BROAD GENERALIZATION IS BROAD.

Funny you can only fling shit anonymously...

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 01:43 am (UTC)(link)

also anon is the only way to prevent your legions of buttsex-loving queer bitches coming after us with your own razorblades and dildos

Re: 158

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
LOL, far from that, anon. I'm just amused at your way of "thinking" more than anything.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sure it’s a generalization, but if that’s all you come across, it’s hard to convince yourself to search through all the rubbish for something that MIGHT be there. (In this case: a nice fic.)

Re: 158

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
It's a fucking law in media period that most shit is extremely mediocre, some shitty and few good ones and very rare excellent ones. BL is not exempt from this any more than het, yuri, gen, friendship fics (because I read plenty of mediocre to epicly shitty shit from those as well). It doesn't help if you don't like it (which leads me if you never actually geninue look for the good stuff) so it will skewered your viewpoint, if you never notice or not.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
(lol, delayed comment...) No, it's not that I don't like it. In fact, I AM a BL fan even if not exclusively or all that hardcore. It's because of that that I say this, that most fics are crap. I know from experience. I agree with you it isn't isolated to just slash, but I don't dabble in everything (meaning non BL and het) enough to get an accurate idea of all the different types of fic you'll get.

I just know that in BL, more often than not the fics are just an excuse to get their two (or more) favorite guys together for mindless sex, regardless of whether or not the pairing is canonically justifiable. I find that more irritating than poorly written friendship fics.

Re: 158

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree because most slash fics aren't even smut first of all. Seeing a few at a couple of places doesn't mean you can make a conclusive judgement of it. I guess because I a kind of a hardcore het/slash/yuri fan, who knows.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Unfortunately, it isn't just a few. But even if they all aren't outright smut fics, the pairings still lack any sort of believable foundation (most of the time).

But. Okay. To sum this argument up: all fanfic is pointless and most of it sucks anyways. In which case, it is a waste of time to read it. That doesn't really do us any good, then, does it?

Re: 158

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 03:22 am (UTC)(link)
Although I think what makes a certain pairing believable differ with each people. There some pairings I can't see plausible, no matter how hard the fanfiction tries to make it so. And a good number of those fics only cater to people who like the pairing anyway, so they're writing assuming that.

But like I said earlier, I agree with the ratio of fanfiction. A majority of fanfiction is blah to shit, like any valid media. Nothing more, nothing less. Watching TV, reading books, playing video games are time wasters too, why prioritize that over fanfiction? It's all the same to me in that regard.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
I don't disagree with you on the good to bad ratio of fics. But I pick on fanfiction simply because it's an extension of something the fanfic writers didn't create themselves. Obviously, I will look into the fandom of things that I already like (be it a movie, a TV show, a book, etc) - therefore, I have certain expectations when it comes to the quality of fandom related things.

If people aren't producing anything better than the original, I feel it is a waste of time. Compare this to when you read a new book out on the shelves - you have no comparisons, there's nothing to base the quality of that book except your other favorite books. But even then, they aren't the same characters. With fanfic, there's only so much butchering of characters I can take.

Wow, this is such a ranty argument, but I hope it at least makes sense because I'm getting tired of typing it, lol.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 01:52 am (UTC)(link)
(not the above anon)

I don't get why sex and romance seems to be the large focus of Fandom--it reduces everything into sexual salt and pepper shakers. And the slashers I have met (which is many ;;>.>), made me twitch, as they were total airheads. Or they made a big deal about every little thing that points to their pairing (ugh...hate that term...characters are nothing but socks), to the point I wanted to issue em a tinfoil hat.

Re: 158

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
I met just as many (if not more) het fans who you describe as above. Hell, I hear about het shipwars WAY often than BL ones (and F!S reflect this as well). It has to do way more with one's maturity level than anything.

And there is NOTHING wrong with romance and sex, nor it 'cheapens' anything. It's a natural human thing. Hell, even through the age romantic love is usually hearlded STRONGER than friendship love. And friendship can have just as co-dependency, roles, and powerplay as a romantic relationship. And it can reduce to "salt and pepper shakers" as well. I understand you want more gen and friendship fics and shit like that, go and make them, you don't have to attack romantic or sexual love to make a damn point.

Re: 158

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hell, even through the age romantic love is usually hearlded STRONGER than friendship love. <---um, no

So everything comes down to romance? Most people complain when romance or sex becomes the focus of a series--that's the moment when people drop it and complain that it's a shadow of its former self and "cheap." Eating food is a natural thing too, so is going to the bathroom. ;;>.> Platonic love or respectful spiritual relations--much more difficult for Fandom to grasp--they just want lots of sex and make out parties between characters. After awhile, that just gets old.

