Yep. That's how she sells records, by convincing people (usually young women) that she's just like you... if you had rich parents who could boost your music career until you were a millionaire and could soothe your romantic heartbreak by, oh, I don't know, buying yourself another mansion, dating another famous dude, or continuing to never have a single clue about what poverty and want feels like.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 10:49 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, so is the fucking entirety of modern consumer culture. Stop pretending that Taylor Swift plays a uniquely villainous role here. Shit.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Where did I indicate she was unique in this? Just because it's a common phenomenon doesn't make it good.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Because, in general, people talk about her and her popularity in a way they don't talk about other people, and in particular, your comment was framed on the particular and individual level - in terms of personal choices and duplicity - not in terms of a systemic understanding.

It's not my fault you wrote a post about how she's lying.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
In general, people do a lot of things. I'm not sure why you think that I'm strictly bound by what other people sometimes do. Swift gets a lot of criticism, both fair and unfair. Her fans are awfully quick to jump on anyone who's not 100% gushing over her, I notice.

Oh, and where did I say she was lying? Presumably it's in the same sentence where I said she was unique in her marketing strategy, right? You seem to be reading a lot more into my comments than is actually there.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
You said that she has an intentionally convinces people that she is just like them, when in fact that's not true. So you said that she's duplicitous. That's what you said.

Also I think it's probably less the case that she lies to people to convince then that she's like them, and more that people in any situation have similar emotions and relations, but that's another point.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
DA

But.... trying to convince people that they're just like you and they understand you in order to get you to buy things is how marketing works?? It's naive to say Taylor Swift doesn't do it when that's how the whole industry is. She's not the special case that's immune and honest, I promise you.

She sings about things people can relate to and that's great, but it's not by convenient accident they downplay or don't mention all the things that make her different that are impossible to achieve by people not born lucky. That's not calling her a liar, that's calling her savvy about sales.

To be fair, you don't know if OP is poor.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm willing to bet they've had closer brushes with it than Taylor Swift ever has or will.

Possibly, obviously I doubt they can buy a mansion. But, I stent a lot of my life with people better off than me, and it always seemed to me that at a certain level of "comfortable" people do seem to identify more with celebs (rather than envy them, if that makes sense).

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
In the U.S., plenty of people who could be considered poor identify strongly with celebrities, too. SOMEBODY is watching the Kardashians.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Because it's fun to imagine living in luxury.

Makes sense to me. My family is nowhere near rich but we've never been in any danger of coming close to poverty, and personally I find it easier to imagine an even more comfortable lifestyle than a poor one. There are certain worries that I've just never had to live with.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-09 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Why in the world do you think rich people don't date, experience heartbreak, and get over it? What in the world does any of this have to do with poverty?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 12:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm, yet another comment claiming I said X whenever I never did.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 07:43 am (UTC)(link)
Nayrt

Actually, you implied that her heartbreak, etc. doesn't count/is irrelevant because she's rich, ergo rich people can't feel heartbreak ever.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 02:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You implied a lot of things that you never said

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You really relate to Taylor Swift's paranoia, don't you?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 05:48 pm (UTC)(link)
You really relate to being a dickhead, don't you?

But the OP is specifically talking about that, while saying that Swift is different to her in other ways, including her wealth. So I'm not sure why saying 'she's rich' negates the secret.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
Just because she's mega rich doesn't mean that she can't know heartbreak. Studies have been done that prove that actually money doesn't buy happiness. I can't be bothered looking them up but it has been proved. So the idea of 'soothing heartbreak' with 'another mansion' is a false equivalence to being dumped. She may be a millionaire superstar but she is human. Sure, she uses it to sell music, I don't think OP is denying that. OP clearly relates to her on a human level, when it comes to finding love. I'm not a particular fan of Taylor but I can see where OP is coming from.

The one I read said that once you get over around £40,000 p/a your happiness stops increasing with your wealth. So it certainly makes you happier about things you couldn't afford when you were poor and it's easier to deal with emotional stuff if you're not struggling, but on the other hand Swift deals with stuff I could never cope with, no matter how much money I had.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 10:33 pm (UTC)(link)
That said, it's a hell of a lot easier to be unhappy and rich than it is to be unhappy and poor.

The secret literally says the OP knows they're different, and cites money and career as two of the reasons. Romantic shenanigans still suck.
