I just rewatched Death Note with the SO, and it is NOT what I remembered, but I was 14 when I first saw it. I remembered it as this SUPER SERIOUS drama featuring lovable characters, which got kinda dull once you got to the Mello and Near arc and as an L/Light Shipper I HATED Misa. On rewatch I realized that it's actually a comedy (Although every once in a while I get the impression I'm supposed to be taking something ridiculous seriously) in a world where literally everyone is an asshole. And Misa is my favorite character. And it's not as good as I remember, though it's still enjoyable (And I still got bored once Near showed up), and there's a lot that I can appreciate better as a rational adult.

Ha, I wouldn't say it's a comedy, but there's definitely some gothic humor elements, especially with Ryuk observing all the nonsense.

Misa is terrible and I always hated that she never seemed to be held accountable for her actions, but I suppose from the comedy angle, she is the ultimate troll, so I can appreciate that.

I think the manga is more serious but the anime gets downright ridiculous. I remembered the Potato Chip scene. It was still surprisingly hilarious.

I dunno, I find Misa kind of tragic. Granted, killing for love is even more morally gross than killing for, ostensibly, 'peace' (later, Godhood), but ultimately, the entire series was one long decline for her that, according to Word of God, ends in her suicide.

I actually never understood the reaction to the Potato Chip scene, because to me, it sounded like Light was mocking and basically giving a big Fuck You to L. So, being mockery, I always thought it was supposed to be a little funny. I didn't feel it was the anime being awkward and overdramatic. I loved that scene.

I'm not sure I feel Misa was any more tragic than Light, though. She's posited to be "used" by Light - voluntarily - but in reality, she is totally okay with mass murder and does it long before Light meets her. And she kills, or is okay with killing, for petty reasons, too. I think it's totally unacceptable that the series (and live action movies) seemed to absolve her of any guilt while still punishing Light, when her kill count was probably astronomically higher than Light's and she did it because she wanted to.

Not saying there isn't room to pity Misa, I just don't see her as a moral character, or a victim who isn't responsible for her actions. I just wanted to see the series ascribe the same guilt to her as it did Light.

I would agree to you if that was the only scene like it, but it kind of keeps going. Forever. DRAMATIC PEN SWIPE! DELETEDELETEDELETE...

I didn't say she was more tragic than Light. I think most of the characters have something tragic about them, and Light was always heartbreaking to me because he started out with good intentions and slid from there. (I don't know why you would say her kill count was higher than Light's, though. Light was doing this for YEARS, and that's if you don't include Misa, Mikami, and Takada killing on his orders.)

But I don't think Misa gets off scott-free. They're both punished by the universe. Light's punishment is losing his game, which was a massive blow to his ego, and dying, because Light feared death. Misa didn't fear death. She willingly gave up half her lifespan for shinigami eyes before ever even meeting Light (didn't she do it again later?), and was more than willing to blow the whole operation, even though that would lead to her death. What Misa feared was losing Light. Not only did she not have Light to begin with, but by the time Takada came around, she was no longer blissfully believing Light loved her. She was starting to get suspicious and make more rash decisions, like that whole dinner scenes with Takada. By the end of the story, their public front is crumbling as Light 'dates' Takada (and it's implied he actually did sleep with her), the love of her life is dead, and she is alone, which is another thing she feared after the death of her parents. Plus, Word of God says she kills herself soon after.

Aw, but again, I liked the Sakujo! scenes. The dramatic death montages were cool. But to each their own. I guess I feel they had to be a little more dramatic, because since so much of the show takes place on an intellectual level, not a physical level, there's not a lot of actual movement. Since it's a murder, it makes sense to me to liven up a scene that's literally just someone writing in a notebook, but hey, I can see why it didn't work for everyone.

