This is about Yuri on Ice, isn't it?

Never mind, I misread the bit about them pretending to be gay to gross people out. Caryy on!

But... how does any of that apply to Yuri on Ice? Like, unless the stereotype thing is gay ice skaters. lol I'll grant Victor maaaybe seems a little flamboyant, but I can't think of a single gay stereotype (besides male ice skater) that Yuri fulfills.

DA

Now that you mention it, people have put some pretty twisted readings out there about how the blatantly gay scenes are OBVIOUSLY meant as jokes, so it's possible the OP is one of those people and has read even further into it to believe the other characters are making fun of them.

But I have a strong feeling it's anime even if it's not YOI. I have no idea which one, but the description of what's going on in the show sounds very much like an anime thing.

Probably not since this seems more like American television sitcom gay characters that always have the gay characters as flamboyant and always hitting on every other male character and creeping them out or the lesbians as these tough brutes that wear flannel.

Not that Yuri on Ice is perfect, since I have huge issues with Victor as a character. Mostly that he acts like a fucking irresponsible infant instead of a 27 year old man.

Modern Family?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-30 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my first guess. I feel like Mitch and Cam would honestly have been better as a new couple, if nothing else - because then their issues with communicating would be part of two very different people starting a relationship.

I actually had the same issue with Gloria and Jay when I first started watching the show, although in their case they stopped being awkward after the first season. It just felt like they were still learning about each other.

(Although I don't watch the show anymore, so I can't speak to either couple in the last few seasons.)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-30 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
This was my thought too, but I think the Modern Family gay couple is supposed to be actually gay and not pretending to be for laughs/as a gross-out.

I don't really watch the show but it seems too genuine/heartfelt and OP says they're "dating for homophobic laughs". I don't think a married couple with a kid would fit. Even with the clown wig.

Sounds like a bad show, hoss.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-30 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
I almost want to find out which show this is.

But I feel you, OP. I have the same reaction when anyone brings up the Will and Grace revival.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
It can apply to almost any sitcom or American TV that thinks they get progressive points for having gay characters but the gay characters are just there to perv on hetero male characters to make them uncomfortable. I've seen it too many times to count and it's tragic.

my guess for this is it's always sunny. (which i don't actually watch but a ton of my friends love.)

(Anonymous) 2017-03-30 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
It mostly fits except they aren't doing it for homophobic laughs or to gross people out.

Prince of Tennis? It's pretty much implied all Koharu and Yuji do is just for laughs and to distract their opponents. Whether they're together or not is debatable, even though Yuji is very into Koharu and Koharu is probably queer but he's also a okama stereotype.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
That was my first guess. Wasn't it outright stated that they did it for distraction purposes? I find them cute personally, but I'm not an active shipper in the fandom and I can definitely see where people would have problems with them. Shitenhouji as a whole is a really flamboyant team.

It's girls isn't it? I bet it's hot girls.
Someone who watches shows with ambiguous lesbians guess for me!

Nah, girl-on-girl is for male titillation, not laughs. It's equally fake, because they all also love and will return to the dick, but it's hot and not gross.

Kurt/Blaine on Glee?

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
I hate (okay, maybe just dislike in some cases) the canon gay couple on most shows that have them. They're almost all (at least the ones I've seen) riduculously stereotypical and it seems like their only purpose is to be "the gay character(s)".

I'm really curious which show this is, though. There's not a show I watch or any that I've even heard of where I can imagine the gay characters are only pretending to be gay. Even if I don't like a lot of the gay characters on the shows I watch, I do believe they're actually gay.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think MTV did a show some years back where two girls pretended to be in a relationship for social media attention and shit.

Yeah, I'm not sure about the "pretending to be gay" thing either. The only thing I can guess is bromance and other characters seeing how close they are and thinking they are gay usually played for jokes.

(Anonymous) 2017-03-31 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, is this about that Real O'Neals show? I've never seen it, but have definitely gotten the impression from the commercials that the gay character isn't really gay and it's some big "let's laugh at gay people" joke.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2017-04-01 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
Watched one episode of that and it was a bland show but the gay kid is gay and actually the only one that is not mocked by narration.
