Cutting your own hair

(Anonymous) 2017-01-01 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Any advice? I've tried watching youtube videos but some of the comments on the videos have me worried.

How extensive of a job do you need done? I trimmed my own bangs in college and I think I did alright but no way was I going to attempt any major cropping on my own.

I am a cosmetologist and PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. PLEASE.

But if you are going to do this and I cannot convince you: Have someone else on hand because you cannot see the back of your own head. Remember that hair is shorter when it dries (cutting wet is better) and bangs bounce or you will have teeny tiny fringe. There is no such thing as 'i would like x amount of layers,' layers should blend. Get hair cutting shears. Yes, there is a difference, you will butcher your hair with kitchen scissors.

I need to know more about what your hair looks like and what you are doing before I can tell you more.

I usually do this. You tend to get a feel for it after a while but it's a lot easier if you own a clipper to do the back of your neck and you have a mirror set up that lets you see the back of your head. When you're just learning to cut hair on yourself you should always practice on dry hair, so that way the final cut won't turn out differently than what you're looking at when you're cutting wet hair.

Also don't try to get too crazy with it the first few times you give yourself haircuts. Just stick to trimming and simple styles.

At this point I've gotten so good at it that people ask where I got it done, so I think it's safe to say that I've more or less mastered the self cut, but when all is said and done it's usually helpful to have someone check your work afterward, like a friend or partner, just to see if you've missed any spots.

Just go to a salon, it'll be so much easier in the long run. If you mess this up, you're going to want to anyway.

I used electric clippers and gave myself a buzz cut last night. Leaned over the tub so that my shoulder-length hair fell in there. Have a few spots that need spot-trimming (they look like crazy weeds on a putting green), but I've been rubbing my velvety fuzz all day long.

Is anyone looking forward to the new Sherlock?

Because I kind of am!

Season 3 and the Abominable Bride kind of killed that anticipation for me. :(

Re: Is anyone looking forward to the new Sherlock?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

After watching both Doctor Strange and Sherlock, all I can think about is how much better a Doctor Strange TV show, starring the same people as the Doctor Strange movie, and show-run by Steven Moffat, would be than either the Sherlock TV series or the Doctor Strange movie. It would mean that you could tell actual Doctor Strange stories where he's being Doctor Strange instead of retelling his origin story which is not actually a Doctor Strange story. It would have an insanely good cast, and could actually focus on the McAdams and Ejiofor characters more. And all of the shit that makes Moffat annoying in any other context would make complete sense in a Doctor Strange show. A Doctor Strange show SHOULD be all mystical and weird and convoluted. And hopefully Marvel sitting on top of him would prevent him from doing anything too terrible and stupid.

Obviously this could never exist and would probably suck if it did exist but goddamnit the dream is in my head.

I am!

I'm not a super fan of the series, but it's still a lot of fun.

I am looking forward to it. Our house has a (UK) ratings feedback box in it now, we got tapped for it during the summer, and I am looking forward to not watching it and dragging the ratings down. We're watching the Morecambe and Wise retrospective instead, take that Moffie.

Mixed feelings. I'm trying to remain optimistic but I'm not really interested in the John and Mary + baby storyline at all and I'm also not confident in the writers' ability to handle it well. I like the show. I just wish it were a better show.

Art vs Giclee

(Anonymous) 2017-01-01 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
I asked yesterday about someplace to get a good recreation of a famous painting. Someone suggested art.com and they have the print I want. But I have no idea how much better Giclee is than a regular print and if it is worth paying twice as much ($30 to $70).

Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe

Did anyone watch it? I always look forward to his end-of-year ranty summations, and this year it was particularly biting (and fucking hilarious). Also the Big Fat Quiz was pretty good too.

IM or texting- 2005

(Anonymous) 2017-01-01 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a thing that's set in 2005. Two college-age guys are having a conversation while apart for the summer. Are they doing this on IM on their computers, or are they texting?

My first instinct is IM, because that's what I would have been using at the time. But I didn't get a cell phone until 2007, and it wasn't very good for texting. The characters would have cells, but would they have been using them to carry on a somewhat long conversation like we do with smartphones nowadays?

Anyone know how to dispose of old hair products? As in, half a can of mousse or dry shampoo (basically flammable stuff under pressure) that I can't use anymore? I don't think it's legal to just dump them down a drain or toilet.
