Fic trends in fandom

(Anonymous) 2016-10-20 11:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Are there any fic trends that you've noticed seem to be especially prevalent in certain fandoms? Are you a fan of said trends or do you hate them?

Example: gender bending happens in just about every fandom, but there was (is?) a TON of it in the Hobbit fandom. So much fem!bilbo, my god. It was so prevalent on the kink meme, that many prompters would preemptively add "no female bilbo please" to their prompts because there was about a 50% chance that someone would be like "can I fill this with girl!bilbo?" otherwise

My secret guilty, guilty pleasure is sports rpf. Especially sports I don't follow very closely, like hockey. But there is a shocking about of werewolf AUs. I don't get it. Is it just a narrative reasoning for ABO dynamics, because the two often seem to go hand-in-hand, or what? Werewolves. Everywhere.

This makes sense to me as someone who's into monster rape het. Writers probably feel like they're distancing themselves from squicky real life elements by adding a supernatural spin. Especially if they're writing something with consent issues.

Hockey fic has seems to have an unusual number of magic AUs in general. I also don't follow hockey and in my mind the NHL is a magical place.

Yeah, female Bilbo is everywhere.

Some recent ones would be ageplay fics in the Avengers fandom. There isn't a huge amount but way more than I used to see.

Obviously, ABO goes in and out in favor in many fandoms. I see it the most in Teen Wolf (for obvious reasons).

I like seeing fandom migrations. Like when a lot of Supernatural fans shifted to Teen Wolf when it came out. So a lot of SPN tropes moved there. Not sure where that have migrated since.

"nonsexual infantilism" in MCU fic

The "nonsexual" seems like a............fairly flexible designation

it seems like there's more trans fic in the overwatch fandom than I tend to see in other fandoms. I've seen a lot of prompts on the kink meme where the OP will say "bonus points for trans![character]" when the rest of the prompt doesn't have anything to do at all with a character being trans. it doesn't bother me or anything, but I do kind of wonder why there's so much of it in this fandom specifically. is there just a higher concentration of trans fans in the overwatch fandom (assuming that trans people are posting some or most of the prompts, which they might not be idk)?

Nah, Overwatch is just super popular on tumblr where trans is the new hot fetish.

I hear you about the Hobbit fandom.

I've noticed in the MCU fandoms, if people have a favourite character they tend to pop up in other places and movie fandoms at random to be paired off with whoever is single.

I'm struggling to think of other examples right now.

That second one is in most fandoms.

There was a TON of Genderbend in the New Star Trek'verse, especially after the first movie. And there was a surprisingly big Genderbend presence in the Watchman fandom.

Also, Zombies was a big thing in the Big Bang Theory fandom, back when I was big into it. There was some really good fics from the Sheldon/Penny people.

I like those tropes, but they kind of depend on the fandom, for me. If there's a TON of one gender over another, I'm fine with some Genderbending. If it's a non-fantasy/sci-fi type fandom, then i LOVE things like Apocalypse tropes and such.

huh, now that you mention it, I do remember a ton of fem!rorschach in that fandom (some fem!dan too, but mostly fem!rorscach if iirc). I didn't read too much of it, but I did appreciate it when authors had fem!rorscach be as ugly as regular rorschach instead of making her a knock out just because the character was genderbent. there were some fics that had fem!rorschach be stupid hot and it always made me lol

They did the same with Dan as well. He was always written as a larger girl. And I always appreciated that.

Trans!headcanons have been virtually non-existent in my manshooter fandoms thus far but now that I'm actually into MGS fic I've seen them crop up here and there. Only they are always the same characters, always the same way:

Liquid is mtf forced to live a lie (does this mean Big Boss's recessive genes are like that?). Revolver Ocelot is ftm who passes perfectly (and pulled this off in the Russian spetsnaz, somehow????)

I don't really give a shit about trans!headcanons, I'm just surprised by how uncreative and repetitive people are about them. Like if I was going to self-insert by giving someone my birth sex it would be fucking Big Boss or Solid Snake or something.

Hobbit fandom is full of these. Fem!Bilbo is one, as is genderswapping random and assorted dwarves. The popularity of that one sort of makes sense since otherwise The Hobbit's a sausage fest even by Tolkien standards.

Then there's the "Hobbits Fade if they're spurned by their One True Love" thing, which is widespread enough that some people probably think it's canon.

And the "Secretly a Ninja!" Bilbo stories where either hobbits in general or Bilbo specifically has all these secret survival skills and is basically a cross between Bear Grylls and Black Widow.

And the "Bilbo secretly has the most tragic backstory of anyone in Middle Earth" stories...

Most of these tropes can be written well, but are massively overdone at this point.

In my OTP fandom, there are two extremes: abusive fics or extremely fluffy and/or angsty fics. I tend to see the pairing as not abusive, but they are still villains so I try to mix up the tones a bit in my fics and show they are nice and fluffy with each other but still horrible with everyone else. There don't seem to be too many other authors that do that. Most of the people who see the ship the way I do seem content to just deal with the fluffy stuff and ignore the dark lord stuff. Which I don't mind, but I enjoy mixing it up in my own stuff.

Modern AUs seem more prevalent in the Hobbit fandom, though there is also quite a bit that I've seen in the Silmarillion fandom. Personally I don't get the point because if your fandom is set in another world, isn't that part of the fun of it? Why make it mundane and ordinary? But they do seem popular. Especially reincarnation AUs in the Hobbit fandom.

I see this in the fandom that I've recently toed into as well. But in this case the pairing would likely be abusive or suffer a huge power imbalance.

Well, there are power imbalances in my OTP because one is the main dark lord and the other his second in command. But it is all in how you interpret it. Some people intrepret it as an absusive relationship where the second just does what he is told. But from my understanding of his character, I see him as completely arrogant and while he serves his master he says what he thinks and is as close to an equal as possible. And they are so similar in their darkness that I think they could be in love with each other and only show their good sides with each other.

That, to me, is a large part of what makes them interesting. Two awful people who want to conquer, rule, torture, and destroy everything and yet are still capable of love for each other.

I did like reincarnation AUs when I was actively reading in the fandom, they made modern AUs feel at least a little connected to the canon story.

I guess it just doesn't quite fit with Tolkien for me unless it is only elves? A reincarnation AU where elves were back on Earth for some reason rather than in Valinor I could get behind. And I like the idea of Modern AUs where the characters are still Middle Earth races. Like, modern technology, just with elves and dwarves and ainur and hobbits. But straight up Modern AUs or Reincarnation AUs with dwarves and hobbits (which is what I usually see) don't seem to work for me.

Maybe it's just because it's tiny so I'm noticing it, but my current fandom seems to have an unusual amount of self-harm themed fic.
