It's Ilya Repin's "Ivan The Terrible And His Son Ivan":

Ah. Thank you. I meant to write the title on the secret. I can't believe I forgot.

Some people say that photography is the reason painters turned to abstraction. That with cameras around, there was no longer any point in trying to capture images realistically.

But actually, the real reason was that Ilya Repin came along and made all other representative artists obsolete.

It's dramatic and sad; I like it!

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
god, that's a piece of art....I can understand why it's the One for you

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that piece so much. This is depicting him after he killed his son in a fit of rage, right?

Just...the eyes, incredible.

Why can't you go to Russia, though? Even if you can't afford it now, maybe someday you will be able to...
And there are all sorts of more affordable options nowadays to cut down on travel costs.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Russia seems to be gearing up for a war. So, maybe I can go after they calm the hell down, but right now (and the near future) seems like a bad time.

TBH someone always gearing up for war, at it seems better now than after.

If OP is lgbt, I can why they wouldn't want to go.

I think Russia is a super intresting and a beautiful country, but their politics and laws are seriously disgusting and I wouldn't feel safe going imo.

Wouldn't visit Russia because I strongly dislike their government.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
Some of us are poor as shit, so that might be a reason.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Can't blame you for that. As evocative images go, it's a doozy. Ivan's shellshocked stare, realising what he's done ...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an amazing painting, OP. I recently saw my favorite painting in real life and it blew me away. I hope you'll be able to see your favorite one day.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-08 11:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Is there any reason you can't go to Russia?

I'm going to Russia in two weeks, OP, and will be visiting both the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Tretyakov in Moscow, so if I see this painting I will think of this secret and try to send you a psychic vision.

oh man, that is a great one, OP, I feel you. As powerful as it is to see a reproduction or even just to see it on a screen, actually being in front of the real thing must be incredible... but yeah, I can't imagine that one traveling.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes museums lend their artwork to other museums for traveling exhibitions. I don't know if that would happen with this particular piece but you can keep an eye out.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Earlier this year, the Tretyakov Gallery did an exchange with the UK National Portrait Gallery--26 Russian portraits from the 19th century, including Perov's one of Dostoyevsky, went to the NPG, which lent the Tretyakov a group of English portraits in return. The exhibit ran from March until June, and while it's been described as "unprecedented," that doesn't mean it couldn't be repeated.

Not a bad choice! I've never seen it (that I can remember) and I'm no art buff, but I can definitely see how it has emotional appeal just from the first glance.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 12:57 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, that is a beautiful work of art. I'm gonna look up more on this artist now, thanks OP.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-09 01:34 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed OP.
What an incredible piece of art!!!
