People don't necessarily frame it in these terms, but fluffiness seems to be one of the things that really sets off the Tumblr Fic Is The Worst Thing In The Universe brigade.

If you mean the people like me who hate the attitude that conflict is problematic and "how dare you make my gay small son go through troubles and trials" from the portrayal-is-condoning bullshit brigade, I'm under absolutely no illusion that the average tumblr fic would be better if my preferred angst happened to be as in vogue as all this other posturing because it wouldn't mean anybody would be writing anything in less than 20 sloppy minutes.

TL;DR I don't think fluff is the root of all badfic, but I still just think it's likely to be boring.

Same. I mean, I have no general issue with fluff, but in some fandoms it's totally taken over to the point that people will prevalently state or imply that fix-its and saccharine pancake-making fluff are "what fanfic is for," like they literally don't see the point of writing anything else, and that burns me up too much for me to really care that the OP feels like they can't broadcast their love of fluff, because, really? But I'd concede that's just from my experience.

I've seen complaints about fluff and angst (usually spelled with several more "a"s in about equal proportion.

But apparently Tumblr invented writing short one-shots that could be easily red on a phone in a few spare minutes, while pre-Tumblr it was all multi-chapter epicfics (as if the drabble didn't just predate Tumblr, it predates LJ, and in fact, the internet as a widespread mode of fannish communication https://fanlore.org/wiki/Drabble .)

I like fluff. I like it better if there is a little hint of something darker in the premise to keep it real and less saccharine than it might otherwise get.

Out of character fluff is mostly not awesome, but sometimes I still read it anyway.

Same. For me, I get easily burnt out on long, super dramatic, angsty and "realistic" fics so when I can find some drama-free fluff, it's like a breath of fresh air.

I like fluff a lot too. And I understand the kneejerk ugh at all the "Everything must be happy and unproblematic!" stuff, but at the same time a lot of fandom kids are.... well.. KIDS and they still think cheap angst is so deep and edgy and artistic. Give a fictional character eating disorders, self-harm, write about the other characters dying one by one and it's like catnip.

But I'd much rather stick to stuff that's fluffier. It doesn't mean it has to be conflict-free, just more optimistic.

I feel there's a difference between "I want everything to be happy!" and "Can we not have cheap angst?"

I fall in the camp of "Can I have a plot and consistent characterization? I mean, 2,000 words of character study or fluff are great, but come on, man, can I have 10K of actual story? 20K? 50K?"

I understand that it takes more effort to write and polish, I'm working on my second 50K fic this year and it takes time, but I am just so sick of finding a new fandom and there is virtually nothing but 2500 words of cheap angst sprinkled in <1000-word pieces of utter tripe.

Oh, good lord, your "eating disorder" comment reminds me of a fic I saw posted in my fandom involving a character I like sometime back. The summary indicated that said character would be struggling with an eating disorder...and also had a bit about how the readers would get to choose what happened next in the story in relation to all the stress/angst he was going through.

Just...what?

Hmm...I feel like most fic are just that. Fluff with no substance. It's not nearly as common for me to find a fic with a decent plot.
