But what about the possibility that reading those fics (or writing them) might be a way to work through the issue? What about adoption fics or fics about m/f couples who can't concieve or fics about couples who are happily childless? Sounds like you are depriving yourself of a way to potentially heal a little bit, OP.

That's very presumptuous of you.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 10:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not really. A lot of people use writing as a tool in that regard.

If this issue is so emotionally excruciating that it currently causes OP to avoid anything they associate with childbirth, it's probably not a good idea to wait for it to start impinging on other aspects of their life, you know? Like, for example, when people around them start having babies irl.

(frozen comment)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-05 10:52 pm (UTC)(link)
How do you know that's not already happening? How do you know they haven't tried that?

Like I said: presumptuous.

I tend to take things at face value when people say that they can't read romance lol

What I don't tend to presume is that they have tried things not traditionally considered romance, but that still falls under the umbrella of m/f. I'm going off exactly what the secret says here.

Now I'm not even sure what your point is anymore.

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
See my first comment.

Summarized: people often find writing useful for working through personal problems. OP may or may not wish to do this.

I really don't think this is a good thread for unsolicited advice, especially from someone who does not have a uterus.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Doesn't matter.

I also have never had skin cancer and can still tell you that many people find chemotherapy useful.

That is not even remotely a useful comparison.

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-06 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
It's an exact comparison.

It's literally my first comment. Many people find reading and writing fiction helps with deep personal issues.

It's not a directive or a value judgment, it's a statement of fact.

People go to a fucking oncologist when they have skin cancer. You can't even GET chemo without medical supervision. Like holy fucking shit, are you serious with this?

Are you a psychologist?

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 11:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Technically, yes. It's not what I do though.

[personal profile] dethtoll 2016-09-05 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Technically, yes" is not an answer. Do you have a license to practice?

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Loooool you realize that you are actually asking if I am a psychiatrist or a therapist right? "Psychologist" is not a term specific to clinicians.

The answer is still: I'm not giving out my job title on f!s. Never. No matter how indignant you are.

I have said probably six times by now that I won't give that information. Congratulations, you can kind of read.

[personal profile] diet_poison 2016-09-05 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
To be quite fair, you're not defining what you mean when you say "psychologist". You won't tell anyone what specifically you mean, for whatever reason, so you can't really expect people to take you seriously.

It's ok to not want to share personal information like what your job title is, but then you don't get to be adamant about being qualified to give advice on this or that. You can't have it both ways.

I take it from your above response that you're not actually a practicing psychologist (i.e. licensed therapist, counselor, or psychiatrist). So when you say "technically yes" do you mean you have a BS in psychology or something?

[personal profile] dethtoll 2016-09-05 11:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Emphasis on "BS" amirite?

(frozen comment)

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-09-05 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not practicing.

I could practice tomorrow if I decided to. I do NOT want to.

But that's totally beside the point since I didn't tell OP they should absolutely go start reading fiction. What I did say was that it is an avenue a lot of people use, that they might also find useful if they were to consider the breadth of available material.

Yep. What a terrible comment.

Sounds like you are depriving yourself of a way to potentially heal a little bit, OP.

That sounds pretty definitive to me. It sounds like you are casting a lot of judgment without really knowing the situation at all.

I'd be really pissed if I were in OP's shoes and some stranger made a comment like that to me - doubly so if it were a dude.

So do you have some kind of license?

Come on dude, no you couldn't. Registered psychologists require a doctoral degree and supervised practica in BC and assistants require a master's (http://www.collegeofpsychologists.bc.ca/rrp.php#registration). You're years away from being able to. I'm not giving away your job details or anything but that's just a straight up lie.

Not even that you're necessarily wrong or your advice is bad, but faking credentials is wack.

The thing is, I'm not even asking your job title. I'm asking if you have a license to practice. Because if you don't, then you're just playing armchair psychologist on the internet and giving bad advice to someone who didn't ask for it and probably doesn't want it, especially not from a dude, especially not from YOU with your history of mansplaining. And you know this, which is why you refuse to answer the question.
