Why are so many conservatives so anti-environmental? It seems like political conservatism goes hand-in-hand with being an anti-environmentalist. Even when the science is completely undisputed, eg leadshot for game and fishing, and completely settled, conservatives will try and fight against the environmental option. Even when it is more costly to take the anti-environmental path, even when it causes problems for them personally, they still refuse to do anything that might help the natural world? I just do not understand it. I really do not. Does anyone on F!S have thoughts?

Because Conservative politicians have tied to big business including big oil. Because ordinary conservatives buy into the lies that are spread by conservative politicians about the environment and about scientists. Probably a lot of other reasons, but those are the two big ones.

I think there's an ingrained perception that green is always more expensive -- which historically it often was. Some people just don't want to hear that technologies have improved and processes have become more efficient and thus more cost effective. Even when you point out that upgrading to eco-friendly processes can be a tax writeoff if it imvolves a capital expense ( which it often does) they STILL don't want to adjust their thinking.

I also think it's a knee-jerk "circle the wagons!" mentality against every plank. "Yeah, once you start agreeing with the tree-huggers, next thing you know you'll be agreeing to let wimmin in th' army and hamasexuls get married and molest kids, and have to burn all the Dixie flags!"

The Venn diagram of "Conservatism" means that different kinds of conservatives oppose environmentalism for different reason.

For instance, the libertarians oppose national parks because they don't think the government should own property, the big business conservatives oppose environmental regulations because it would cut into profits, the evangelicals think that taking care of the Earth is a waste because Jesus is coming back Real Soon Now, and the anti-intellectuals automatically assume that if there is a scientific consensus, it's really just a Liberal Plot to Destroy America (TM).

Despite being so obnoxiously pro-family they're very happy to push off silving problems to the next generation (or the next generation's kids) if it means that their profits NOW might be affected.

IDK about the non-Evangelical ones, but a lot of Evangelical Christians think that the Earth's resources exist to be used to the maximum by humans, because otherwise why would God have put them there? And also they don't think it's a big deal if we deplete these resources, because by the time that happens the apocalypse will have started and everyone will have left Earth and gone to either heaven or hell, so it doesn't matter anyway.

It's not logical, but religious fundamentalism rarely is.

My opinion of politics at the moment is that it's fueled by resentment and packed full of mis-truth and stereotyping.

Some right wingers my hold ideas that are typically seen as "Anti-Environment", although I doubt they actually are anti-environment. Like they're filling up the gas guzzler and being all "FUCK YOU MOTHER EARTH" Probably just not worrying about the things the hard core environmentalists care about. I doubt there's much spite in their environmental choices. Ignorance at worst.

But that's what goes for the people who do hold typically "anti-environmental" opinions. I'm inclined to believe that there is this stereotype of the "average conservative" that is, well, white rich, misogynistic, racist, anti environmental, anti vegans, anti... Well, you know, George and Lucile Bluth basically. and people believe that stereotype, and when they see a conservative who is like that they go "See, All these rich pieces of shit I hate them so much" and they spread it and the stereotype goes on. And people buy into this so much when they see someone not like that you get the "Oh, they're not really conservative" or "Oh, they're only pretending to care, it's for their image" or "None of that matters they still believe *horrible shit you believe they must believe*"

Or they see someone say "Fuck the earth, Global warming isn't a myth but fuck it, let's fuck this planet up anyway" and they assume they must be a conservative.

Then there's the people who seem to genuinely not want to listen when it comes to environmental issues. and I do think that more often than not they are of the conservative type, I may just be being bais there, but I do think that comes more as a backlash to perceiving them being lectured to by people just trying to score points off them.

I know the contrary thrill of responding to being told "If you don't believe this like I do, you're scum!" with "I don't believe that. Fuck you, do your worst". It's a fucking thrill. As a reaction it's not the most enlightened call but I think that in politics right now the urge to go "Fuck you, I don't have to think like you" to your opponent is winning out over rationality and discussion. but I do not think it is limited to the right.
