[Great British Bake Off, Sue Perkins, Mel Giedroyc]

I honestly can't believe this is happening. :( It's a hugely popular show, the production company who makes it would be fools to let Mel and Sue go just because they want more money than the BBC offered.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Blame the Tories, they are the ones who said the BBC could not be allowed to own more than a fraction of a percent of their own programming. Bunch of dickheads.

I only watched a few episodes of this, but I loved those ladies. I really liked how they'd joke around with the contestants and gave the whole thing a more friendly, fun atmosphere, rather than intense competition (which I hate).

Aw, they're leaving? I didn't know that. :(

You know who the perfect replacement host would be? I've got it!

....
Jeremy Clarkson

WHY HAVEN'T YOU BAKED THAT PROPERLY? HONESTLY, A FAT AMERICAN COULD DO BETTER THAN THAT. HOW HARD CAN IT BE

Oh, god. Not Clarkson. Now James May? I think he'd actually be half decent at it--and he'd know a lot of the science behind it too.... tbh, I'd just like to see May on another tv program. lol

Yeah, me too. (Hey, he can cook! He did it on YouTube!) His commentary would be...unique for sure. :) (On YouTube, that involved describing his kitchen towels and telling the cat to fuck off.)

(Anonymous) 2016-09-20 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I would watch the hell out of that, tbh. He gets everything wrong and he's so shouty and blustery and he says the most hilariously ridiculous stuff.

Oh, I'd love watching him ON the show, but hosting? *shudder*

I keep on remembering I want to watch this, since everybody says it's so great. Is there a particular season I should try, or just start from the beginning?

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
Season 7 is particularly good, but really you can just start with any season.

Ok! I will start from the beginning, then :)

All the seasons are good and worth watching, though for the first couple seasons they have a slightly different format to the competition itself-- not in a bad way, just different. I think season 5 is particularly good and I believe it's on Netflix. Season 6 was also excellent. Not sure why someone recommended 7, because that one is only halfway through.

"Everyone" can be wrong. It's boring and trite and a waste of time.

I'll probably figure that out pretty quick, if that's the case :P

One of the best British shows ever? How about one of the best shows ever, period?

*sigh* Now how am I supposed to get my adorable cooking show fix for free across the pond? :[

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
It's not vanishing, it's just moving to another channel...

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
Please. British TV has much better to offer.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I don't blame the production company at all. The BBC can find £4.5million per episode for their failed reboot of Top Gear, but not £25million for the huge ratings hit GBBO with all it's merchandise spin offs and future potential?

Seriously, fuck the BBC.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
The BBC took the not unreasonable decision that a marquee in a field, no matter how well stocked, would not cost anything like £25million to produce. See here is the thing, the BBC is legally not allowed to consider how much money a show will bring in if it is not produced by the BBC itself but it is legally required not to spend much more than it costs to produce on buying shows from external production agencies. It is also legally required to only produce a small percentage of shows in-house and put the majority of its shows out to tender for external production companies to create.

Now if that sounds to you like a recipe for exactly this situation; where the BBC spends the time and money building up a brand only for the production company to drastically up the costs knowing it will still bring in a small fortune if it does but knowing the BBC cannot possibly match that bid as it legally cannot consider profit generation as part of the show's value and thus ensuring it will go to a commercial channel who are allowed to consider profit value where they will get the profit from the increased bid and the profit from the overseas residuals, well then; you are a Conservative Party Minister and you just worked out how to kill the BBC. Death by a thousand cuts, the BBC has to spend, spend, spend, but as soon as a show shows promise of going into the black then the production company can up and go taking all the sunk costs with it.

Top Gear by contrast is a very expensive show to make (with the insurance costs alone being eyewateringly large), even post Clarkson it is not a failure, and it was brought back in-house production wise (in fact they bought the brand back off Clarkson who had bought it off them in the first place during the first hiatus) which means they can take profitability into account.

Unlike a lot of people I'm fully prepared to give channel 4 a chance with GBBO. Everyone is doom & gloom predicting but channel 4 aren't going to drastically change what they've got. The show will be a little longer to account for adverts and there will be different hosts. I love Sue & Mel, but they're not the reason I'm watching.

(Anonymous) 2016-09-21 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Shorter to account for ad breaks. It'll have to drop between ten and fifteen minutes to fit into C4's hour with ads slot.

Er, just how is the show supposed to be longer? TV programs have to fit into certain times lots, which means they have to be a certain length. Changing the length of the show and interrupting it with commercial breaks will almost certainly alter the show's rhythm. Not having the two hosts is already a drastic change.

They're the same company that made Benefits Street, I don't think they're overly concerned with anything other than money.

Anyway this is exactly the Tory and Tory press way of doing things - make it impossible for a group to do what it does best, criticise when it's unable to do it any more and use that inability as a way to take away more resources.
