138. I sympathise. In my case, it's not that I'm automatically against the idea of the Doctor canonically falling in love - though I don't particularly care for it - it's that I can't see why River. She just didn't seem well-developed enough. I'm open to seeing her again and being converted, but as it is? She just didn't impress me the way someone so important to the Doctor should.

I don't think they picked a particularly likeable actress for a start. I'm pretty sure that most people would have an issue with it no matter who acted the part, but the plot may have been easier to swallow with somebody else behind the character.

138. Yeah, that was a weird episode. And I believed in The Girl in the Fireplace. I think the writing for that episode was a bit “Tell, not Show,” which led to me finding her smug rather than confident, and off-putting rather than intriguing.

I think that's assuming way too much and reading too much into it. Making a dark retelling of something isn't going "THE ORIGINAL STORY WAS OBVIOUSLY SECRETLY DARK~" It's looking at it from a different angle and updating it. Romeo & Juliet wasn't rly about gangfighting in Manhattan, but West Side Story is a perfectly good story in and of itself. The Alice game is just a reimagining using psychosis as the turning point instead of just simple imagination and dreams.

150 - word, also. If it's canon then the reason WHY they like their love interest is a part of their character. Which isn't like OMG DON'T SHIP ANYTHING ELSE EVER!±1 because nothing is set in stone, but it's certainly a part of WHO that character is. Unless it's Marvel and then it depends on who is writing that day I MEAN.

I disagree with your take on this, though--I think you're taking the secret as a little less extreme than it is, and the key word is 'shipping.'

Shipping something and accepting that it's a part of a character's past are two VASTLY different things. If I RP John Sheppard with Rodney McKay in an RP, I don't necessarily have to SHIP Nancy/John (his ex-wife) to write John in character. I just need to recognize that part of him was shaped by a failed marriage, and remember that should I come across parts of the story that might have a character react differently should they know what a failed marriage feels like.

Likewise if I were to write a Catherine/Grissom story (which I NEVER WOULD but still)--Grissom canonically loves Sara. Writing that he never cared for her would--YES, EXACTLY--be OOC. But, I don't have to ship Grissom/Sara to RP either Catherine or Grissom--in fact, it would probably make the game really fucking difficult to play if I did.

146. I always wanted to write a novel or something just so that I could have a fandom, haha. And then I'd pull a Murakami and write really fucked up smut of my own characters. The original novel would probably be G to PG-rated, lol.

150. So crack AU ships like Sephiroth/Ranmaru, Edgeworth/Tsuzuki, Guy/Tenten, or Karel/Leanne would weird you out, huh? I honestly don't get this whole "canon or nothing" mindset. Especially when characters are separated from their "canon" pairing in AU setting, etc. What are you going to do if nobody wanted to play the Lloyd to your Colette? Just nix the idea of ever pairing the character up, even if the plotline eventually led to an IC relationship? "Sorry, but even if our characters are becoming attracted to each other due to relationships within the game, I won't pair them up with anyone but their 'canon' love interest."
