The muffins I made to bring to game night tonight are sub-par but still edible. I feel greedy keeping them for myself when they're just fine but I also feel awkward bringing them when the usual reaction to my baking is for someone to take a bite and go "holy crap!". These are not holy-crap-worthy and it bugs me.

When did I become so vain about my baking, of all things?

I do the same thing! I don't think it's vanity exactly (though obviously I could be biased) I just want to do my best when it's cooking/baking for other people.

Yeah I definitely have higher standards when I'm baking for other people and not just for myself. I just want them to enjoy it so I can make them happy. I guess that's not vanity really.

Are you me?

I do this with all things now. It's a real problem.

Also, my standards are way too goddamn high, because even my subpar cooking is honestly still a lot of people's holy crap cooking (I realize that sounds arrogant, but that's what I've been told).

I've done this before too. One of my friends even commented before when I said something had come out perfectly that it's unusual for me to say that. There have been several times I was complaining that something didn't come out quite the way I wanted and the reaction was "what are you talking about?"

It's extremely irritating when you have a vision and what you made doesn't quite live up to it, though.

I don't think that's vain. Nothing wrong with taking pride in something you're talented with. Also nothing wrong with being disappointed if something doesn't turn out as well as you'd expected. (ALthough I'm sure they're delicious!)

They actually might turn out all right after all. The problem is I made them a day early and it was like the lemon juice in them settled weirdly overnight and they crossed the line from moist to damp. I tried putting them in the oven for a few minutes to try to dry them out a bit and that turned out better than I expected (I thought I might just make it worse but I had the idea and wanted to try it).
