I'm not out on that one. But,that has more to do with me really disliking Sarah's (steph)parent using her as a free babysitter that with thinking she should have married Jareth.

I always get weirded out by the people who think Sarah's dad and stepmom were terrible for using her as a free babysitter. Didn't anyone else babysit their younger siblings? I thought it was great because I got to be in charge!

As I said in another comment: I think context matters.

I think that being stuck with a baby so your dad and his new wife can go on date night is quite different than babysitting an older, well-liked (full) sibling.

I'd be resentful, in any case (but bear in mind for me babysitting is something I won't even do for money).

My view might also be skewed because my boyfriend's sister was pretty much almost in he exact situation (my bf's dad had two young children with another woman) and she totally hates babies and was very resentful if asked to mind them, especially as she does not really like the girlfriend. It's one of the reasons she now lives with her mom permanently.

Personally, I'm fortunate as I have no younger siblings.

I babysat my younger sister all the time. I babysat others for pay, but I wouldn't have even thought to get paid for watching my sister. It's just what families do. Granted my sister wasn't as young as Sarah's brother, so that might change it a bit, but I still don't think it is awful that Sarah was asked to do this.

Full vs half vs step shouldn't matter. They are family. And I watched my sister all the time for my parents to go out for date nights. It's only a handful of hours; it wouldn't ever kill me. And part of being a family is doing things you might not care for, but which need to be done to have the family overall stay happy and healthy. I hated taking out the trash and washing dishes, and other chores like that, but I did them because that is what families do. Same with the babysitting.

And tbh, I hated babysitting my sister, as she has ADHD and was very much a brat when little. I still remember one time she threatened to jump off the second story deck if I didn't give her what she wanted. I still wouldn't have ever considered saying no when my parents told me to watch my sister. Even the two years I was in high school and had to watch her for a week by myself because my father had a business trip out of town and my mother went with him. I guess people just value their families differently and are raised differntly. Because I see nothing wrong with this.

I think I was a weird child because there were things you literally could not have me do. Like, you could punish me - but then I'd just take the punishment and refuse all the same the next time. Minding kids was one of them, though I must admit I never had a younger sibling.

Whereas I wouldn't have even considered saying no, and thus punishment wouldn't have been needed. (Even now I feel guilty if I conflict with family / don't live up to their expectations.) Different personalities!

Context matters, but I think one shouldn't forget the context that Sarah herself was being childish and self-centered. Her stepmother isn't a wicked stepmother, she's (justifiably) exasperated. Her line was "I ask you to babysit only if it won't interfere with your plans!" Her stepmother assumes that Sarah would tell her about any plans, but she never says that she has anything else going on.

Miscommunication, maybe, but Sarah also throws a temper tantrum about it. It's very typical teenage drama, and her experience in the Labyrinth helps her grow up a bit.

Yeah same, I babysat my sister, even when she was an infant. I didn't think anything of it. I'm part of the family, it's my job to pitch in too.

Exactly! It's just like any other job you do around the house, not for money but just because it is part of being a member of a family.
