Inspired by #1
(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)What's the best, if any? Are there any good systems besides name/name?
Re: Inspired by #1
I also like Avengers ones. They are not used as much but I thought it was great to use a the same word to be used in any combo. So FrostIron, Thunderfrost, IronShield, etc.
I hated Yu-Gi-Oh ship names. There were too many. Just...wayyy too many.

(Anonymous) 2016-10-31 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)Portmanteau:
Pros - often unique and easy to search.
Cons - Often look and sound stupid.
Fights over the proper spelling.
Pairing Nicknames (Stormpilot, Stark Spangled Banner)-
Pros - More appealing
Cons - More confusing
May conflict with other fandoms if you pick something common like ___ Husbands
Name/Name -
Pros - Easy to understand. Matter of fact and not cutesy or dumb looking.
Cons - Risk of / messing up search or formatting or just whatever problems programming has with it.
Fights over NameA/NameB vs. NameB/NameA

Re: Inspired by #1
The best ones to me are ones that either mix the two names together, or have a nickname that even casual fans can get, like Puppies/Puppylove for Sirius and Remus, or Snarry.

Re: Inspired by #1
Descriptive pairing names (like the abovementioned Pumpkin Pie) I find make no sense half the time, and the other half they're genius. I want to give a medal to whoever came up with calling Tony/Steve/Bruce "Stark Spangled Banner".
_____shipping names are just silly.

a) 99.999% of the time people write Snake/Otacon so it's kind of confusing
b) It's based on the Japanese transliteration of "snake" which is even more confusing when you're first wandering into the fandom
S/S, S/K, etc., from X/1999 are also terrible because there are multiple characters with names that start with both S and K. I mean you probably mean Subaru/Kamui, right, but what if you're writing Seishirou/Kotori?

Re: Inspired by #1
The ones that I think are the worst are the ones that just smush the names. Those just seem lazy to me.

Ultimately I'd prefer it if tumblr's tagging system would allow for the / between names so I can just tag character/character as I've always done but if I'm making fanwork I'll just use the name-smush since it's easier(reblogged posts I tend to go with characterxcharacter instead).
Re: Inspired by #1
(Anonymous) 2016-11-01 01:07 am (UTC)(link)I dislike portmanteaus that make up an existing word because, again it makes searching for your ship harder.
As for specific names I hated, I always disliked the name for Fury/Coulson which was 'Shield Daddies'. Ugh. I get it they're older, and they're in SHIELD and Coulson can act a bit paternal to his people sometimes, but Fury? And it just sounded weird. But Shield Husbands was already taken and no one wanted to come up with anything new or sth? Even though in the comics those characters were fairly young and not that high up in SHIELD so the name didn't even make sense.

Name/Name systems, no matter what the symbol in the middle and whether topping priority applies, are totally clear, but can I say a bit boring?
I like portmanteaus can be amusing if they end up adding up into something that sounds funny - like Vethica said, ones like Snotacon and Clotiris, plus can I mention Supin, who sounds like Snoopy's chocolate addict British cousin? They're fun, sometimes.
The descriptive ones, as I have said, can get very obscure if they reference things that are more linked to fanfic and fandom incidents rather than just referencing canon details.
