[The Neverending Story]

So, apparently he's yelling "Moon Child" in this scene?

I could never tell what he was saying when I was a kid. I asked my friends and they just shrugged, so I thought it was supposed to be unintelligible, like it's up to the audience to imagine the most beautiful name, because no matter what name they chose, some people would not think it all that great.

I'm honestly kind of disappointed that I don't get to make up my own ideal name, and also miffed that I went all these years without knowing he was saying an actual name we were supposed to understand.

At the same time, I think it's kind of funny because I imagine his mom was a total hippy whose real name was Doreen or Nancy Sue, but she called herself Moon Child and it stuck. Then Bastian, being a kid, thought that was the most awesome name ever and loved it unironically.

Even though "Moon Child" is the name in the book -- and is the name the actor is actually yelling -- I kind of think it's supposed to be unintelligible/mysterious in the movie.

Yes, he is, but I have no idea why you wouldn't understand this. It was perfectly clear to 4 year old me and I don't recall the actor having a particularly strong accent...

different people have trouble hearing different things. there's no mystery here.

Congratulations! You apparently have far superior hearing to literally everyone I know who has seen this movie because even when people know what's he's supposed to be yelling, most still can't make it out.

I remember not really catching it as a kid (probably cos I wouldn't have expected it to be two words) and thinking it was supposed to be ambiguous. Meh, no reason you can't still see it that way.

when I was a kid I thought he yelled MOON CHIVE

let me tell you... I was so confused
I figured he was trying to insult her for making him upset by saying she had onion breath or something

your mistake is cuter

I never understood what he was saying until I decided to look it up one day! I still don't really hear "Moon Child" when he yells.

I could never make it out.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-16 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
I always thought it was meant to be difficult/mysterious, because they don't mention it afterwards either.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
+1 for thinking it was meant to be unintelligible, and liking it that way.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
Never read the book, only half-watched the movie once as a kid, but I heard/understood it as "Moon Child" right away and didn't realize it was apparently hard to make out for a lot of people until years later.

Go fig.

Well you're lucky, and also not as smug about it as Herpy is upthread.

...well, there's something I never thought about looking up because I, too, though it was supposed to be unintelligible and not an actual name.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, it works so well artistically if you can't make it out. Wow, one time being hard of hearing actually added something to my life.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-17 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
oh, that's what he's yelling? wow, never got that, even after 30+ years.

As I mentioned in Herpy's sub-thread, that was not the only movie I could not understand lines until I heard them as an adult.

Though I only read Good Omens after I'd read the book of The Neverending Story, which means I at least got all the references in Pepper's full name.

Huh. I always thought he was yelling "Mariah," as that's an actual name women have. Never read the book, though.

poor Michael Ende, so many people who saw the movies he hated and never read the books

Ohhhhhhhh. OHHHHHHHH.

I couldn't make out most of what he was screaming tbh. Thank you for enlightening!

edit. Haha I watched the scene again. Still can't make it out as that. Just incomprehensible noise.

I had no idea that's what he was saying and I shall now choose to ignore it.

Echoing a lot of the comments here, I could never truly hear what he said either, even watching it now. But for some reason during my first and second watches, I swear I heard 'Rosalina'. A friend of mine swore she heard 'Samantha' and so we figured that it was supposed to be ambiguous (hence the cleverly placed thunder-clap/possible sound of exploding tree) so the viewer could insert whatever name they wanted.

Honestly I still like that idea myself that it was on purpose for that reason.
