Yuri on Ice

Potential spoilers for episode 10 after this point.

Episode 10 was adorable. I can't get over it that parts of the fandom, myself among them, was right with the semi serious prediction of what the "round and golden" item would turn out to be.

Silly question but how/where do I watch this show? My tumblr dash has finally made me curious enough to want to check it out. I've never actually watched any kind of anime before.

I usually watch it on kissanmie or anilinkz. I'm not quite sure if it's on crunchyroll as well.

I'm just really interested in what the nay-sayers come up with now to deny the relationship.
I'm guessing it'll be something like "Oh but Yuri said it was a good luck charm, so it's not really what it looks like!".

I am still expecting the mood to do a 180, just because I don't really trust anime anymore.

Man, it's so weird, I ship Viktuuri, love their dynamics, fell in love when Yuuri said all he wanted to do if he won Onsen on Ice was to eat katsudon with Viktor.

But like, ever since episode 7 my brain keeps trying to find loopholes in all the canon evidence we're getting. I'm having the same reaction as what you are describing : what if it was really a good luck charm? Even though the actual canon is constantly beating my head so that their canonical romantic relationship goes through my thick af skull.

I really really wanna believe, and I should believe, and it should make me happy but I can't, idk but I know it's driving me up the fucking wall.

You know, I actually have a bit of this as well. It's just ... too good to be true, I guess, and anime have a kind of terrible track record with going pretty far with their fujoshi fanservice just to pull back at the very last second.
I think what makes me more hopefully that they'll actually follow through this time is some of the comments one of the writers made on twitter and that it would take some mighty creative loops to jump through to actually no-homo the situation now.

I'm pessimistic. They wouldn't go so far with the """"plausible deniability"""" of it if they didn't want to have that out. It's so crazy, but I have no other explanation for it.

I think the thing they'll always be able to fall back to is Yuri's speech about how his kind of love isn't as clear-cut as romantic or platonic love so in the end, even if it looks like romance, they can always pull the "yes but it's not ~really~ romantic love" card.

Except that Viktor literally said it was an engagement ring and that they would get married after the competition?

God knows I get where the pessimism is coming from, after the number of shows that don't quite commit to that queer couple, but I don't see how there's any "plausible deniability" left at this point.

Masayoshi literally proposed marriage to Goto at the end of Samurai Flamenco, and went so far as to say that he'll "do everything your girlfriend would have", and the director weaselled out of that.
Unless they are *actually married* or state that they are *actually dating*, there is plausible deniability.

To be honest, I'm still finding it weird as hell. Because everything they're *showing* is 100% romance, but what they're saying... isn't nearly as much. It's so fucking weird for me. And then you had Yuri's reaction, and like...
It's not really possible to see them as not-gay, I think, but I have no idea what the show is even doing.

Yes, more or less. It's kind of a weird disconnect. But then again, I think the situation wouldn't be nearly as ????? If one of them was a female character. So while I'm not 100% sold on the whole romance (I'm just too cynical for it) I really WANT to believe.

I don't even know anymore. Like I said, on one hand they're telegraphing it really hard and you could say Yuri's just being awkward about it or something? I mean Phichit definitely said what everybody was thinking. It's just... they're not backing it up with any real private moments that reinforce it. I have no idea what is going on.

I think one of the problems I have with it (and the reason I was among the "no way the preview last week is supposed to be about rings!" group) is that they don't actually know each other that long? And as you said, next to the skating and all the focus on the other side characters, the few personal moments between those two are kind of few and far between.

Re: Yuri on Ice

(Anonymous) 2016-12-08 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
They're saying Yuuri is still fully into the "coach-and-skater" mindset and he isn't thinking about Victor romantically.

Because buying weeding rings, exchanging them at a Cathedral and not denying anything when Victor calls them engagement rings means not being romantically interested in Victor. Sense, they make none.

Re: Yuri on Ice

(Anonymous) 2016-12-08 03:14 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, on one hand, it's like how the fuck can you not take this seriously, and pretend it's a bromance? On the other hand... anime. I've seen this play out (or rather, not play out) before. But in all fairness, anime tends to not need clear-cut answers to relationships or storylines in general, and I usually appreciate that quality. It's allowed mainstream shows to portray relationships that are basically queer, if not "canon", long before it would've been socially acceptable to do so, certainly in any children's/YA series. But it's to the point in the millennium, even in Japan, where we have to start seeing more canon gay relationships that aren't reduced to a yaoi sub-genre.

So point being, for every fan that says "nooo it's just the normal anime male bromance, they just talk about skating, it's platonic" etc., in all fairness, anime pulls suggestive-but-not-canon gay romance all the time. I'd be disappointed, if not entirely surprised, if Yuri on Ice backtracked and didn't go anywhere from here. But still, the show is pretty clearly a romance. There has been kissing, feelings, erotic dancing dedicated from one male character to another, literal ring exchanging, and of course lots of male sexuality and nakedness. Unless you're watching with one eye open or are convinced that no anime that isn't blatantly yaoi genre could possibly feature a gay relationship, then Yuri and Victor are clearly a couple. I hope the anime sees it through to the end. At this point, there would be no reason for them to go any other direction.

Re: Yuri on Ice

[personal profile] fishnchips 2016-12-08 08:18 am (UTC)(link)
The main reason why I want to believe it is because one of the authors basically complained on twitter that basically, even if she writes male/male romantic relationships as obviously as possible, people still accuse her of pandering. While it wasn't exactly in connection to YoI, it was apparently during the production process of the show and difficult to misinterpret as unrelated.

Holy fuck they're engaged!!! Man how will they no homo their way out of this one (both the anime, and the "it's only queerbaiting/they're friends" fans)? Though it was my favorite that everyone assumed they were engaged, and just started applauding. The Thai boy is so cute, super glad he's back.

Seriously, episode 10 was all kinds of amazing, especially the credits scenes.
