What series did you expect to love but ended up hating?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 12:48 am (UTC)(link)
Is there a series you thought you would love or got recommended to over and over again that you ended up hating? Not because the fans/fandom ruined it, but because you disliked the series itself.

Not a full series but I was SO disappointed in Brave. It was Pixar's first female lead, an independent female lead where the story is mostly about her relationship with her mother SOUNDS like a story I would like but the movie itself fell apart. I didn't even find Merida likable.

I liked the soundtrack and visuals, but Merida herself annoyed me and I found her mom to be a more likeable character.

I heard that Pixar really struggled to make her likable and they had a lot of issues putting the story together and it honestly shows in the final product. Yeah it's a pretty movie but that's the best you can say for it.

I agree with this.

The film's biggest failure is that Merida isn't a likable character. I'm willing to cut her some slack because she is only fifteen or so, so a lot of that teenage angst is to be expected, but accepting that as somewhat realistic doesn't make up for the entire character. I guess my personal issue with her is how long it takes her to admit that she was wrong in the first place.

Luckily for her, Frozen came along, and with it, Elsa. Without that, Merida would be my least favorite Disney princess.

Me too, and not just because their first female lead was so forgettable, but because this film is one of extremely few large-scale western animation films that lets the hero fuck up and have to clean up their own mess. I find those stories so much more interesting than the ones where Good Heroes are victims of Evil Villains.

Vampire Knight. Initially, I did like it, but then we found out Yuki wasn't human and it all went to shit. Pretty artwork, lousy story.

Supergirl.

Well that's only half-true. I really enjoyed S1 and I loved the interactions of Kara and Cat so much I could have been a whole season just watching those two.

Then S2 came along and it felt like the fun, campy part of the show just died. :/ Hated that Kara and Alex's search for Jeremiah kinda just took...a backseat? Especially since his fate was left such a mystery in S1. Hated the way Kara's arc turned, hated how James was treated, missed Cat and Lucy, etc.

Funnily enough I liked the way Winn turned out and I enjoyed Lena too. But like I said, the fun spirit of the show just felt like it died. Still enjoy season 1 though.

I'm sort of the opposite. I hated S1, but at least think S2 is watchable (I still don't like the series).

The more I hear about S2, the more I just want to rewatch S1 instead of moving on.

I was fine with s2 for the most part I just lost interest. But that seems to happen with me and DC live action shows (also dropped flash and arrow.)

I agree the way James has been treated sucks though.

Death Note

I always thought it sounded right up my alley, but I only ever watched an episode or two of the anime and I absolutely, positively hated the first volume of the manga, so I've never looked back.

I'm curious, what didn't you like?

miss kobayashi's dragon maid looked cute and fun and then the fanservice started

kill la kill looked unique and interesting and then the rape jokes started

psychopass just ended up boring me, i found the characters just unlikeable and uninteresting

sry it's only anime i'm a weeb

Kill la kill has an extremely twisted sense of humor but the underlying plot is really good (albeit also extremely weird.)

Don't ask me how I endured it's sense of humor though when I don't find that stuff funny, maybe because I enjoy the art style and eventually the plot did catch me.

Psychopass had a lot of potential for me, I really thought it was going to ping all my buttons. Neat designs, cool character concepts, darker and more mature themes... but instead, it just came across as unnecessarily fanservicey and over the top to me. I was sort of invested in just a few characters, and the one I was wanting to really pull through as a major player ended up dying, and I pretty much quit after that.

Maybe I could give it another try, it was a long time since I tried watching it. But I remember feeling a little confused that it wasn't going in any of the directions I had been hoping it would.

Game of Thrones. High budget fantasy series? Sounds fantastic! In reality, so, so fucking stupid and tryhard.

Saaaaaame. I like the books, but bounced hard off the TV show.

Re: What series did you expect to love but ended up hating?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 02:58 am (UTC)(link)
ohhh, good one. i didn't read the books so i came in with no expectations except grim fantasy soap opera...

and then eventually i noticed that i skipped half of the episodes because they contained characters i was categorically not interested in (in the end the only ones that kept my interest were sansa and margery(sp?))

idk it just didn't manage to make me care about any other people. brienne was interesting too but she was stuck with jaime who i could not any harder not care about. oh the poor child murderer is developing a consciousness, what a world.

Apropos of recent secrets, Miraculous Ladybug. I know I would have loved it as a kid, I still love a lot of new kids' shows despite being past the target age, and I love magical girls (and catboys heh). But this show was nothing but a clichefest with the most annoying main character I've seen in years.

Re: What series did you expect to love but ended up hating?

(Anonymous) 2017-06-04 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Out of curiosity, I found an episode on Youtube and yeah.. I liked the catboy, the main character was okay, but with the CGI I really just felt like I was watching a little kids show. If it had been anime, 2D art style I maybe could have enjoyed it a little more, but CGI just strikes me as really kiddy. idk. I probably would've liked it when I was young though.

Bones, forensic anthropologist solves crimes? Cool. Forensic anthropologist written inexplicably ignorant and stupid about basic principles within her own field to make relationship drama? Not so cool.

Fortysomething. I loooooooove me some Hugh Laurie but it wasn't funny and the fact that his wife on the show was constantly refusing to have sex with him made me think she must be the stupidest character in the history of TV.

Yeah I watched Fortysomething for Laurie and Capaldi but the writing was kind of meh.

Which is a shame because with those two and Cumberbatch they had talent in the actors.
