This bothers me too. I've noticed an increase lately in pressure to avoid writing fics that aren't just tooth-rotting fluff, usually with that odd phrasing that implies there's something immoral about wanting to read angst. Some people have even tried to put an SJ spin on it, claiming (for example) that if you want to read angst or hurt/comfort for a femslash fic, you're clearly just a homophobe who wants to see soft smol sapphics suffer.

It's irritating.

I've noticed this too. I read a fic in my fandom that the author described as a very dark interpretation of the pairing, and I didn't really get it. It wasn't the healthiest relationship but it wasn't even close to what I would consider a "dark" take. I'm used to fandoms where the source material is fucked up enough that anything short of partner abuse can show up in your average romance fic.

I don't what fandom this is for but I've noticed some fandoms I've been in that are like this. While not angst averse, Shadowhunters has a VERY homogeneous type of fanfic themes. Nothing TOO angsty, nothing TOO kinky, no pairings TOO out of the set rules. It is really annoying. :/

Uh...that would really piss me off too. The intense culture of fluff needs to die already.

Fluff is fine, but variety is good.

I love fluff. But I especially love angst topped with fluff, if it's well done. I like both (though I don't like unresolved angst).

Wow yeah, that's pretty obnoxious. And I'm saying that as someone who likes fluff.

I like the touch of the 666 word count at the bottom there, good job OP. (Unlesss that wasn't deliberate, then it'll be a wonderful coincidence).

But personally I like fluff fic and am not much of a fan of some of the more extreme angst fics I've seen over the years, however variation is good too. People using it as a moral highground though is weird as fuck but at this point fandom using stupid arguments to seem better than other fans is business as usual.

Nothing you can do about other peoples' preferences though I get why it's frustrating. But like, holy shit that post is obnoxious. Wow. Why can't people just ignore prompts they don't like??

(Anonymous) 2017-05-09 02:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I have no problem with fluff. I just find it frustrating and bizarre that there's this culture of demonising anything that isn't 100% happy.

Man, WTF has happened to fandom in general? It's like it's been taken over by Stepford Wives.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-08 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Everything must be pure and healthy and happy and if that means fic is all a bunch of plotless after-school specials, so be it!

My current main fandom is large, so there's always some variety, but I definitely skip over most fics labeled "fluff" - especially if that's all there is and they look short - unless I'm either desperate or I've liked other stuff by that author. It's not that I don't like fun or want my favorite characters to be happy, but sometimes the nature of the canon is such that you have to put in some work to get the characters to a place where they can be happy and if you don't put in the work the fluff is unsatisfying, and the rest of the time it's just not going to be an interesting story if it's all just cute, domestic fluff because that's just a big, fat wad of nothing happening. I like happy *endings.*

Well, that's obnoxious of them. I prefer less angst myself, but I wouldn't do something like that.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-08 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
That is super obnoxious. Can't they just let things be, and let angst prompts be angst prompts?

Wow, high-horsing over writing angst? These people need to chill. What the hell.
*takes out cane* in my day whump was how you showed you love the characters!

It's not that I want an all-day march of misery, but the best fluff has some angst in it imo, and vice-versa.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-09 12:11 am (UTC)(link)
I wonder what fandom that is because mine seems to love angst a little to much. I can see why some people get tired of adultery/cheating, drama, character death, and violence in fics. I think it's good in moderation but some people seem to take joy in causing their readers emotional distress.

Basically what I'm saying is angst as part of the story is okay, but angst for the sake of fucking with people is not cool. I know some authors that openly say, "I love drinking my readers tears".

I feel like part of this change in attitude in fandom has happened because we keep catering to minors who act like the authority on everything and see everything as abuse and if you like anything that's not pure and wholesome smolbeans you are an . It's gotten really bad these past few years and no ones telling these kids to shut the hell up and take responsibility for monitoring their own fandom intake and stop being entitled.

Amen! I respect that people want fluff and would never discourage anyone from writing it, but gollygee, some diversity of fic would be nice, too!

Also, to tangent off this, unhappy ending fic/unrequited love is something that I would adore seeing more of. I know that probably makes me sound super weird, but sometimes I want the story of what someone does after they are rejected and there's no hope of a happy ending with the one they are in love with.

I'm sorry, OP. That sucks.

I love to read and write H/C and angst, so this type of behavior really frustrates me. Perhaps you should start your own community for those that like angst so that those stories can be written and the writers can have some support.

I've been called a psychopath because I like reading/writing H/C and angst. It's not fun, and there's no call for it.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-09 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I could have easily written that summary, completely tongue-in-cheek. The idea that somebody would say that in all *seriousness*? *rolls eyes* I'm in a small fandom. There was very, very little angst before I started writing; luckily that is some of my favourite stuff to write and the niche was filled. And thanks to right place, right time, I became a reasonably well-known writer. There's a lot of ribbing between fans about loving/hating angst, but because it's such a small community it's 100% known that it's joking.

However, it was incredibly weird to suddenly see a bunch of people start writing angst for angst's sake; there are times I want to scream at other writers that unrelenting, out-co-character misery doesn't tug at readers' heart strings, it emotionally exhausts them to the point of apathy. And they just keep heaping agony after agony to the point I'm TRYING to write a h/c fic and everything seems mild. But, y'know, that overly manipulative ANGSSSSTTTTT has its readers and I am not judge and jury for what can and can not be posted. Doesn't stop me from hoping someone else come along and starts a fluff trend. LOL

(Anonymous) 2017-05-09 05:02 pm (UTC)(link)
One of the reasons I write fluff is because it feels like something like 80% of the fic in my fandom is over the top angst. But specifically calling out someone's fic or fic prompt is crass and rude.

Have I occasionally seen stuff that's been "What if Character was a quadruple amputee who's also blind and has an eating disorder and depression, read about his beautiful suffering." and gone ".... time to work on my fic where Character is happy." ? Of course! But no one else needs to know about it. It certainly doesn't make me more moral or better than anyone.

I think the root of the problem is that with the new 'SJW' buzzswords getting flung at fic there's more of a tendency to frame what you like as more moral and Good, and what other people like as immoral and Wrong. Which is as old as fandom, my AU is creative and inspired, your canon-compliant is unimaginative and boring. Your AU is lazy, my canon-compliant is skillful. Your rivalship is unbelievable, my friends-to-lovers is more IC, your friends-to-lovers is boring my rivalship is exciting. It's just, I think, for a lot of people it's easier to shake off the accusations on if their fandom preferences are boring than if they're framed as morally wrong. Most nerds are used to shaking off being called weird by their peers, but being told they're sinners tends to come from authority figures.
