[Sherlock Holmes]

Surely there must be gen where this is not the case?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 10:57 pm (UTC)(link)
The fandom has far less genfic than you'd think. OP's best bet for genfic is to look for published short stories in collections, or perhaps the recent novels commissioned from Anthony Horowitz by the ACD estate.

Weird, I'd have figured that's a fandom with a lot of gen.

Eh. In my experience, Sherlock has a bit more gen fic than similarly sized fandoms with such rabid slash fans.

There is a LOT of gen for the book canon (as well as for the BBC version, not as much for the RDJ movies though). A lot has disappeared, thanks to geocities etc being lost but there's still a lot on ff.net and LJ from years ago and AO3 has a decent amount too.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't want him to have a partner in canon because, yeah, it would ruin everything. But I thought that was what fic was for.

It's a problem. :/ A few years ago I would read almost any pastiche* I could find, but I was really frustrated with any that added female protags, bc it usually ended up w/ Holmes falling for them. I had to quit even trying to read any that did that. (I tried to write my own w/ a girl who had a more mentor/daughter relationship with Holmes, so I could write a girl character and explore the dynamic without romance...but I never did finish it.)

*published book, not fanfic tho

Laurie King has a whole series that pairs Holmes with a rather Mary Sueish OFC. They're interesting mysteries, but I find the relationship really forced and annoying.

Same. No tyvm.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Shrug. I found Mary Russell interesting and complex in her own right, and she made a good lens to see stories.

Each to their own.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I would've liked the character and series better if it didn't advertise itself as being Sherlock Holmes fic. As you say, she's an interesting and complex character, but shoehorning her into the SH universe doesn't feel very natural. Especially when the author feels the need to insult Watson and downplay Holmes' abilities in order to prop up Mary.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-11 12:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I did get very annoyed at the way Watson was written. (I feel that he's probably smarter than he portrays himself in the stories and has a bit of self-deprecation going on.)

Eh.

I loved the first one, but the relationship angle felt very cringeworthy to me. :/

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Same. I think it's the fact that she's FIFTEEN when she meets Holmes, who later becomes her husband. Ick.

It never felt organic to me. I mean, the author is clearly a skilled writer. All the characters are interesting, the plots, the writing, etc. But the story never developed the feelings between the characters enough to make me believe it and not feel creeped out by the suddenness, age gap, etc. A lot of people felt that way, so we're not the only ones!

I wish they had just stayed friends, mentor/student sort of thing. I liked that. Or, if it had to be romance, really drag it out over several stories in a slow burn so it feels like it's actually from the characters, not just slapped onto the story.

Pish. I've written a shedload of OFCs and *not a one* falls in love with and only one fucks Holmes [and that only in a professional capacity]. OTOH they are often [not invariably, though] H/W fics, so you won't like them for other reasons.

Wouldn't it be rather hard to have much Holmes fic without OCs, unless Holmes is investigating Watson stealing from Lestrade?

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret says "prominent" OFCs. Presumably OP isn't referring to minor characters, but rather OFCs created specifically for the purpose of shipping with Holmes.
tweedisgood: (Default)

[personal profile] tweedisgood 2016-08-10 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not what they say, though - and it isn't even a fair definition. "Prominent" character means a main or important character, not automatically a love interest. A client, a First Person POV observer character, allies, a villainess, all could be prominent OFCs. Mary Sutherland, to give a canon example.

OP here.

(Anonymous) 2016-08-10 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
The ayrt was correct, though. I didn't state it well in the secret, sorry. I have no problem with any OCs that are there for non-shipping purposes and that includes clients (so many of the ACD canon clients are female, after all!), minor characters, villains, whatever. What I don't like is when an author creates an OFC whose main purpose is to be a Watson replacement and/or Holmes' lover.

Ah, gotcha. I agree, in that case - my chief beef in fact with the Mary Russell series as mentioned above, and one reason I avoid it in fic like the plague myself (reading and writing both).
