You know what to do

Job Interview advice

(Anonymous) 2016-08-24 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I have a job interview tomorrow for a university tour guide position (I actually posted on here about it a few weeks back, I was the freakishly depressed anon, but I sucked it up and applied for the job), and I was told that part of the interview is giving an informal presentation, basically a persuasive thing on why people should come to my specific school for my major. A couple questions:

1. Just in general, do people have tips on informal presentations? I have a lot of experience giving formal presentations (I used to do a lot of debate), but I don't want to come across as too stiff or formal here.
2. How formally do you think I should dress? I usually wear a pencil skirt and blouse to interviews (which usually goes over well) but I am worried since the presentation is informal, they are expecting me to dress informally to. Would overdressing hurt my chances? If yes, what are good informal interview clothes?

I always do bullet points of the main points I want to make so that way I know what topics I want to cover and run less of a risk of going into something I'm not as prepared to talk about. And I practice a lot. I realize that seems counter intuitive, but the point is to be really familiar with your topic so that you can be informal about it.

For informal interview clothes, maybe work/dress pants and a cardigan?

Informal presentations are a lot like speed dating: keep it snappy, don't dress up too much (but don't look schlubby), smile a lot.

Basically you can just write down a few points and wing it if you're comfortable enough. It's acceptable to crack a few jokes and go for audience participation points to be more engaging, as well. Think more of a youtube video than a TED talk.

1. Make a list of points beforehand; really think through why people should come to your school for your major. Talk through it to yourself several times, and make it sound natural. Don't give yourself a script to memorize, though: the idea is just to think through the question and give a thoughtful, informed answer.

2. Business casual, probably. Always opt for the more formal option if you're picking clothes for a job interview. Pencil skirt and blouse sounds great!

I think it would be a good idea to avoid reading a script and be able to look like you're just talking about it off the cuff in a conversational manner. Presentations and lectures like that are always more interesting and engaging to me, regardless of how formal they are supposed to be, and it's the kind of presenting you're likely to give when leading a tour. As the other Anon said, however, you need to organize your thoughts well and practice a lot ahead of time so you can speak confidently and the information comes out smoothly.

I don't think a blouse and a pencil skirt would be overdressing necessarily, but if you would not be dressing that way when giving tours, you might try for a slightly dressier version of how you would dress to give a tour. Just make sure everything is clean and neat.

Many years ago, a few big life-changing things happened, all around the same time. I lost my job (in fact the whole organization went under), my family, my health, and basically just everything I cared about. So my boss offered me the job I have now, and I took it, because what else was left? It's a really good job, good pay, lots of power around the office, a lot of perks. Shitty medical coverage, but...that's life. The catch was that it involves doing a whole lot of shit that some people would probably consider morally iffy, at best, but honestly I didn't really care. So maybe I don't deserve advice at all, but whatever, I can deal with people hating me so I might as well try.

But recently one of my largest investments was sabotaged. I did some research and it turns out the guy behind it was actually a relative I thought was long gone. And not just a distant cousin or something, this was someone really important to me, and now everything I used to care about is flooding back and I'm not really sure what I'm doing with my life anymore, or what I'm supposed to do now. I want to reconnect with him, but he's really against what I do, and I'm actually thinking about quitting my job for him, but that'd piss off my boss, and he's really not a guy you want to piss off. As in, I would probably "disappear" and nobody would go poking around.

So...I have exactly one option. F!S, how do I get my son to turn to the dark side and help me overthrow the emperor and rule the galaxy?

Give in to fear and hate and anger....but remember, if you go down that path, forever it will dominate our destiny!

Try to get in contact with the OP of secret 8, they might have some tips.

If you seriously think quitting would get you hurt.... might want to get the police involved? I honestly don't know how that would work, so you might want to get a lawyer first. I think you need to get out of there. Because what happens if he learns your family member was the one who sabotaged you guys?

Sorry, you really only have one morally upstanding choice: you must die a heroic and redeeming death. Them's the breaks.

I love this comment

American Gods

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
I keep hearing about this show coming up. I've never read the books, but I'm interested in the show. But I'm thinking, should I read the books first or watch the show & then read the books?

I've read his writing style isn't for everyone. What do y'all say, fans?

I've read the book and I find Gaiman's writing style fairly accessible, nothing off-putting (except for one particular sex scene that's going to crop up in the show, so you're going to encounter it either way).

I'd be able to give you better advice if the show was airing and we had an idea of what it's like. Right now, read the books so you don't get spoiled while it's airing, I guess?

Re: American Gods

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
I started the book and couldn't get further than a chapter.

Re: American Gods

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, the good news is, it's only one book, although one of the characters also appears in a shorter (and more lighthearted) book, Anansi Boys. Basically, if you like dark takes on mythology (all kinds of mythology) and don't mind reading long books, go for it. You can always toss it across the room before you finish.

Re: American Gods

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
It's a single book, and it's not THAT long. It's mostly just a question of whether you can deal with Gaiman's prose style, which isn't really the best.

So... try and read the first chapter and see what you think?

Your library probably has it. Check and see. If you don't like it then you can return it.

I love that book, but it is dense. Give it a try, if ya don't like it just wait for the show and watch that because the story itself is cooool as fuck.

Re: American Gods

(Anonymous) 2016-08-25 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Well, nobody's writing style appeals to everyone. All you can do is give it a try and decide if it's for you. I will say that American Gods is more serious and dramatic, while Anansi Boys is more comedic, so if you dislike the former, the latter might still work for you. They're apples and oranges.

Medication stuff

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2016-08-25 12:47 am (UTC)(link)
So I learned I still have a ridiculous surplus of 150 mg synthroid pills which are like 15 or 25 mg below my proper dosage.

I've been taking them and my remaining 175s and I'm still somewhat low. Would it help boost my levels to take a couple of 150s every so often, at least until I could get myself checked and my prescription refilled?

Don't change your medication until consulting a doctor or pharmacist.
