Refinancing Student Loans

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I asked yesterday but it was a bit late!

Has anyone ever done this? One of my loans has a 9% interest rate and I was hoping I could refinance it to a lower one now that I have actual credit (it is quite good at 768).

I'd just call you fin. aide office, tbh. It's so tricky. Don't get misinformation from strangers on the internet.

I'm not trying to be unkind here, but how the hell would we know? We're not your loan company. Call and ask.

Lego: Batman

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I want to take a 3 year old to see the movie but can't go during the day. He sits still fairly well but may talk a bit. Would Sunday evening be the best time to bring him? Maybe 2 weeks after it comes out?

Can you take him during a weeknight? Because I go to the movies fairly often during the week and in the entire theater there might be 7 people, depending on the popularity of the movie and how many weeks the movie has been out.

The theaters by me run specials on Tuesdays, so Wednesdays are even less crowded.

I think that would be fine. It's long enough after the opening that ~serious~ moviegoers will probably have already seen it, plus it's basically a kids movie so there's gonna be little kids and little kids aren't totally clued in on the whole no talking during movies thing yet, so it's expected that there might be a bit of chatter.

Career Change

[personal profile] kaijinscendre 2017-02-05 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I am sick of my dead end job and am thinking of making a change. I thought about trying to find some job that will let me use my hobby of baking. Sadly, the only bakeries around here focus on cakes/pastries while I am more into breads and such.

I have a degree in Special Education but do not like teaching. Though, I do like working with kids outside of the classroom. I thought about teaching abroad for a year or two but don't really know what I would do if I hated it OR how I would transition back to working in the US.

So, I am looking for some general advice (or motivation) about how to change careers or jobs. OR what career paths I should be looking at as an amateur baker and education degree holder.

Are there ways to get into teaching cooking classes? That might be one cool way of merging your two skill sets, possibly while working to get a new degree/go to culinary school (??), or the like.

There is one college around here that sometimes offers culinary courses but it is usually just cake decorating and such (which I am not a huge fan of).

But one day being able to merge my degree and hobby would be awesome. I don't know if Home Economics is even a thing they teach anymore.

If you're serious about baking, perhaps do small shifts at the bakery to see if that's what you want first, try seeing if they'll hire someone for weekend shifts, this way you'll know if it's really want you want to do before making a giant career change.

I'm not trying to discourage you, only to be practical. Definitely make sure you have some savings before switching careers.

Is there a vocational school nearby that you could get experience with more baking?

I've had several friends teach abroad and all of them transitioned differently back to the US.

Sadly, there are no bakeries in the town I live in. But I have been thinking of moving in with a friend. There is one place hiring in the town she lives in. It would be mostly selling the goods but they offer training. It would be a $2 paycut BUT it has health insurance and benefits (my current job offer none). I have about $3500 I could use for a move and such.

There are none in the town I live in but I'll look at some of the bigger cities for vocational classes.

Maybe tutoring or adult 'schools'? I don't know what the education requirements are for things that fall outside real schools, but I have seen a lot of tutoring places around and my dad used to teach adults to read and shit and he has no background in education whatsoever.

I mean, my grandfather was an English Prep School headmaster and he wrote books on grammar, but my dad went into banking.

I'll have to look at some nearby cities for that. That might be more my style. I am fairly good at teaching, I just suck at classroom management.

You could always try selling your baked goods on the side. I remember someone mentioned they did that, just a small local thing. It would give you a little more experience and a little more income, if that's a motivator for you.

There are some places that will work with special needs children and adults to teach them a trade, maybe you could find something like that? Teaching people how to bake?

I have no advice and simply want to say good luck! I am floundering in the same position (sick of current job, in need of change, no idea where to go from there) so I know the struggle.

If you want to try teaching abroad it's pretty simple. There are plenty of places that will hire English teachers without training so long as you have a university degree.

Avoid large chain schools, look for small independent places. You are much more likely to have a positive working environment that way. Carrying on along the same vein is the possibility of getting hired by a place that caters to tutoring and after school programs for children in North America. They tend to look pretty favourably on people with any amount of teaching experience, even if it's English teaching work.

If you want to branch out with education beyond the classroom there's always the possibility of doing adult education courses. I'm not entirely sure where you'd get a foot in the door there, but checking out local community colleges and asking around there would probably be a good start.

Computer

(Anonymous) 2017-02-05 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
My computer's fan or engine seems to be running constantly. It just seems to be making a lot of noise all the time, and I'm not sure what exactly to do. I've updated drivers, cleaned up what I can clean....it just doesn't sound good. It seems to be running programs alright, if a little slow on some. Is it just something I should ignore or is there a possible solution I could implement?

Can you determine which fan it is?

Also, how old is this PC and have you ever dusted it out? Has the fan always been running and you're just now noticing?

Yeah, but ... objectively? Or do you just have a poor opinion of yourself?

Anti-depressants

(Anonymous) 2017-02-06 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
I don't like the idea of being on them, mainly due to the numerous negative side effects I've had previously. But I'm beginning to think my lack of motivation or ability to get anything done is a result of my depression and anxiety and is really affecting my life. But I'm really wary of going on them because of past experiences. Plus, I don't have much faith in my current doctor to really listen to my worries without brushing them off as paranoia, but I don't have any options to change doctors due to insurance and lack of options in my area.

I would love some positive stories or advice. I wouldn't be going on these for Life, but I'm thinking a double approach of taking them and talking to a therapist. I just feel really hopeless at the moment.

I was on Paxil for a year. It was fantastic for my depression and anxiety. It also has very mild side effects (I had none).

Don't take Effexor.

Re: Anti-depressants

I can't really give you much advice about this, as I'm only on anti-anxiety medication.

Incidentally though, if you're preferring a more natural route some people have found that a low carb diet (keto) has lowered their stress and depression. It is not a cure, it tends to be circumstantial because not all depression is created alike. But a lot of it can be caused by being unhealthy, so it's an option to look into if you want to experiment.
