I'm not even getting interviews. Been thinking of cutting my degree out. I don't care much either at this point. I applied for a baking job at the local Perkins because at least I know I am okay at baking.

Honestly that might be a good idea, especially because it sounds like it doesn't quite have anything to do with what you're aiming to do.

I end up taking my address out so at least I can get people on the phone before they go "Oh we don't give a fuck about actually relocating and training someone".

I should do that! My sister lives in a much larger city (Tulsa) and I might be able to get a job there and live with her while I find an apartment. The only think that is keeping me out of Tulsa is how awful the traffic is. :/

I don't know the specifics of your situation but I do think that moving to a larger place is generally going to make it *much* easier to find a job. So I think that's definitely something to strongly consider.

I've heard of people getting a PO box, or using a friend's address, as their address on an application if they don't live in the city the job is in.

I do that! I use my relative's address in an Atlanta suburb...no dice yet.

Wouldn't cut your degree out; it looks good to have one (even for "basic" jobs these days).

How is your resume structured?

I'm guessing you're okay with it since you linked the resume, but I'm still gonna ask before I do it: are you comfortable with constructive feedback?

Re: It's November 1st

[personal profile] a_potato 2017-11-02 02:21 am (UTC)(link)
Okay! So, there's a lot of great stuff in there, but the big issue I see with it is that it isn't targeted toward a specific position. You have a lot of skills that can apply to a lot of different jobs, but if I were a hiring manager, my perception would be that there isn't a clear focus on the position that I'm trying to fill. Also, your work experience bullet points don't explicitly tie back to your qualifications.

Under what circumstances have you used Microsoft Office? What accomplishments of yours highlight your problem-solving and communication skills? What are some specific things you've done that demonstrate you can handle a fast pace? Maintaining a safe and clean work environment is great, but that doesn't tell me much about how you'll react to an administrative crisis; better to say that you're organized and can multi-task. Take those keywords from your Highlights section and find ways to weave them into your Experience. Also, since you've had a supervisory role, expound upon it and toss it into the Highlights, because that's big.

Beyond that, as much of a pain in the ass as it can be, tailor your resume to each position you apply for. Look at the things that they want, figure out how each of your jobs applies and how you can incorporate a keyword from the job description, and adjust accordingly. You want your experience bullet points to all fit into a single theme, if that makes sense.

Thanks for the advice. I've not been tailoring my resumes but I have been tailoring my cover letters. What is your opinion on resumes being more than one page?

Re: It's November 1st

[personal profile] a_potato 2017-11-02 03:00 am (UTC)(link)
These days, longer than one page is risky, because it's very unlikely someone will read to the second page. All of the pertinent info needs to be on the first page. On the plus side, there's a certain extent to which you can get away with playing around with text size and font.

But yeah, tailoring to the job is big, particularly since a lot of companies use bots to filter resumes. At a minimum, you've got to lift bits from the job description and splice them in.

I know this isn't your job, but I redid most of my resume. If you have time, could you give it another look? If not, that is perfectly fine!

Re: It's November 1st

Oh wow, that's a lot stronger! It's much better at highlighting your achievements and what you're good at, particularly in the Warehouse Department Supervisor section.

My suggestion would be to go even further with it, and insert that style into every section (e.g. "leveraged multi-tasking ability to tackle a multi-line phone system. Assisted callers and exercised communication skills to involve appropriate departments"). If you can figure out a way to start every bullet point with a skill, and then link it to a task (as well as use all the HR buzzwords), you're golden.

Thanks! Yeah, I tried using as many buzzwords as I could find. I will continue to work on it.

I really, really appreciate the help.

ia with everything a_potato said, especially about tailoring it to the position you're applying for. (Also, I definitely wouldn't suggest cutting out your degree. Your education might not be relevant but having a degree suggests some level of baseline-competence.)

So, if I was looking over this... My first thought is that your Highlights don't tell me a lot about YOU, they tell me that you're literate and can copy+paste generic resume buzzwords. That's not a great start because now I'm going to be looking at the rest more critically for evidence that you live up to your self-hype. (It's also not a bad start because at least you didn't misspell your own name or hand me a resume targeted towards a totally different company.)

So, moving on to your Experience... you're listing off tasks you did. But this is not targeted, and I feel like you kind of missed the point. As an employer, I don't really care that you monitored inmates or followed OSHA regulations or whatever. For me, I'm going to read this list and ask, "what relevance does this have to the job I'm hiring you to do?" and also "Does this list provide evidence for your highlights section."

You need to really play up the supervisor angle, for one thing. "Effective supervision of employee performance including training and support" should be at the TOP of the list. Being responsible enough to supervise other people is a big plus for any job (and supports your "communication skills" highlight), but instead of showcasing that you've put it lower than "I listed things on, like, Amazon and stuff".

But basically you need to do that for all your highlights. Reword your highlights and your experience so that they work together to show that you really do live up to the hype. Show me in your experience section that you actually are a motivated self starter. Right now, nothing you've listed supports that. You say you're analytical, at some point in your experience I expect to see that you analyzed something. If you're good at working in fast-paced environments, give me more details. Paint a picture of the frantic life of a dispatcher in your bullet points. Tell me you simultaneously took calls and processed police reports. Whatever.

But really for me the sticking point is that it's not targeted. You're making me do the work of picking through your resume for the relevant bits.

So should I try to use a 'functional' resume as opposed to a chronological one? Like this? https://resumegenius.com/resume-formats/functional-samples-writing-guide That seems like it would be useful to me because I want to change careers and have some employment gaps.

Seems like resumes rely more on creative writing skills than technical. And I am horrible at creative writing.

Also, thank you so much for the tips!

idk, I think both are 'functional' and chronological are fine. It's just you have to figure out how to showcase your most important/noteworthy skills effectively.

Writing a functional resume might help you out anyway, even if you don't use it, since it would force you to really take a hard look at your relevant skills.

Resumes are really a pain in the ass. You're welcome!
