I don't lie anymore; I tell people anime is the reason I became interested in Japan and made Japanese and Asian Studies my major. No one's acted like it was weird or bad (and if they thought so secretly, they did a good job of keeping it secret).

boy have times changed. Is being a weeaboo problematic nowadays?

But there's actually nothing wrong with having a piece of media serve to ignite interest in a culture. Though I feel you, I study Japanese literature, and I kind of struggle with the fact that I'm an anime fan. Maybe that's partly why I'm so resistant to writing any papers about anime/manga...

Being a weeaboo has always been problematic. Weeaboos are pathetic.

Rude tbh

I love that apparently being fans of something is okay UNLESS it's anime/manga. Then you get a special term and you're pathetic.

I first got interested in European geography and the history and culture of eastern Europe because of hetalia, but that doesn't negate the interest or make the knowledge I've gained by studying those topics less worthwhile. Your interest in Japan isn't less valuable just because the first exposure to it that really resonated with you happened to be a weird ass animated film instead of, idk, befriending a geisha.

There are worse reasons to do something, especially if you ended up loving what you do.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-10-20 11:13 pm (UTC)(link)
You're just a weeaboo.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-21 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I can't tell if this is sarcasm or ignorance.

Neutral.

Only if they're an ignorant idiot about Japanese culture and presume it's just like anime.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2016-10-21 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I know. I call myself a weeb all the time, I'm not ignorant about Japan, but I like the country and anime a lot, so I just go by that regardless of ignorance, but mostly in more of a kindred spirit kind of way.

Are there really a lot of people who will tell you you're racist for wanting to learn a language because you enjoy media originally made in that language? I'm not going to claim it's never happened because this is the internet, but I have a hard time believing it's a widespread problem.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-20 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Dumb SJWs are the only ones. But OP should ignore them. I saw a SJW some weeks ago saying that sexualizing Asian characters is racism. Not sexualizing them because they are Asian or sexualizing their Asian features, which would be pretty gross and creepy. The mere act of sexualizing someone who happens to be Asian was racism according to this person.

I've seen multiple people accuse white people of learning another language (for any reason, not just because you like the media) for cultural appropriation and that they should keep their distance from POCs. You know you've taken a wrong turn in life when your SJW tumblr is indistinguishable from Stormfront.

It's not "PC culture" that made you decide to be dishonest with people in your life about your interests. It's your own insecurity. But I'm glad it worked out for you!

OP, chill out. :/ A lot of people decided to learn Japanese because they watched anime! Most people aren't going to attack you for that, for pity's sake! If anything, I'd say those of us who have never learned a second language are more likely to admire your dedication. (Seriously, that's NOT an easy language to learn.) You really can say stuff on the internet without "everyone" jumping on you.

Of course, you don't HAVE to, either...

AKIRA!

(Anonymous) 2016-10-20 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I do occasionally ponder the irony of how if it were any other country I consumed as much culture from as I do from Japan, I'd long since have learned the language.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-21 01:50 am (UTC)(link)
Unless you decide to ask for their opinions, it's not really anyone's business what you choose to do with your life.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-21 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
I'm very distracted by the Akira pic.

Like, I haven't seen this movie in years. All I remember is the shirt tearing/boobie reveal and when his poor sister gets smooshed like a grape and the biiike.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-21 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Of all the animes, though, Akira is one of the ones considered more "serious" and ... deeply tied to? representative of? a certain era of Japanese zeitgeist, so you could make an argument back that being interested in Akira is a reasonable source of interest in Japanese language and culture.

(Personally I feel like as long as you approach a new culture with respect and an open mind rather than treating it as a new shiny toy, it doesn't matter as much where the interest came from.)
