What?

I really don't think that is the norm. How many fandoms does it happen in with frequency? The only one I can think of is Voltron. Meanwhile ship wars have been happening since shipping was a thing.

There were accusations of pedophilia in Teen Wolf fandom (how dare you ship Derek with Stiles or Scott), accusations of pedophilia in Sherlock (the TJLCers were accusing people who prefer bottom!John of being pedophiles because some BNF artists drew them looking younger than they actually are), Steven Universe is constantly getting shouted at about pedophilia, basically any kind of cartoon fandom is fucked.

Yes but other than Steven Universe how frequent are those accusations. The Sherlock one consisted of like 4 people. I'd hardly call that the norm.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Something similar happened in Sherlock (though I think that was accusing people of being rapists yeah?) and similar stuff goes on in Steven Universe, though I personally haven't seen any outright accusations of pedophilia, just kind of coded implication (ie you are trash if you draw porn cause this is a kids show so you are corrupting minors or w/e)

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
No, it was accusing other fans of being pedophiles for shipping Johnlock with Sherlock topping. (Supposedly because Sherlock/John shippers drew John as looking too young.)

Voltron is what I thought of first, too, but I've seen it in some other fandoms as well. Yuri On Ice had people yelling pedophilia about shipping Yurio with Otabek, even though they're only two and a half years apart in age, because Otabek is 18 and Yurio isn't. And I've even seen some people trying to claim that Reylo is essentially pedophilia, so apparently there's a subset of people who think that any age gap at all is a bad thing. I don't think it's actually that many, but they're very loud.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-30 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Every fandom I'm in has it. Kylux is pedo, Reylo is pedo, um, I remember a ficcer getting run out of One Punch fandom because someone asked them to tag their Saitoma/Genos with motherfucking "child grooming" and when they said lolno they got attacked for not respecting people's triggers.
I'm pretty sure there was some My Little Pony "The characters don't have official ages that makes them all pedo unless proven otherwise" wank.

The Clone Wars all the clones are technically like 9 so all clone pairings are pedo.

I can't think of a single fandom without pedo being thrown around like fictional mardis gras beads

Yes, but how often is that the norm. As opposed to like 5 loud people?

In addition to those listed above: Attack on Titan, Star Wars, Ricky and Morty, Supernatural, Gravity Falls...it has become tiresomely normal to see on Tumblr.

Snk for one, 4-ish years ago, I was in there for quite a while. Ereri was a big "pedo" ship, as well as every other teen/adult ship (not that they were really given the time of day due to their lack of popularity). There were a few others like haikyuu, where the older shippers themselves got accused as pedophiles I think but I wasn't in there much and I don't know how far that extended beyond twitter drama lol. There have also been game fandoms where a coded adult with a coded teen was accused as a pedo ship and "that makes you a shitty person lol !"

I feel that pedophile-accusations within fandoms are based more on people who feel like they are not in control of their own lives (which i do admit, is usually the case for csa victims, but for others they may just be depressed and feel powerless), and will leap at the chance to belittle someone else/give them self a brownie point for saying "you're a pedophile" over a fictional ship to feel good about themselves, rather than actually disliking a ship and giving actual reasons for it. Not that I've shipped ereri but I haven't given people shit for it either. These kinds of ship wars tend to be based on more malicious accusations rather than "you have shit taste" which takes away the fun of having a good argument over two ships at all.

If it's not pedophilia accusations it will be something else that is just as "bad" or "problematic" or "disgusting" and people will jump on the bandwagon to feel good about themselves, even those who were never involved in any of it at all.

Basically, any anime fandom because I've noticed a pattern that's where a lot of powerless individuals are (who feel they lack control over their own lives or anyone) will jump at the chance to have some kind of power over someone else. Even if it's shipping in a vacuum that is tumblr (which for depressed people's tends to practically become their second home). I feel the more stable the users are on there, the more they are like "This isn't real, guys. It's fiction." And move onto thinking about actual issues in their real life and how they can solve them lol.

If it's not pedo accusations, it's accusations of racism for not shipping this, and misogyny for not shipping that, and ableism for not shipping this. I'm with OP, I definitely preferred "you're a stupid bitch who doesn't get canon if you ship my NOTP" to "you're a racist who hates black women if you ship my NOTP".

It happens reasonably frequently in fandoms I follow, but that might be because I actively seek out drama because it fuels me. If you don't follow people who are interested in drama then you may not notice it. ((But I certainly know I've been accused of being a pedohpile for reblogging art of an aged up character kissing someone and it was very wtf for me))

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
man it totally is the norm. you may think its just a few loud people in each fandom, but when you've got a bunch of people telling you they're experiencing it in multiple fandoms, you have to admit it's a phenomenon and not random isolated incidents. i hang with a lot of artists/writers who are in a lot of different fandoms respectively, and we all experience this in form or another.

In Overwatch fandom you get accusations of pedophilia for shipping grown-ass adults.

Roadhog (48) and Junkrat (25) have gotten it. Reaper (50+) and Mcree shippers (38) have gotten it. Anyone who ships DVA (19) gets it.

It's really bizarre because you get people crying about child porn and pedophilia about characters who are in their fucking 30s.

This. Back in the day if you didn't ship the 'correct' pairing you were stupid and lacked basic comprehension skills. These days you're actively promoting ~unhealthy relationships, or supporting paedophilia (the whole Johnlock thing, FFS!), or whatever BS label they've decided is most likely to shame people into toeing the line.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
Yeeep. In my fandom, not shipping the pure, morally correct ships will get you accused of racism and/or misogyny. It's awful, and it's pretty well ruined the fandom.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm still a part of the former ship wars!

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
Agreed. Anything over the endless moralizing we have now.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 03:32 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I miss the days of just good 'ol ship wars. :/ Someone tried to claim that my OTP was pedophilia just because they have a decent size age difference, but they're adults. It's so ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
I feel like it's kind of funny that, from what I've seen, there's a small enclave of fandom where I've never really seen pedo accusations, and that's sports anime– most of which feature characters in their young-to-mid teens.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 03:37 pm (UTC)(link)
For those people saying it doesn't happen that much, one of the biggest wanks recently in the fucking' SEX TOY fandom is on if it's ok for adults to get sex toys themed around franchises for children or if getting an orange vibrator because you think Jasper is hot makes you a pedo.

The forums I was on banned the worst offenders and kept the couple dozen people going "well... it's disgusting and wrong and pedo, but I guess technically it's not illegal...... "

I want to add this wasn't even about minor characters, this was "Thinking the Doctor is hot makes you a sicko because Doctor Who is a FAMILY show you disgusting freak. Think of the children!"

Back in the Harry Potter fandom heyday, Snape/Harry was a mega-popular pairing. I don't recall even once hearing a 'pedo!' thrown around.

(Anonymous) 2017-01-31 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
It's funny how the social justice warriors used to be people outside the fandom stirring up shit about things they didn't really understand and now they're actively inside the fandom and still missing the point.

If you can't push the boundaries and explore possibilities in fanfiction, a world of what if, what's the damn point?