Oooo, touchy. Real Life != Fiction
In Fiction....Ridiculous amounts of sex and romance is a writing device that cheapens and flattens characters.

I agree 100%

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 02:30 am (UTC)(link)
also lmao I love how all these idiots try to argue that "OMG FANDOM =/= REAL LIFE" yet they love pulling out real-life examples.

hypocrites much?

Re: I agree 100%

[identity profile] etherealtsuki.livejournal.com 2008-06-17 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think they meant in what they enjoy in fandom doesn't necessarily mean they like it in real life more than anything. Like liking shota doesn't mean you're a pedo. However, to write a convincing fic, you do project your own worldview and the like unconsciously or not because they're usually your projection of how you perceive the characters to be.

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 02:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Like liking shota doesn't mean you're a pedo.

yes it does. deep down, someone has those secret desires because obviously they like it. and you can't tell me that most of the time they get hot from it.

therefore, yeah, i'd be willing to bet that they secretly DO like it, but can't tell people out loud because it's socially unacceptable. in the meantime they'll get their jollies via fanfic.

lmao, SICK FUCKS. why can't they just die? the world would be a much better place without all these pedophiles and other undesirables wandering about.

(Anonymous) 2008-06-17 02:45 pm (UTC)(link)

Hell, even through the age romantic love is usually hearlded STRONGER than friendship love. <---um, no

Uh, yes. Study history and philosophy.

And uh, no. And not most people would drop a series because of a romance itself but how it written more often than not and how they handle it (and frustration of the romance usually taking the safe route). For example, I liked Fruits Basket, I didn't mind of the canon romances in the beginning such as Hatori/his ex-fiancee's best friend, Kureno/Arisa, Hiro/Risa, in fact I liked them. However, the author wrecked the main love triangle by using the stupidest move ever in a shoujo, one of the suitor loved the main character as a MOTHER when the enitre series made it very, very clear he didn't feel that way. Plus, people get tired when the First Girl/Guy wins trope gets abused to high hell.

To be honest, I think a majority amount of gen fics tend to be flat to me because they never quite live up to the canon. And they're not exempt from OOC neither. Plus it feels that I already get most of my gen fascination from the canon and it feels like it. It like getting second helpings of most of the time. Like a good slash fic, it's hard to find a gen fic that shines.

And I think you have quite dissonance of how much smut there actually is. Fics that range from G-PG13 greatly outnumbers R and NC-17 fics. I know this from years of being on the fringe of fandom. Even if you go to fanfiction.net and filter out all the R and NC-17 fics, you're only gonna notice maybe 10%-15% of fics go missing. I'm pretty damn sure in LJ, that ratio is more/less the same, percentage a bit higher or lower depending on the fandom.

They don't want all sex parties and stuff, stop over-exaggerating. Most shippers ship for the romance, sex is usually a perk than anything and some *sigh* don't like the sex equation come in some of their pairings! And it's not the romance and sex that degrades a character, it's people not writing it in character (sometimes this can be pretty diffcult if the character has never shown to fall in like/love before) whether it's romance, friendship or gen.

Plus, a huge percentage of fandom is in an age that romance is running on the brain.

Sorry. XD But go study "blah blah blah" just to prove your point--made me roll my eyes. In reality, there is really no such thing as romantic love. Romantic love is an idealist vision of what people think it should be like. And it never is--and never lasts that way.

Anyways.

Most all of Fan-Fiction is OOC, cause it is not by the canon creator. They just have to speculate and talk for hours about who they want with who....it's like listening in on High School gossip, Rag Mag gossip. It's really no different, in my opinion. It's like Harlequin Romance novels, and with slash, just more with dicks and nudity.

Re: 158

Although science can disapprove that? Look up fMRI imaging and love. Granted it's still a fresh study. Of course love changes, that's why it's not easy either. I'm known people who fell out of love with a drop of a hat, I known people who were married and in love for decades upon decades and I known people who loved each other until one of them died and the other still hung up on the other, years later. Love, whether friendship or romantic, is fickle.

With that thinking of yours, friendship doesn't exist since it's just equal bartering, whether the payoff is emotional or physical. And that familiar bonds are just a group of people who live in close quarters, blood-related or not, that adhere to roles for the harmony of the house.

No, what makes OOC is that it went against what the character is confirmation in canon, not because it's not made by the creator, that's fanon. Besides, a good amount of the time, the character is like an unfinished puzzle board, we might have a good look of what the whole picture is, but there's a lot of missing pieces.

LOL, like school gossip and rag mags? You have quite an imagination. Then gen fics and all that jazz is the same, even analyzing a show is no different either!
