Re: Gender Thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-14 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
Consistently following me around. Admitting to tracking me down by seeing where my username had been active when things got too coincidental with my weird schedule (we were both students at the same school). Frequent PMs after I stopped responding. Not leaving me alone when I explained that, no, thank you, I really wasn’t interested in coordinating in the game, and yes, I was still seeing someone, and no, I didn’t feel comfortable telling him where I lived because I didn’t know him very well, and fuck you, you don't try to kiss strangers who have repeatedly expressed their disinterest.

He did cut it out after I threatened to get campus police involved, and I stopped playing Ingress until I moved far from campus and made a new Google account.

I'll only go out of my way to find portals (or these days, find gyms or pokemon) if I'm with a buddy, and I probably don't have to be that paranoid anymore, and it could have been a shit-ton worse, but.

Sounds like you met a very confused and inexperienced nerd boy, likely with some other issues he doesn't know need addressing. I can say that he meant no harm but that doesn't excuse the harm he caused. I am sorry that he made you fearful.

Maddy Myers did one of these articles, too. I was glad to see a lot of the regular commenters calling her out on it. Even in a feminist circle, there's room to recognize when people are being too hostile.

I assume she "lives in this world" the same way everyone else who has ever been annoyed at a minor thing (which is basically everyone, period) does.

That argument annoys me no matter what it's aimed at.
