I believe in voting. I think Trump is terrifying. Yet Clinton's VP pick is making me seriously think about not voting. Really? She picks someone even more moderate than her, and someone who is anti-Choice at that? After all the feminist support she got?

Re: Confession thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I have to laugh a little at the progressive outrage over her VP pick. Of COURSE she's picking someone a little more moderate. Elections are always about swing states, and this basically assures her Virginia. This choice was definitely the smartest and most strategic - and, for the record, I hardly think this guy is that bad. He says he's generally pro-life, but has had a fairly pro-choice voting record. Otherwise, he's pretty much just liberal. He's also well-liked and scandal-free.

The Bernie crowd needs to realize that he and Clinton agree on like 95% of issues, and that Bernie wants you to vote for her.

Re: Confession thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
But the thing is, she's very moderate. She's never going to win Republican votes. Picking someone more Progressive would have gotten her the progressive votes she may now not get. I think it would have been smarter to go in that direction. She's a moderate. She's already got the moderates in her camp. Moderate Republicans who might consider voting for her already hate Trump so much they'll do that. Her VP choice won't make a difference for that. But it could have made a difference on the other side.

Re: Confession thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:10 pm (UTC)(link)
She's only "very moderate" on a relative scale to ultra-liberals. Compared to most leading Republicans, she is extremely liberal. I don't get why she gets accused of being "moderate" when, if you lay out her platform next to most Republican senators, etc., she clearly is sharply liberal.

I'd agree that she probably won't get many Republican votes, but that wasn't going to happen anyway. Most Republicans and Democrats (registered) would never vote the opposite party. The moderates are exactly what she needs, and no one can risk Trump winning. She played it safe to make her candidacy seem that much more logical and sane compared to Trump's insanity.

Frankly, any logical far-left liberal will vote for her. The ones who go rogue and vote third party are a crazy minority, and she needs moderate votes more than she needs the fringe crazies who are willing to throw away their vote for the benefit of Trump.

I don't know that a more lefty VP would have gotten any of the Bernie or Bust people. Anyone to the left of her is going to hold their nose and vote for her, vote third party, or stay home. I don't think that changes no matter who her VP is. I think the swing voters in the center are generally more persuadable which is why they're swing voters in the first place.

Sanders and Clinton agree on 95% of issues but how many of those issues can we trust Clinton to not drop if the polls swing the other way?

She's flipped from being pro-TPP to anti-TPP right back to being pro-TPP within the course of a year. What can you trust her to stick to?

Re: Confession thread

I was a Clinton supporter in the primaries, and I'm still not terribly enthused about the Tim Kaine pick. For one thing, I don't think Virginia is really meaningfully a swing state in this election. I think it was already in the bag for Clinton.

But for another thing... I mean, I love coalition building, and I completely accept the idea that the Democratic Party has space for centrist liberals in it, but those aren't the only people in the party. I'm on board with Clinton in part because she had a lot of rhetoric about standing up for some positive values, from an admittedly centrist-liberal point of view. And then she goes and nominates someone who's outrageously pro-bank and also soft on abortion and also doesn't really provide anything to get excited about? I'm all for coalition building but we're also fighting for something and Tim Kaine seems a little divorced from all that. Kaine is comfortably to the right of Clinton. It's dispiriting, that's all.

I agree completely. With the chance of a Trump presidency looming, this will ensure the votes a lot of centrist Republicans who haven't drunk the Trump Kool-Aid but also aren't suffering from Clinton Derangement Syndrome (they exist!)

I've been saying it from the start and everyone's been giving me shit for it, but I'm having so much schadenfreude at how everything is proving that she can't be trusted with anything, even down to the pro-woman choices she claims are a core of her campaign. I can't believe people still trust her to do anything she promises.

No, I'm not Republican and I hate Trump.

Re: Confession thread

(Anonymous) 2016-07-23 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
In fairness here: I'm not a fan of the Kaine pick, but he is demonstrably in favor of pro-choice laws and policies. He's soft on abortion, he's not anti-choice. That's a relevant distinction here.

Why in the world would you feel that? It was a smart choice for a VP. I consider myself ultra liberal, but I also want Hillary to win and Trump to lose. Can't wait to never see Trump's ugly mug again and welcome Madam President to office - it doesn't matter if I don't agree with her on everything, most of our platforms line up just fine and I hope she picks up as many swing states as possible.

You gotta vote. If you're in a swing state, anyway. I mean, there just is no meaningful choice.

Re: Confession thread

No, you don't have to vote. You can stay home if you want to.

Of course, if your missing vote means the person you didn't want to win ends up winning, well... you can't really blame anyone else, can you?

Re: Confession thread

He condemns abortion morally, but doesn't want it to be illegal. Morality =/= legality.

You can condemn abortion and still be pro-choice.

Re: Confession thread

Not really, by publicly speaking out against abortion even if voting for it he is still socially normalizing a pretty abhorrent and regressive movement. It is the whole hate the sin, love the sinner bullshit which never works out well in practice. Either vote have the courage of your convictions and vote for what you believe in, or quit trying slant the social debate while trying to appear progressive.

It's weird to read everyone saying that Kaine is such a moderate because I feel like the consensus on him in Virginia (or at least northern Virginia where I grew up) was that he's a liberal Democrat. Although he also came up in the time of extreme crazy Republicans like Cuccinelli and George "Macaca" Allen, so maybe he seemed more liberal than moderate by comparison?

Re: Confession thread

When the Bernie bros call him "moderate", what they really mean, is he isn't Bernie Sanders, and he also isn't a woman or POC.

Why don't you click off msnbc or Huffington post and look at some unbiased sites. Heck, go read his position papers on his website. You might be pleasantly suprised. No, he isn't going to give away the store like Bernie, but he is going to put this country and its people first. That should be a plus for ALL Americans.

Hillary's Veep

Her VP pick was carefully calculated to be someone who would in no way overshadow her on the campaign trail or steal focus from her in the news. That is why she chose a boring ass no-name who was definitely not a BAME. Cannot let someone else getting her headlines.

I think he's probably of the same line of thinking as me.

I, personally, would only get an abortion under the most extreme of circumstances (primarily nonviability) because I personally believe life starts at conception.

However, I also believe 100% that all women should have the right to decide what is right for them because not everyone believes the way that I do. Live and let live, and I would rather not go back to the back alley/coathanger days.
