Re: Fic trends in fandom

In my OTP fandom, there are two extremes: abusive fics or extremely fluffy and/or angsty fics. I tend to see the pairing as not abusive, but they are still villains so I try to mix up the tones a bit in my fics and show they are nice and fluffy with each other but still horrible with everyone else. There don't seem to be too many other authors that do that. Most of the people who see the ship the way I do seem content to just deal with the fluffy stuff and ignore the dark lord stuff. Which I don't mind, but I enjoy mixing it up in my own stuff.

Modern AUs seem more prevalent in the Hobbit fandom, though there is also quite a bit that I've seen in the Silmarillion fandom. Personally I don't get the point because if your fandom is set in another world, isn't that part of the fun of it? Why make it mundane and ordinary? But they do seem popular. Especially reincarnation AUs in the Hobbit fandom.

I see this in the fandom that I've recently toed into as well. But in this case the pairing would likely be abusive or suffer a huge power imbalance.

Well, there are power imbalances in my OTP because one is the main dark lord and the other his second in command. But it is all in how you interpret it. Some people intrepret it as an absusive relationship where the second just does what he is told. But from my understanding of his character, I see him as completely arrogant and while he serves his master he says what he thinks and is as close to an equal as possible. And they are so similar in their darkness that I think they could be in love with each other and only show their good sides with each other.

That, to me, is a large part of what makes them interesting. Two awful people who want to conquer, rule, torture, and destroy everything and yet are still capable of love for each other.

I did like reincarnation AUs when I was actively reading in the fandom, they made modern AUs feel at least a little connected to the canon story.

I guess it just doesn't quite fit with Tolkien for me unless it is only elves? A reincarnation AU where elves were back on Earth for some reason rather than in Valinor I could get behind. And I like the idea of Modern AUs where the characters are still Middle Earth races. Like, modern technology, just with elves and dwarves and ainur and hobbits. But straight up Modern AUs or Reincarnation AUs with dwarves and hobbits (which is what I usually see) don't seem to work for me.
