I was gonna put this as a reply to the pet peeve/rants, but this is better--when people say "can you even read?" or use low reading comprehension as an insult I don't think they realize the inherent ableism there and it's gross.

Re: Casual ableism

Of course they don't. Most people don't take jokes or petty insults seriously. They have more important concerns in their life.

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I strongly suspect that there are jokes in the world that you would take seriously. I think this is true for, like, 99% of people in the world, and you're being a hypocrite.

What does bad reading comprehension have to do with ableism? Most people with bad reading comprehension don't have any disabilities, they're just stupid.

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Some of em do have learning disabilities, though. So

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's still acting like a real thing that a lot of people struggle with due to learning disabilities makes you a lesser person.

Using inability to read or read fluently as an insult is pretty transparently ableism.

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
why are you going out of your way to be an asshole

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-06 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's cool to make fun of people with legitimate reading or intellectual disabilities.

But I find it hard to be offended by someone sputtering something like that at a perfectly capable, literate person not paying attention or not reading something thoroughly when they should have.

Depends on context for me. If you're asking that of someone on a forum based predominantly on text or a text-based game where everything happens in written communication then a level of reading ability is assumed or else there'd be no way they'd be on the forum.

In a random, non-reading related context, I agree with you.

That's just really silly. Are you suggesting that dyslexic people just don't belong on the internet and should know their place if they dare to venture on ??

Or when you have an asshole making a comment about an article or forum topic. It is perfectly fine to questions their reading comprehension. Because sometimes it sucks.

What's been getting to me lately is people using "shut-in" as an insult. I've been there when my mental illnesses were at their worst and I don't need it rubbed in my face that people think I'm pathetic because of the worst period in my life. People who call out others for various -ist language have no problem saying this.

I know the defense. They're not talking about my case. They're alluding to the stereotype of the guy who lives in his mom's basement, etc, etc. It still feels like a slap in the face.

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
As a former "shut in" myself, I have some sympathy for what you're feeling, but that's not ableism.

I agree with this. Also , mocking people living with their parents.

In my case, my being a shut in & living with my parents was kind of enforced. I wanted desperately to learn things like driving and my parents just decided for me that I couldn't for a while. I had a mental breakdown and they decided again that I could never drive when they were considering letting me (and acted like it was my choice to break down). They would tell me to leave if I didn't like things and then come and find me acting like I snuck out.

In order to get out where I am now, I had to argue with my parents and put my foot down, telling them that I was going to find a way to leave one way or another.

I'm aware this is kind of a strange situation but, you really can't always know someone's circumstances through the internet. It's better to criticize someone for their current actions then to poke fun at something like them living at home.

Yes, and it's not just that. Like, what bothers me lately is I get a lot of things along the lines of "well *I* can do this, why can't you?"

Well, because I'm not you. Duh.

"well *I* can do this, why can't you?"

the most insidious and common kind of ableism of all! see also: "what's your excuse?"

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
The ableism that treats disabled people to their face like burdens people have to deal with and not people in their own right is the worst for me.

Disabled people are people. It is true that dealing with a disabled person causes stress for people around them. but who wants to have it shoved in their face constantly that people around them must hate dealing with them

Especially by people who don't even KNOW their relatives or anything about their condition/situation.

UGH THIS

People whose first reaction to hearing about a disabled person is to assume their parents/loved ones are miserable are nasty.

Re: Casual ableism

[personal profile] dani_phantasma 2016-09-07 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
I feel you here. I see this a lot in disability discussions and it sucks. Its why I flinch anytime autism is brought up on here.

Re: Casual ableism

(Anonymous) 2016-09-07 01:45 am (UTC)(link)
And yet, for some reason, the people complaining about it are rarely disabled themselves but feel the need to speak for others (because we can't speak for ourselves? Oh, God.).

That and the oversensitiveness (which is also exhausting) are a sure way to make legitimate complains to not be taken serious.
