Who are characters you can't see as another race besides what they are?

Who are characters you'd love to see reimagined as another race? And which?

(Anonymous) 2017-01-29 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Steve Rogers. His race and ethnicity is pretty integral to his character and the opportunities he was given.

Erik Lehnsherr's race and ethnicity is also super important to his character.

I think Peter Parker can be literally any race and it won't matter.

Sort of related, because Officer Hopps is, well, a bunny, but in humanizations I can't see her as anything but a white woman. She has the right combo of being a minority (a bunny) and privilege (preds vs. prey). Making her anything else seems to miss the point IMO.

Formative TV shows you watched as a kid?

Not just cartoons, but also the shows that were probably not for kids, or that obscure show that no one else watched except you and maybe your siblings, or the ones you quoted the most growing up. Do tell!

Good recent anime/animated movies!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-29 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
What are good anime (or animated, preferably 2D) movies you've seen recently?

I'm on the hunt to watch Your Name, the preview looks really cool and it got great reviews.

I also recently watched Doukyusei (Classmates). For anyone that wants to watch a gay anime movie that's artistic and heartfelt and not a yaoi, I can't recommend it enough. 2016 was a good year for anime movies!

So I cooked a cod filet at 325ºF (preheated oven) for 20 minutes, turned it off and left it in the oven for five more minutes. It was kind of on the thin side (think ½ inch or less), and I don't have a meat thermometer so I couldn't test the temperature.

It tasted a little funny, but I continued eating... got half way into it before I found a coiled up worm, dead. I spit out what I had been eating and threw away the rest.

I understand anisakiasis happens when someone eats a parasite-ridden fish that hasn't been cooked properly. How concerned should I be? Unfortunately, since I'm definitely a bit worried, if any symptoms arise, I don't know if it's because there's an infection or because I'm seriously freaking out.

I don't feel there's all that much to say about this book, maybe not as much as I usually write, since it was a short and not-very-deep read. That isn't to say I didn't enjoy it; there just isn't as much to analyze.

I liked the book a lot at first, was a little disappointed in the ending (which I thought was not tied off well and also the things that happened were a little weird). I very much enjoyed the humor. The characters were all pretty 2D but that was alright.

On the setting: I'm always interested in stories that use an interpretation of Judeo-Christian heaven-and-hell characters as the "hidden fantasy" element of an otherwise real-world setting. Of course in this case not much was done to expand on that except in the characters of Catch and Gian Hen Gian. Catch managed to be both genuinely evil and also funny. Towards the beginning of the story he was even a little endearing, but that wore off as I began to realize just how fucked up he is. ("Demon" doens't always imply pure evil in these kinds of settings, but I guess here it does.) The inclusion of jinnis in the angels-and-demon setting was unexpected but kinda interesting, but again, they didn't exapnd on it too much. (I kinda wish we'd seen an actual angel. I wonder how they'd come across in a setting where virtually all the characters are written to be completely self-centered - although I'm not saying that's super unrealistic, lol. I just have a hard time seeing this author write someone as being genuinely good in the sense of not being either neutral or evil.)

On relationships: I was definitely weirded out at the end with Travis ending up with Amanda. Like, it would have been really cute, except he'd spend the entire night just a day or two before they got together fucking Amanda's granddaughter. 0_____0 that kind of family stuff weirds me out a lot. (Reminds me of the fandom wank, which I only tangentially observed, about Steve/Peggy and Steve/Sharon.) I was also kind of disappointed that Jenny apparently wound back up with Robert. But if Robert really is going to turn his shit around (I have my doubts, since it looks like he's tried that and isn't very good at it) then it'll be alright. On the other hand, I don't know that I actively shipped Jenny with Travis - I liked their chemistry but it appeared to be kind of a shallow relationship. Might have been cool to see if it developed into something more, but I guess that wasn't going to happen. I did think Amanda's relationship with Effrom was rather endaring.

I told my friend that it was a "light and easy" read right before I got to the part about Rachel's backstory. YIKES. And then Travis' backstory was even MORE fucked up and that's saying something. Overall though I did find it easy to read while still being engaging, so that was good. And I appreciated the variety of characters even if some of them were extremely tropey. (Well, ok, almost all of them.) A few of them felt very shoehorned though - especially the nerdy guy who thought ancient aliens were going to come back to take over the world; I don't even remember his name. He had almost no development in the story and then played a huge role in the ending so that was weird.

What are your thoughts?

I really should have written something in advance because now I've read several books and can't remember everything I wanted to discuss. I'm left mostly with lasting impressions and none of them are positive.

- the relationships at the end, which I detailed in response to diet poison.
- jokes about British food were never funny but now they almost are considering how bad American food has gotten. But almost isn't good enough for Christopher Moore to drag it up so many times.
- I'm not sure if it's because Moore has since written a book that is among my top 10 or the changes in society or just who I've become over the years but I remember finding this book much funnier and overall more enjoyable when it first came out than I did this time around. But I'm so glad he wrote it because it meant he went on to write a book I love, and I'm glad I reread this one now because it was a nice marker for me about who I was then and who I am now.
- this book reminded me how much I can enjoy reading a story for the sake of the story. I've been very character focused my adult life so the characters and setting usually take precedence for me and the plot is secondary. But in this, there are so many characters and it jumps around so much that I was really just reading to read the story without any emotional attachment to the characters, not even much curiosity about how they'd end up. It was a refreshing change from my usual reads.

Posting really late (nap, food, shower having restored me to some level of coherency, at least).

I find myself without much to say, though. It was somewhat amusing, it didn't make me think too much, I didn't hate it?

None of the characters really came alive for me. While I was interested to see how it would all play out, and curious to see what would happen to the characters, I didn't really care enough about them to be desperate to find out who lived or who died, or who ended up with who.

That was probably a good thing, because I suspect I would have been a lot more irritated about the author sending Jenny back to her alcoholic husband if I'd actually seen her as a 3D person, rather than a 2d character.
