I’ve never had big, bereft feelings of emotion and despair over a musician’s death. My world hasn’t been rocked. I don’t feel like it’s an end of an era and nothing will ever be the same. It’s just sad in the way that all death sad.

I don’t even have the excuse that their heyday was before my time. I’m 34. That’s prime Chris Cornell age, and Bowie and Prince were big in my formative years. It’s just...I’m not invested. At best, I was indifferent to their music, at worst, I didn’t like it.

* Everyone I know has just been absolutely gutted by these deaths, and I just can’t relate.

In terms of historical wankfests, I still believe that the Richard III Society provides the best bang for one's buck.

Context: They're trying to stop Leicester Cathedral from staging Shakespeare's Richard III play on the grounds that it is "insensitive and disrespectful". LOL!

Fair enough.

Call me cynical, but I think for a lot of people, the reaction has more to do with being reminded of their own mortality and not missing the artist they didn't know and barely ever listened to.

Dang.

wow.

Different people have different connections to different things, you know?

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I also can't relate, but that's because I've never felt overwhelming despair at any celebrity's death. Frankly, I find it a little obnoxious when people do, and even disrespectful, like you're trying to make it about you. I get being disappoint, surprised, and saddened to hear that a beloved figure died, but the dramatic attention-grabbing snot and tears is so annoying.

Isn't it considered pretty much accepted fact at this point that he had the princes in the tower killed? Like, these people are basically choosing to disregard all of the historical research and sources out there just because...idk, they think Richard was hot or whatever oddball "reasoning" they apply?

I was devastated by Bowie's death7, but that's because I've been a lifelong fan. Prince's death was tragic, but kess sad for me because I've never been that into him. I barely knew who Chris Cornell was and while I recognize the circumstances are terrible, I'm not bothered.

Aw, I like POTC. Although it's mildly annoying to me that they are bringing The Turner Family Show back. I liked 4 better than the others because it didn't have the mawkishness of the Will & Elizabeth storyline in it. (Also because mermaids, and because Blackbeard was a really excellent villain.)

Oh my God, get over yourself. If it's not an exclusively NA name, you've got no leg to stand on.

But I'm super curious as to what the name is now.

I'm not sure OP is saying anything more than that they're personally annoyed by it.

I'm glad they are bringing back the Turners because maybe it means there will be a bit less Jack at least. The movies were better where he was there but not so front and center. The more Jack there was the worse the movies got.

I was just happy to have Jack and Barbossa back.

But if, as you say, it isn't a Native-exclusive name and "anyone could have it," then...the name choice for the character isn't really anything to do with Natives, specifically? I mean, I get why you would feel this way, because you personally identify with that name, but it doesn't make a lot of sense objectively speaking.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
I guess it depends on how you go about it? I don't know Chris Cornell and I know Prince but am pretty ambivalent on Prince, but I adored Bowie. I wasn't garment rending, loud wailing, teeth gnashing sad when he passed, though I was sad because his music was part of my formative years and as a person he always seemed so confident and himself, which helped me do the same.

For people who had a lot more things personally going on in their lives where music means more to them than just something to listen to, I can see being despaired by that musician's death if it was something that helped them cope.

I however do find myself finding the public displays of over-dramatic written sobbing etc to be a little ridiculous. Not the heartfelt posts of 'so and so meant so much to me and got me through hard times' though.

Barbossa! Possibly my favorite POTC character.

(Anonymous) 2017-05-26 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
The phrasing makes it seem like they think the writers on the show did something egregiously awful on purpose, though. They "dared" to write a cowboy with a last name they personally have. The temerity!

FFS.

If it's a name anyone could have, then it's just a coincidence that this character happens to share it with you, right? It doesn't sound reasonable to expect the writers to avoid using the name because of the possibility that there might be a Native American family somewhere that has it.
