No Man's Sky

Sooo, did anyone end up buying it? I was turned off by the $80 price tag and general wariness of Sean Murray.

Glad I did so.

Here's the latest gossip:

I'm not a lawyer, and if I was I wouldn't be a lawyer in the UK, but this just sounds ridiculous to me. Sometimes people are disappointed in things. It's not a crime.

Didn't buy or play it but I have been having a great time following the gossip.

The whole thing is just bewildering to me though. If they had just made a statement about being unable to implement some of the features in time for the release but they were working on it or something like that I think backlash would be way less.

Also not charging as much as they did.

I am very much enjoying the backlash and gossip without being involved (unlike with Fable 3, that I will hold a grudge against until the end of days). It does feel a bit onesided, like I wish the No Man's Sky "side" had more of a leg to stand on so they were not being so soundly...lashed against.

But, IMO, they don't really. So it's basically a verbal beatup negative review session I am enjoying watching.

Supposedly there's a few pockets of ppl defending NMS but I've only seen the tiniest, quickly dismissed fraction. So I think it's a token effort.

I bought it, was immediately bombarded with school, but the time I've put into it has been enjoyable. Granted, I was expecting an exploration game and that's what I got (right now I'm discovering the language of the civilization on my starter planet, while also trying to remember that I have to continually mine for resources that will keep all my gear working).

I mean, it's not an exciting game but I like being a space archeologist so.

I love explorations! But generally cannot handle constantly grinding for gear/food outside of a few specific games (The Long Dark made it bearable, somehow). I think I feel that the exploration aspects tend to be dampened by too much survival and I generally prefer the focus to be one or the other.

Another reason I hesitated, I was worried it'd be too...minecrafty.

Generally I think that pre-ordering any game these days is a dumb idea because every year has at least one notorious dud that over-promises and under-delivers: Aliens: Colonial Marines, Sim City, Mass Effect 3, Godus, Duke Nukem Forever.

But I don't think this suit really is a good one. AAA publishers have studios devoted to creating cinema-quality animated promo clips. Are we going to sue Blizzard for promotional videos using animation-quality models, rigs, and lighting that can't be rendered on consumer-grade hardware at any reasonable frame rate? If the promo doesn't say "actual game footage" I don't think it should be treated as a promise of actual game footage.

We don't speak about Aliens: Colonial Marines.

I believe they're also including a lot of interviews, up until a few months before release, where Sean was saying that specific things will be in the game? Or I'm just mixing it up with that one reddit list that meticulously listed all the clear promises and whether they were delivered or not...

Except that I got lucky, I cancelled my preorder the moment I realised I didn't get to play as Ripley. But I am still so SALTY.

I bought it, and I'm super into it. I get that the tech video shown at E3 was different than what the final product was, but that's true of like...90% of games.

It's fun to explore, I like mining, I like talking to aliens and learning their languages, I like finding ancient ruins, I like watching unusual animals running around...idk. I like it. I found an Eden planet (perfect weather, no hazards, plenty of flora and fauna, low sentinel activity), and I've honestly just been spending my time walking all over it taking pictures of stuff.

Plus I sort of roleplay into my character, which helps the immersion. In my head, the pilot has an extensive backstory and all that, and it's super fun to think about. There's a lot of room for your imagination to run wild, which I appreciate in a game.

Do you find there's much variety? It caught my attention when it was all "Realistic random animals interacting with their environment and each other" but it's sounding like...just random animals walkign around clipping through trees. And I'm mostly about random animals in this kind of exploration...but only if it is what was promised versus any other indie exploration...

Visually, yeah, lots of variety! Idk what a "realistic" animal AI should look like...they wander around, run from you if you approach (unless you feed them), or potentially treat you like a threat and attack you. I have seen a few fighting each other, though! I very much feel like they'd continue to live normally with or without my presence, which makes it feel "realistic" to me.
