What do these men have in common? They're old and fat.
All this Hollywood MeToo stuff is still completely self-serving. Younger and hotter men who harass women (and men and even children) will get a pass.
Hollywood should be burned to the ground. I don't believe more than a handful of successful men haven't ever harassed anyone in their entire careers.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 09:14 am (UTC)(link)I don't think I've ever met a man who didn't act grossly towards me or a female friend at least once. Even if they were apologetic or never did it again, those incidents still happened.
The chances of there being anything more than the rare gem of a man who has never crossed that line seem pretty slim to me. Especially in Hollywood where there are powerful men holding the strings and then mostly beautiful men and women who have to dance to their tune.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)Younger and attractive men with power harass and abuse, but movements against their actions can't get any traction.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 12:11 am (UTC)(link)Who is the MeToo stuff serving, if it's "self serving?" The younger, hotter men? Women who you assume are okay with being harassed by young hot guys but, get mad when someone old and ugly does it?
Why should Hollywood be "burned to the ground" because ONLY a few people are harassers? Do you mean that you'd have a better opinion of it if it was full of harassers?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 12:14 am (UTC)(link)I am curious as to whether your problem with Hollywood is because of all the harassers, or because of the people who supposedly only call out the ugly ones?

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 12:12 am (UTC)(link)One, there are very clearly a *bunch* of different and extremely complicated factors at work in terms of who gets heat for this, and who has not gotten heat for it so far. It's really hard to pin down all the dynamics at work here, not least because how people think about it seems to have changed and to be changing continually right underneath our eyes. Like, pretty clearly, the standards that we as a society have right now are materially different from the standards that we had 5 years ago. And I think that change is generally for the better, but it's still a real change. And there are all kinds of other assumptions about age, and power, and what kind of reports we believe, and all sorts of things. But to reduce all of that to "hotness" is, honestly, both wrong and pretty fucked up.
Second, with regard to burning Hollywood to the ground - I do agree that this stuff is endemic in Hollywood. But I don't know that it's *more* endemic than any other structure in American life. The reality is that this is endemic in society, and picking out Hollywood as the sphere that needs to be burned down doesn't make sense to me.

I think people are afraid to come forward about more conventionally attractive abusers because as well as the usual victim-blaming they have to put up with, there'll also be comments about how they should have enjoyed it, they're lucky, etc. That's certainly been my experience when complaining about sexual harassment from physically attractive men.

(Anonymous) 2017-11-11 01:06 am (UTC)(link)Additionally, I think what the media chooses to latch onto and how they cover the story can have a big impact on what people get upset about. The more famous the celebrity involved in the scandal, the more interest the story is likely to generate, so the media will emphasize the accusations leveled at more famous people... and among men in entertainment and journalism it is often older men who are the more famous.
I was only vaguely aware of Harvey Weinstein's existence before this, but I can't help but be aware of him now. Also, I knew who Kevin Spacey was but had never heard of the Gossip Girl guy, so the Spacey story catches my attention more not because the Gossip Girl guy might be young and hot (I don't know?) but because I know who Kevin Spacey is.

I'm also very surprised that people took 'burn hollywood to the ground literally. Dismantle the shit power systems that allowed these men to prosper. It should happen in industries worldwide.
Also people seem to have taken your last statement to be 'oh EVERY man is a rapist' instead of 'there's way, way more'

I know there's no cut-off age for being a rapist, but a lot of the young *men* in Hollywood were harassed and assaulted, too, so....

But I don't know if I'm sold that it is the majority of men in hollywood. Probab;y still a vast minority, but a minority that is much more diverse than it's being shown as.

Case in point: where are all the women? I think it's got to be known that women in positions of power are doing this shit too. I mean, I think we all know about the Christian Bale / Mary Harron thing from the filming of American Psycho, but even tho it's no secret that shit won't wind up being listed on #MeToo any time soon. It's not just the men taking advantage, butI sure as hell wouldn't be a guy with a career coming along and trying to pull the #metoo card on a female abuser.
