I know how you feel about shippers making you hate something you'd probably not even pay much attention to otherwise. I got involved in the bleach fandom and IchiRuki did that to me. It sucks because even though a majority of the fans are sane, those few loud ones make it so you flinch every time the ship is brought up.

I hate how the ship I love seems to have some of the worst loud fans (in the fandom I'm not really in, but still) that make people hate the fandom. :/ IchiRuki, Zutara, and maybe Ronmione though I think both sides of that were bad, and it seems the side that doesn't get made canon can also get bitter as it's becoming clear their ship will not "win".

I know that pain all too well. In the TFP fandom it was the Knock Out x Starscream shippers that did it to me. (To the point that it's like "STARSCREAM IS THE ONLY ONE I WON'T SHIP WITH KNOCK OUT")

And then there's the NCIS fandom where I avoid the Tony/McGee shippers and a good majority of Tiva shippers.

Ok, first of all, death threats? ugh, people suck.

Second of all...death threats to the VAs? What is that supposed to accomplish? Since when do VAs decide what ships will be canon?

It's because a couple of the VAs are pretty obviously not "into" Klance tbh. And one person involved with the show (animator or director? Not sure) made a graphic on tumblr where Shiro was looking into the direction of the viewer with a smile, and underneath it they wrote "Shiro loves ya baby", and in the tags they tagged something like #he's looking at Keith or something like that. (Here I found it: http://chrispalmerart.tumblr.com/post/146348772587/shiro-loves-you-baby) I get the feeling that the more fandom-inclined people on the show are generally either ambivalent about Klance or they're not into it, and that has made Klancers double their efforts to basically make the VAs and stuff shame people into Sheith or any Shiro/paladin ship. It got worse when Shiro's VA was like "it's really not cool to be bullying people over ships" and said a few other things I forget because this fandom gives me a giant migraine and I can only take small doses.

It got to the point where a Klancer made a hilarious PSA about how they should totally keep urging the VAs to shame Anybody Not Into Klance (which is kind of what it breaks down too really, some Hunk/Lance shippers have gotten hate even if they don't ship Sheith because apparently they're just trying to "pair the spares" and "being racist" even though Hunk/Lance is like a rainbow of diversity points compared to Klance which basically hit all the usual Two Skinny Pretty Boys Who Fight A Lot tropes), but when it became obvious that the VAs aren't into this kind of bullshit they amend it with "but remember the people involved in the show are human too and you can't expect them all to Do The Right Thing". It was much longer and wordier and stupidly hypocritical, missing the point by a mile...but that's pretty usual for this fandom.

This fandom mystifies me to be honest. One ship has managed to turn it from a cool fandom with people who rarely fought into literal fandom cancer in a mind blowingly short amount of time.

Because only one person on the internet dislikes Klance shippers. /eyeroll

The Voltron fandom keeps getting more and and more terrible with each week and it's thanks in majority to Klance shippers. Just a few days ago there was that whole drama with artists being put on a list of "toxic blogs" for drawing The Bad Ships or for drawing someone with skin one shade too light. Now Sheith shippers are getting actual child porn sent to them. There is no way to prove whether the CP was sent to them by antis or if the claims are true at all, but one thing is certain – there is a shit-ton of negativity spread in the fandom, mostly by antis, and like 90% of the antis are Klance shippers. It's really no wonder people are starting to associate the ship and shippers with nasty things. I see people even outside of the fandom, who have never seen a single episode of Voltron, talk about all the ugly stuff that's going on.

To be honest, I think everyone is insufferable in this fandom regardless of their shipping preference...

Hunk/Lance is okay, but I really like Hunk/Keith. I hope I get to see more bonding with them in S2. I feel like I gravitate toward ships where a guy becomes friends with his best friend's rival even though they tend to be extremely unpopular (like Jearmin lol).
