Well, I can agree with you on one point: I think some of the fanfictions out there are insulting to the original work, intended or not - When people write character-bashing fics, when most of a fandom takes a beautiful story only to make it all about teh secks in the fanfic, and those fanfics that are horribly out of character and/or are unreadable for all the chatspeak, spelling errors and lack of respect for grammar...

HOWEVER, as a fanfic writer and as a reader who can find just what she likes when she looks for it -- I'd say that you just aren't finding the right fanfiction. Most of what human beings produce is crap, but the crap shouldn't condemn the good, which *does* exist. Fic writing can be good practice for the "real stuff," too.

And, in the end, even the crap-producers have the right to their fantasies and as long as the original creators don't care or aren't looking, why not let folks have their fun? I see fanfic as writing practice and also as something of a form of public-posted daydreaming. You don't have to look in on other people's dreams if you do not want to. Back buttons are wonderful.

07. You've read the badfic, haven't you.

Fanfiction is writing original stories with unoriginal characters. It is a lot, a lot, of wishing, but some wishes end up being exquisite. And also, most people never mean harm by writing fic, even if the fic contains such. Besides, some characters just won't go that extra mile and make out on screen, so someone has to do it for them. Think of it as playing with Barbies while studiously avoiding getting in trouble and facing Barbie's attorneys.

I'm a Barbie girl, in a Barbie world. You can brush my hair, and maybe touch me there.

46 - I always thought the anime blogosphere and LJers to be pretty different, so I'm not surprised it has far less popularity here. Of my flist, the majority enjoys (or has enjoyed) anime in some form, but I think maybe only two or three have seen 1~all of Higurashi, Nanoha, Lucky Star and such, and that's mainly because we watch shows from all sorts of genres, whether we hate it or not (because we like pain).

From the way your friends reacted, I'm more surprised you didn't catch on before that they probably wouldn't like those shows.

1. Yes, some people do. Thank you for leaving it simple and not listing the billions of ways they're "bad, stupid, horrible, and boring." I'm tired of listening to people whinging about all that, but I can respect your opinion here.

Me, I like writing fic about fairly flawed stories. X-men, Harry Potter, that sort of thing. I like character introspection. The point of some fic is just to be self-indulgent wishful thinking. But there's plenty of fic that offers a better built-up version of a character than the glimpse given in canon. There's some that are better written than canon. And here's the big secret, pal--it's for fun. OH NOES, IT INSULTS THE SOURCE MATERIAL.
Did you go out and play Power Rangers, TMNT, Star Trek, or whatever your childhood show was when you were a kid? INSULTING! What about fanart? Does that "insult the source material" as well? Really? All the time?
Yeah, nice high horse.
Y'know, there's something about trolls...it's fun to fuss at someone you don't care about.


09. Oh bless, that's sweet! I have no idea who they are (but I like the art and may have to check it out), but darn it, that's pretty cute. Sadly, Marvel broke up Scott/Jean and Peter/Mary, so honestly, there's no such thing as a stable relationship. For most folks, every few months, someone stands up and shouts "CHANGE PLACES!" and they all play musical chairs with each other's partners.

Not a troll; it's telling that "troll" is called when someone disagrees with you and you can't deal with it. Go out and write something original, I assure you it's much more fun than co-opting someone else's characters/world that you have absolutely no right to. Story creation is personal, and it's violation of personal property (exception naturally being corporate creations) when others think they can waltz in, put a stick up the characters' butts and make them dance how they like. I cannot understand why this is so universally considered an expression of love for a series.

Comments about childhood: You said it yourself because people do it when they're, you know, children, and all that implies. Not when they're in their late teens+. Also, children don't publish their play on Internet/elsewhere.

I just as entitled to my opinion/"high horse" as everyone else; you just don't agree with this opinion and thus classify it differently.
