Casual ableism
(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)Re: Casual ableism
I was gonna put this as a reply to the pet peeve/rants, but this is better--when people say "can you even read?" or use low reading comprehension as an insult I don't think they realize the inherent ableism there and it's gross.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)But I find it hard to be offended by someone sputtering something like that at a perfectly capable, literate person not paying attention or not reading something thoroughly when they should have.

Re: Casual ableism
I know the defense. They're not talking about my case. They're alluding to the stereotype of the guy who lives in his mom's basement, etc, etc. It still feels like a slap in the face.

Re: Casual ableism
In my case, my being a shut in & living with my parents was kind of enforced. I wanted desperately to learn things like driving and my parents just decided for me that I couldn't for a while. I had a mental breakdown and they decided again that I could never drive when they were considering letting me (and acted like it was my choice to break down). They would tell me to leave if I didn't like things and then come and find me acting like I snuck out.
In order to get out where I am now, I had to argue with my parents and put my foot down, telling them that I was going to find a way to leave one way or another.
I'm aware this is kind of a strange situation but, you really can't always know someone's circumstances through the internet. It's better to criticize someone for their current actions then to poke fun at something like them living at home.

Re: Casual ableism
the most insidious and common kind of ableism of all! see also: "what's your excuse?"
Re: Casual ableism
(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)Disabled people are people. It is true that dealing with a disabled person causes stress for people around them. but who wants to have it shoved in their face constantly that people around them must hate dealing with them
Especially by people who don't even KNOW their relatives or anything about their condition/situation.
Re: Casual ableism
People whose first reaction to hearing about a disabled person is to assume their parents/loved ones are miserable are nasty.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)That and the oversensitiveness (which is also exhausting) are a sure way to make legitimate complains to not be taken serious.