It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I think Misa's kill count was higher because she was the acting Kira more often. As in, Light had her kill people when he was in a position when he couldn't, which was a lot of the time. My memory is fuzzy, but I thought she was the acting Kira over the time gap? At any rate, my point is that she's just as guilty as Light. And again, since Mikami and Takada were pro-Kira and killed because they personally wanted to, I don't think their kills should be attributed to Light, at least not solely.

I agree that the universe in the manga and anime probably punishes Misa since she commits suicide and loses Light. What I don't like is that Near didn't go after her. And I hated the live action movies for many, many reasons, but in that, she isn't punished at all and doesn't kill herself. Even if she lost her memories, when Light lost his own memories L implied Light would be punished for the crime anyway. I get that Light is obviously the mastermind, here, but Misa is in no way less guilty than he is, and again, she was in it because she wanted to do it and enjoyed being Kira and killing people, not because she was threatened or coerced by Light.

I think you have a point about the movement, but it still had me bursting out laughing

I would argue that while killing on Light's behalf would make Misa just as guilty of murder, those would still count as Light's kills by proxy. The amount of people she murdered of her own decision was very small.

Well, by the time Near came around the series was phasing Misa out. Whether or not she was the second Kira was irrelevant because she wasn't actively killing, Mikami was, and he was the priority. But that being said, he did go after Misa. They bugged the whole house and had her under watch under guise of a 'body guard', but by that point she'd given up the notebook and didn't do anything that gave them evidence. The only one who ever had proof that Misa was Kira was L, and he was forced to let go of that thanks to Light's gambit.

You keep bringing up that Misa is in no way less guilty, but I never at any point said she was, and have agreed with you about that in every comment.

I hated Misa, and not for shippy reasons (I shipped no one in this show), but I kept wondering if she left her brain somewhere because she came off as so stupid and that's why I hated her.

Eh, from my perspective, Misa's actually quite bright. She certainly pulls off quite a few things most 'normal' people wouldn't. She's just stupid compared to all the super geniuses running around, and I think her airhead persona may be at least partially a purposeful act.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
If I recall, isn't she actually rather smart when she's introduced? I feel like mostly her character is reduced for the sake of comedy.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2017-02-05 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
It had nothing to do with most of the other main characters being geniuses, she came off as less than average to me. Yeah, even if an act, it did not endear her to me.

She did successfully commit crimes as Kira, AND lure Light to a public place without ever once being discovered by the police, L, or Light (That is, until L suspected her later). She even had a series of steps to keep her actions as Kira from being traced back. Didn't she also have a part in some of the later schemes? At the very least, she was able to correctly deduce several of Light's plans even only knowing her role in them, which was more than anyone else other than L.

[personal profile] sachiko_san 2017-02-05 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, in the end, the way she acted around people made me think her stupid. Also her being blind to Light being a dick because of her infatuation.

She's certainly socially stupid, I'll agree with that wholeheartedly. I still think some of it's an act, but not the stuff with Light. She's an absolute dumbass when it comes to light.

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I think she did a few "smart" or ballsy things, like finding Light was Kira, and the thing with... was Higuchi his name? When she took the initiative to spy on him. She definitely did her share of moving the plot along, and I agree, she wasn't actually an idiot in terms of IQ.

But her character was also constantly detrimental to Light. Like, when she'd threaten to kill anyone else he dated. She was literally a scary stalker who murdered people for emotional reasons, and was a constant loose cannon to Light. I guess that's fine if you're not "Team Kira", but I mean, Misa was going down with the ship (at least theoretically) so it was a little aggravating how she blackmailed and was a constant thorn in his side.

She was absolutely detrimental to Light, but she and Light, I would argue, were mutually destructive to each other. She was a risk to his entire operation and more than willing to kill to get her way, and he was more than willing to do whatever it took to keep her on his side, not just because she could send everything tumbling, but because she was a tool for him to use.

You take that back! Matsuda is NOT an asshole!

Okay, fair, Matsuda is an adorkable sweetheart. I love him. And I love his random bursts of courage.
