I do that sometimes. Depends on what I'm playing it for. Some games are mechanics focused and playing them on easymode removes a lot of what's fun or unique about the game itself. Especially tactical or strategy games.

But RPGs like Dragon Age? Easy all the way, who cares. You're playing for the story. The combat systems are shit and uninteresting anyway and no amount of difficulty is going to make that fun.

If it is a story based game, I will play it on easy. I played The Last of Us recently on easy and that is the only way I was able to beat it. I am horrible at shooting.

I prefer RPGs that are story based, and so yeah, I play them on easy mode whenever it's an option. Sometimes I'll change classes/skills on replays, to try different things, but still on easy.

Same tbh.

I mostly play games for the story so I'll choose the easiest difficulty so I can play it without wanting to destroy the controller and the TV the whole time, I just don't find it any fun to be pissed off at a game 90% of the time. It's honestly not good for my blood pressure, lol.

(Granted I like to do some of the challenges in WoW but those are only occasional things, I don't do Mythic raiding and otherwise I'm running about mount-farming or collecting mog sets).

Yeah, more or less. I usually play on normal, but I understand what you're saying. Personally, I want to be entertained by a game and getting frustrated by having to start over and over again annoys instead of entertains me.
If that's different for other people, sure, go ahead, play on Nightmare all you want. But stop it with the superiority complex whenever doesn't enjoy that. I'm not calling them edgy posers for it either because however someone wants to enjoy their game is entirely up to them.

I've done that too for the sake of story, so don't feel too bad. I do try to go back to see if I can beat the game on a higher difficulty, though it doesn't always work out.

I've only just started with story video games (I started Dragon Age), and I totally understand where you are coming from. I am playing because I'm interested in the story. The combat doesn't interest me nearly as much, so even though I'm winning battles easily now, I can't imagine wanting to make it harder.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 01:09 am (UTC)(link)
I'll definitely play story-driven games on Normal or Easy. No shame in that.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 01:32 am (UTC)(link)
I'm playing Fallout for the first time, on easy. Hell, I even put it on god mode to explore the really dangerous areas. I get the most out of the game that way.

The only game I play on Hard Mode is Fallout and that's only because I've played 3, NV, and 4 for so many hours and gameplay between them all is almost the same.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 02:52 am (UTC)(link)
Same. I approach games the way some people approach popcorn flicks - I want to escape, not to be challenged,

[personal profile] cbrachyrhynchos 2017-07-05 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
Depends on the game for me, and where I find the sweet spot between "this is boring" and "this is needlessly frustrating." (Then there are the games with broken mechanics/encounters, like the endgame for Oblivion.)

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Yep. Games are for fun and if it's not fun any more what's the point of playing them, tbh? I get poked fun at because I play on normal but I don't care. At least I didn't have to spend a whole year trying to defeat the final boss because I was that Guy who Wanted to Play on the Hardest Setting.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 03:43 am (UTC)(link)
Same! And anyone who want to give me shit over it - well, I kind of don't give a fuck? At all? They're completely irrelevant?

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 04:16 am (UTC)(link)
The background image makes me so angry. Some people aren't good at games but still want to play!!

You're not a noob at all, OP.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 05:39 am (UTC)(link)
SAME

I might go back and replay a game on a harder mode, once I already know the story, if I feel like having a challenge, but when what I really care about is the story and characters, like... why torture myself?

I remember back in the day when FE didn't have a casual mode, and it was frustrating as hell. On a second playthrough, when I have some idea of the strategy from my low-stress play, it's all cool, but like... that first time, I don't want to stress over a character I love dying forever.

My rule of thumb is that if I die three times on the same battle despite changing tactics and adjusting my style of play, then I switch the combat to easy and never look back. The repetition isn't fun, it's frustrating, and life is too short.

Fuck that difficulty screen x99999, tho, saw that on reddit as an example of ~good mechanics~ and nearly spit acid for the rest of the day.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 06:36 am (UTC)(link)
I'll play harder sometimes, but it's only after I've played the game at least once on one of the easier difficulties. I only go harder if I replay, and I usually don't finish harder playthroughs. I have better things to do than be frustrated over a video game.

[personal profile] digitalghosts 2017-07-05 06:58 am (UTC)(link)
I usually play on normal but some missions frustrated the hell out of me that I turned on easy ... and it has not made all better (Saints Row 4 and tower climbing missions! Oh yes, it is even with jump, glide and speed maxed...). However, yeah, I also lowered level in Fallout games as well at certain points. You can always use cheats and mods as well if you do not want to decrease overall level.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 07:35 am (UTC)(link)
I usually play on normal so it's neither too boring nor too grueling for me. If you're only into a game for the story and hate any kind of challenge, then why not save your money and watch a youtube playthrough instead? People have pretty much uploaded every possible path for every game out there. Though if you're so bad at games that even the easiest mode is a challenge, then that's a different story. So long as there's at least some challenge then it's still a game.

Not that I really care what people do. I just don't understand spending money on a game you don't actually want to play when you could watch someone else do it for free.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-05 11:54 am (UTC)(link)
Don't some story games have different stories depending on your actions though? Plus there is a big difference between getting to unlock the story yourself vs. watching someone else do it. It just really varies how much work you want to do to unlock the story.

Good luck finding actual quality playthroughs without annoying lulzrandom commentary.

The first time I played Knights of the Old Republic (my first video game since, uh, Mario?) I had to have my brother give me all the cheats. I can now play it on difficult in any class and any build. :p

I still play most games on easy to start with. I want the combat to be challenging but not overly frustrating. I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but I also don't think there's anything wrong with a game being designed to be hard, either. No one is being oppressed because a video game is too hard. Too hard? Don't play. It has an easy mode? Go for it.

(Anonymous) 2017-07-06 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, I love playing some games on hard mode and outrageously using cheats if they're available.
