This is sometimes true with big fandoms, but I find that with the smaller or mid-sized ones the highest kudosed fic(s) are usually the best, and everything below those is pretty terrible.

Every person I've met who makes a point of going on about how they watch old movies isn't very many people, so no. But thanks for your concern. ;)

Zimmer is alright, he always has at least one solid song and otherwise does well to capture the mood, but I don't always want to listen to entire albums of his scores.

I personally stan Danny Elfman just because I usually enjoy his soundtracks in full.

The politician is Marine Le Pen. MLP are the initials, and I assume 'marine' is the french for Luna's dark blue color?

There's a small segment of Bowie fans who ship his various personas together. I guess you could call that a fandom?

Robin Hood

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone asked last week about the King Arthur legends, and a good source book for those, so I'd like to ask if anyone had similar recs for the Robin Hood mythos? I'll take good fiction book recs, and also I'd love if some could rec a decent text book history on the mythos, one that is easy to read for people with minimal academic background. I know so little about it, beyond the Clannad show and the Rickman version. Everyone tells me it is a very diverse mythos with lots of additions to it over the years, but I have no idea where to start. So, please help. Thanks.

While I don't feel superior to anyone, I do tend to eye-roll at people who refuse to even give an old movie a try on a stupid basis ("It's not in color!" "It's not HD!" "That's a Grandma movie!")

Alternating between beer and whiskey, getting very enthusiastic and involved about whatever we're talking about to the point it sometimes gets annoying

I come in wearing sweatpants, get drunk right away, try to have sex with at least four people, and join every conversation by immediately getting outraged and starting fistfights left and right. I also am constantly making shit up so I sound smarter.

I think there's a big difference between someone like me, say, who has no particular interest in seeking out old movies, and who doesn't love older movies as a group more than newer stuff for aesthetic reasons, but has seen some and loved a few (Lawrence of Arabia and Lion in Winter are old favorites) and is open to the idea that there's cool stuff there, versus someone who dismisses a huge and diverse body of art as 'old and boring' or whatever. I think anyone who does #2 about anything - video games as art, or rap, or whatever, even if it's not their cup of tea, is probably close-minded in other ways. OTOH if OP also thinks they're better than someone like me, who isn't opposed to old moves but also not especially intrigued, then it's just dumb snobbery.

Netspeak, although using my phone I get it because just typing this I've been autocorrected and made a million typos. Also, I realize people are serious when they use it, whereas I used to assume they were trying to be cool, and/or very immature. That's how it used to be - kids and trolls used it. So I'm trying to be more tolerant.

But it still grates me. The word "you" is three damn letters.

See to me there's a point where you just have to bookmark stuff, especially with recipes

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
well that's great for you. as a transguy who can't afford hormones or top surgery, I find transman fic and art extremely uncomfortable. I don't like constant reminders of what I am and what I can't have.

it's not the fetishizing that gets me at all, it's the self-butt-patting glorifying of markers of transgenderism. like, "let's hit all the checkboxes - binder? scars? blind comfort with genitals? yay look at me and how progressive I am!" there's often an underlying smugness about how much better the artist/writer is for glorifying these giant blinking red flags of difference rather than just going with the cis default. that is what this transguy hates.

this is me irl, except usually I talk too much about how much I hate beer and will bitch for hours if there is no cider on tap

Being interrupted when I'm reading. It's to the point where books have been ruined for me because I kept getting interrupted while reading them - finally I was like "I give up," and never picked those books back up.

Yeah, I know, it's nutty.

Person in the corner drinking nonalcholohic sodas or fruity wine coolers and usually in her own corner with a comp plugged into the wall. Or drawing in a sketchbook. Occasionally will comes] over to talk to people when I get lonely

I know, but my bookmarks are so overcrowded that if I do that, chances are I'll never go back to that recipe again. Same with fic. Out of sight, out of mind, etc etc.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
ah, I see.

(and here was me just shipping him with Mick, Brian, and Iggy!)

You'd better be, you god damned brony scum.

Oh, I think I downloaded this the other day? Cool.

Best lyrics you've heard recently?

Or ever?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-06 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Nayrt
I disagree, at least partially. Sometimes in smaller fandoms it is eaven easier for charming but talentfree bnfs to gain popularity. So it really depends on the particular fandom dynamic.

Today I learned the obvious fact...

There is no such place as the north pole.

Should in already have known that? Maybe but I bet I'm not alone in believing, for so many years, that there was somwhere up there. Like obviously I didn't believe its where Santa lived, but I always believe it was somewhere someone could live.

Nope, I knew that south pole was on the Antarctica landmass with the polar bears and the penguins, and I always assumed that at the opposite end of the planet that had be a landmass simular Antarctica where the north pole would be found. Nope, just water and ice. No landmass. If Santa's workshop is up there it must be in a boat or a submarine.

Tell me I'm a fucking moron for not already knowing this, or tell menif you too always believed there was a land mass opposite the south pole.
